Whats your favourite engine sound?

Best engines sounds for me is:

Definitely V12 sounds - and definitely naturally aspirated engines.

Here is examples.

-Pagani Zonda R
-Pagani Zonda Cinque
-Pagani Zonda 760 RS
-Pagani Zonda F Clubsport

-Ferrari FXX Evoluzione
-Ferrari Enzo
-Ferrari 599 GTO
-Ferrari F12 Berniletta

-Lambo Murcielago LP-670 Super Veloce
-Lambo Aventador

-Mclaren F1

And then comes to V10, V8 - etc and turbos.

LFA is definitely one of the best sounding machines. Cars aside...And I'm sorry, but I have to go off topic. That girl is a freaking hot.

Good that you made that distinction. People like to club all the sounds coming from a car together. I am probably in the minority in preferring the sound emanating from the instake side of things vs exhaust - it is like singing vs farting :D. It is the reason why I am not a big fan of loud exhausts - yes they can sound good, but they just end up drowning the intake and the engine itself. Also the fact that exhaust can be easily tuned to sound good makes it less authentic in my book.

And one of the cars with the best intake noise - M3 CSL, just listen to it in the OP. Goosebumps!

LOL, I like the V12 and V10 farts :p
There is also the transmission whine to add to the equation, but that's another history.
I love 6 in line engines. In fact, I could say they're the best sounding engines overall, because even "regular", low power 6 inline sound good; and to my taste the Lambo/Audi and Viper V10 aren't particualry exciting.... I miss so much the days when Merc used to make 6 inline's :cry:

M3 CSL does have a deep intake noise, but it really is a cold air intake on a slightly more tuned S54 engine. It is because the engine sounds very good already and the airbox amplifies it. However, the raspiness of the exhaust for S54 has always been contentious, but the great engine sound makes it a non-issue.

AP1 F20 Honda S2000s is another car that very well known for a very deep stock intake noise.

What I mean is, you can never make up for a bad sounding engine through magical exhaust tuning. Yes, it will probably improve the sound, but it will never sound very good or great.

A car sounds great because of the engine tuning characteristics and not inspite of it, in my opinion.

We were talking about the LFA and it sounds like it does only because of the engine, you can see this video where you can hear LFA's intake noise from over 1.5 km on Dottinger Hohe at Nurburgring coming towards the camera. The exhaust is only heard when the car is pulling away from the camera

The S2000 sounds very good, indeed. Those 90's VTEC Hondas were the best sound per buck ever.

Like I said before, the Carrera GT has a higher pitch (and a "clearer" note overall) but the LFA sounds better most of the time. Is like the Carrera GT sounds good most of the time, and incredible a the last 1000 rpm. The Zonda doesn't sound as high, but sounds more menacing at the low rpm register, but then again, we're talking about a 7.3 liter monster.

Lamborghini, Ferrari? They have wetdreams wanting to sound as good as the LFA-Zonda-Carrera GT triunvirate. :p

I have always seen with the stock exhaust tuning, the Carrera GT has a very "thin" exhaust voice, which gives it an illusion of higher pitched sound. However, I personally think as far only pitch is concerned, LFA engine induction actually seems a lot higher pitched sound (albeit a lot more denser and textured than that of the CGT) and it could very well be due to LFA's 9500 rpm rev band versus 8600 - 8700 rpm rev band for the Carrera GT.

If you look at these in-cabin videos side by side, from a pitch stand point, it looks like LFA is probably the highest pitched out of the three inside the cabin

The Granturismo MC does it for me. It strikes the perfect balance between the high pitch scream of an F1 V10 and a turbocharged V8. It simply sounds sexy without intimidating people on the pavement.

Well, that "thin" sound is what I was trying to explain before but didn't find the words :P
Not that I've a golden ear, but if you ask me, the CGT sounds higher at the limit. Still, higher doesn't mean that automatically is better; I like the wider range of the LFA and Zonda.

Between those videos you posted, the LFA deffinetively has a higher audible pitch, but on the one Pruett's driving, it doesn't sound as high.
Is also a bit difficult to compare in cabin sounds from front engine and mid engine cars, not only b/c of engine placement, but for the extra lenght of the pipes.

I voted AMG V12....Pagani plays THE tune perfectly, no doubt;)
 
I have no real favorite engine sound, but if to pick one it would be LFA, but it is not just any V10, it is a 72° V10.

I however have a favorite engine sound for every engine configuration.

V12: Pagani Zonda
V10: Lexus LFA
V8: Maserati GTS
V6: Alfa Romeo 156 GTA
B6: Porsche 911 GT3
I6: BMW M3 CSL
B4: Subaru BRZ
I4: Honda S2000

What is missing? I5. Not sure. My dad had a Fiat Bravo HGT, and I really like the I5 sound, it was NA. The Audi 2.5 TFSI is turbocharged, so the sound is less clear.
 
If I were to vote for my favourite inline 4 it wouldn't be the typical V-tec Honda, no it would be a Cosworth BDA for me.

Yes engine too is amazing. It powers the BAC Mono.

But it is still more a race engine.
