Re: BMW 1er Coupé/Convertible Picture Thread
Got some close-up pics of the wood(s). I can understand how some are turned off by the internet pictures. IMO, this is down to two main factors:
1.) Excessive clear coat (pretty common practice in sub-Rolls/Bentley level of luxury)
2.) Haziness/milkiness. This is less prevalent in real-life than in pictures, and depends on the viewing angle relative to the sun, but it is still there. Contrary to my expectation, with the sun almost directly behind you, the haziness seems amplified, while looking more "into the sun," the grain of the wood seems to jump out more. And it seems to vary by specific examples. The 1er and a 2007 E90 I sat in with the walnut trim seemed hazier than poplar. Anyway, here are the pics in the 1er.
Light Burl Walnut in a convertible.
Gray Poplar in a black coupe. A couple of weeks ago, I would've thought wood trim in a black car was a lackluster combo, but these two go together quite well.
For comparison, here's the fake wood in a Chrysler Pacifica I rented a couple of years ago. Looks pretty good so long as you are not too close.
Get close enough and you see the "dot-matrix"-like pattern of the print.
Against the 1-Series trim, there is no depth, no variation of gold "flame"-effect highlights in the grain regardless of viewing angle. Because there is no grain.
Apparently, BMW uses the same supplier of wood trim for the 1er as they do the rest of their lineup: Draexlmaier. They supply to Mercedes/Maybach, Audi, Jaguar, and Bugatti. Varying levels of quality, of course.
Other pics of the 1-Series. I think this is the $400 USB/iPod adapter. Not sure how other cars do it, but this seems ridiculously expensive. Standard car has only the AUX input, which I think would be good enough for me.
Thanks, BMW of Mountain View.
