Photography Wimmer's Night Photography Trip (Part 1)

I went out tonight to do some night photography and experiment with shutter speeds and exposure times.

This picture is insanely cool for one reason - it's almost like a slow motion video. The light you see around the car is me walking around it with a flashlight. You can also see that my dog was watching and thinking what the hell I was doing, then decided to take a step forward. Taken with 30 seconds exposure at 5.6f. It was basically a "test shot" as I was setting the camera.


Here we have the good ones! Again, the cool lights around the car were generated by a flashlight I was carrying as I was slowly walking around the car. 30 seconds @ 5.6f.




The local Audi dealership and an A5 3.0 TDI Quattro. The first picture was taken at 13 seconds exposure @ 18f while the second one used the same shutter speed but 30 seconds exposure.

I wanted to see how a close up of the Audi logo with water droplets would look like at night with the surrounding lighting and the camera. Came out pretty well. 20 seconds exposure @ 18f.


Don't be fooled! This is an A4 1.9 TDI that was made to look like an S4! 30 seconds @ 18f, yeah I became a little lazy with setting the shutter and exposure ratings...


Photographed through glass. These cars were inside the showroom. 1/5 seconds @ 5.6f.


Volkswagen Touareg at the local Audi-VW dealership. 30 seconds exposure @ 5.6f as well.


Hope you liked them. If I have time (and if it's not so friggin cold!) I'll take some more night photography trips.

Awesome night shots Christian!! You took them with your Nikon, right?! I ask, because I really want to get a new camera and at the moment, I don't know which camera I should choose - Nikon or a Canon?

I am surprised the Audi dealership just leave their car parked in an open area like that with no fence to keep people away from the cars.

I took these with my Nikon D-40, my Olympus FE-200 is incapable of shots like these since it doesn't have a shutter speed and exposure time option. God I can't touch that thing anymore!

You might want to contact Alok because he recommended the Nikon brand to me. He said they're heavier than the Canon's and that's what you need for good photographs since you can "feel the camera better". Canon's are too "light" according to him. Both are good camera's and it basically comes down to personal preference I suppose.

See if Nikon offers 99 Euros off the price in Hannover. They did this down here because Canon reduced their prices big time. Isn't competition great?

Yep, for these kinds of shots you need a tripod to keep the camera still. I was afraid that some of the pictures I took would be blurry because there was a very strong (and sharp ice cold) wind blowing last night. Indeed, some pictures had a slight blur in them courtesy of the wind. I only posted the good ones. The wind was especially strong when I took the BMW shots.

Audi, VW, Mercedes, Fiat, Ford, Opel, Alfa Romeo and many more car dealerships here do that. They do have security services driving by sometime at night to check things out. I was once asked by them "What the hell I was doing...".

The only dealership I know which parks their cars inside a garage at night is the local BMW dealer.

Christian, try shining light on the car with long exposure, but in a way that the light is not facing the camera at any time. It'll look....interesting

I will definitely try that soon!

By the way, do you know of any existing chart for example that tells you when to use different shutter speeds and exposure times? Just for reference. I want to get a feel for this.
