Vs Autobild: Audi A8 vs Mercedes-Benz S-Class

It was the standard A8 interior compared to the standard interiors of the 7 and the S. It wasn't a Quattro Gmbh special order interior anything like that. Design yes, stunning.....all over the S and 7 IMO. Yes I've been in a 7 and S many, many times now. I'm talking about all standard cars here. M

So, you're talking about design? Design is class-leading? Or the fit&finish? Materials? Perceived quality?

Since some things like design (layout), styling (trim used), perceived quality, are subjective / taste-dependent, while others can be "measured" objectively (fit&finish, materials used, ergonomics).

:usa7uh:

None of them are any favorites but S-class looks the best here. A8 only takes the winning in Interior category.

The S class is looking absolutely superb. It is timeless, such an elegant design. And the A8 is just a boring slab of metal when compared to it.

Like many others have said, A8 exterior looks like crap next to S. But the interior makes the S class interior look a generation old, which I guess it is.

Damn, that FL did the S-class all kinds of good. It still looks as fresh as it did when it debuted. The A8 is a nice car, but it still doesn't stand a chance against the S-class.

I've yet to really get/be turned on by the exterior of the S-Klasse. I saw a brand-new S yesterday and thought that the new optics looked like they "christmas tree'd" the thing. It feels brash, American and and somewhat witless. The fact that it's conceptually hitched to the Maybach doesn't help things either.

I was sorely disappointed that Audi didn't bring the A8 to Los Angeles, so I've yet to see this thing in person. I'm still holding out hope that IRL impressions will exceed what we've seen in pictures. Interior-wise there's little reason to believe that the A8 isn't resetting the bar for this class.

Are you in anyway implying Americans are "christmas tree'd, brash & somewhat witless". :D;)

Just checking ... Trying to clear out your words since someone can accuse you of insulting American people. It can happen quite quickly here ... I would know, believe me.

I read this comparission in the spanish Autobild yesterday. They say that even when the new A8 is lighter and full of new tech, their engines are not as powerful as the Mercedes one, (they compare the S500 with the A8 4.2 FSI) wich is tstill the class leader, and the reference on its segment.

In my opinion, the new A8 looks too A4-ish, the rear part is just the same as the A4 one, and the front LEDs are nothing but ugly. The interior on the other hand is very well designed (two years ago I was told this by a member of this forum, and I see he was right), and rises the bar over the S-Class and the 7 Series. The S-Class interior was never the nicest part of the car, as the design iss just meh, and I really thought the F01 was going to be the interior design reference on this gen, but the fact that another three BMW cars have the same layout makes it lest prestigious.

The LCI of the W221 has done wonders for the car, the rear is just perfect now with the AMG pack, and it will be an even more rounded car with the 2010 new engines (the new V8 should smoke away this 4.2 FSI), so S-Class aaaall the way.

I don't think those photographs do the A8 justice. With Audi's its always the small details such as colours, rim, and trim what make a big difference. In black or blue with multi-spoke rims this car might be quite a looker.

Styling wise the S-class wins. A8 interior a delight, though it lacks the 'depth' of the S-class's richness in the interior...:usa7uh:

Now then, hope there are comparo pics of the 7er against the A8 soon - let battle commence!:t-cheers:

whats about to integrate a poll in this thread ???

Yep, I also think, that there is no need for a poll!! It's great to have a luxury sedan thread without a poll again! In my opinion a poll always destroys the discussions a bit and make the whole thread more nonserious! :usa7uh: And there are so many good posts here, that we don't really need one!

edit: For those who want a poll, please visit this thread:

The S simply kills it in terms of of exterior design...:eusa_clap

Interior is a different story, though, but above pic says all - th S is a clear winner.

Audi, Audi...:jpshakehe

the feel of the interior of the a8 must be really great, a friend of mine who works at audi told me this. also look at the stunning seats of the audi, fantastic!!! but if i compare the exterior of those two cars, the s-class, especially with this facelift is still the number one. and a technical comparison is not so fair cause,...how old is the w/v221? :-) let's wait and see how good the new v8 engine will handle the job.

I respect Audi's, and their evolutionary approach, but this new gen of designs just seems like a step back from the old, not more dynamic, not really sleeker, not much more rounded, nor angular, I just can't really put my finger on it. I know that no doubt I feel the old A4 has a more specific look to it than the new A4 does, as the new one leaves absolutely no impression on me, as the old gen did.

Gotta say, via these pics, the S's exterior is no doubt the champion IMO. Interior wise, although I think the W221's materials are superp, and I do think the cleanliness and simplicity over the Audi's gives it a more mature and classier look, I never really liked it's sparse design all so much, and the Audi's looks, albeit a bit too busy and fussy, with some plastic here and there it seems, still more "expensive", and all around, more luxurious, and sporty than the S's.

Some of those pics (like the rear one), and elements, gives it a straight up Bentley-esque level of look.

Couldn't get a proper translation using the online translators for this quote:
