SL-Class 2017 Mercedes-Benz SL-Class Facelift

The Mercedes-Benz SL-Class (marketed as Mercedes-AMG SL since 2022) is a grand touring sports car manufactured by Mercedes-Benz since 1954. The designation "SL" derives from the German term "Sport-Leicht", which translates to "Sport Light" in English.

I like the facelift very much.

The SL 450 in this video looks great.

I still can't believe a car of that value has such an outdated interior . A c class saloon which is a 30k car ha a better interior

Its style is only outdated relative to the newer MB models which have just leapfrogged their stablemates and the competition in terms of stylistic flair. Relative to competitors it's just fine. And the quality and finish is still superb.

I have a 2015 SL550 and a family member has a C450. Neither me or that family member would agree that the C interior is even close to as nice as the SL interior.

I would say the C's interior design is newer, fresher, more modern, but the quality of the SL is still superior. Everything is thicker and more leather wrapped in the SL.

Exactly. You have to get past the stylistic flair and compare the quality.

That said the S-coupe interior does leave the SL for dead as it embodies both the top style and quality.

It's definitely chronologically newer (the interior of the C - with iPad - was designed ~6 years ago, where as the SL interior was designed ~10 years ago).

In terms of quality, it can't be emphasized enough how big the difference is.

As to it being more "modern", the C is definitely MB circa 2015 and therefore "fresh". But I have no doubt which will objectively look better looking back in 2027.

Hmm you guys are right. I never said the quality was superior in a C, I just preferred the newer, fresher design.

I'm just not really fond of the screen size or the plastic radio control system, after seeing an S class coupe interior I just thought a car in that price range should have been face lifted to incorporate some of those beautiful flowing ideas.

^^ SLC/SL are low volume sellers. It doesn't make any sense to spend ridiculous amount of money on doing a huge facelift to the interior, considering the next generation of cars are just 4 years way. There is already a next gen SL prototype undergoing testing on S class coupe body shell.

The thing is, anything you see coming out now was designed and "pencils down" 5 years ago, so when the new C was designed, it was 2010-11 and Apple had just come out with the iPad. So MB presumably thought it would be genius to include an "iPad" as the screen in 2010-11 when the iPad was "hot". Thankfully the cars that were designed right after (S, E in maybe 2012) began to have the screen drawn in close to the console, so they look more integrated and less like an iPad, even though they are still technically "external".

Correct, but to be clear that has always been the policy. The mid-cycle facelift is just that - a superficial update to the bodywork, and minor interior changes and mechanical improvements. The 2017 SL is still an R231, and the SLC is still an R172.

You have a very good point with this and I think you are right. Mercedes must have decided to use this screen format as the IPad was the hot item at the time of the cars design execution. This IPad look format first came out in mid 2011 in the B-class although that cars screen looks more of an afterthought than the C-class screen.

Maybe the SL/SLK and SLS interior could have been designed before the B-class and they decided to keep a common look between the 3 sportcars. The SLS debuted in 2010, SLK also 2011 and SL in 2012.

These are design sketches for B-class:
