Today's shoot for Octane Magazine Germany allowed me to meet the legendary Jochen Mass!

This magazine story is about how certain classics react with new and old tires on a dry and wet track.

The cars involved were a BMW 1602 Convertible, Mercedes-Benz 280SL Automatic W113 "Pagoda" (provided by the Mercedes-Benz Classic Center in Stuttgart!!!) and a Triumph TR4.

The tires were provided by the Dutch firm Vredestein and a film crew from www.topspeedtv.de was also present to film the action. I will probably be on TV at some point since I was running all over the place taking photos.

Mr. Mass is a pleasant and fun man and he also took me for a ride around the test track in the Mercedes, punishing the car hard but having it under control at all times. Side note, that 2.8-l inline-6 engine is a gem! Fuel injection makes it responsive and sound amazing!

Anyway, some snapshots from today!

Wonderful experience you must have been delighted to meet him

My job as a photographer has allowed me to meet a few celebrities, and I am always a bit worried that they are stuck up etc.

But Mr. Mass was very down-to-earth, funny and pleasant. We had a nice lunch and I sat across from him and listened to his stories as a race driver. Fascinating stuff! :)

That’s cool!!
What did Mass say about the old new tires?

You will need to find out on www.topspeedtv.de. :D

Unfortunately I didn't get to hear much of the interviews with the film crew. I had to photograph everything from the track action to tire changes and some behind the scenes etc. I was in motion all day!

I remember the Mercedes having the best braking qualities with new and old tires on a wet and dry track, the BMW with new tires and the Triumph had the longest braking path with both new and old tires on wet and dry. I believe, though, that part of this depended on the quality of the brakes. The Mercedes was in great shape and maintained by the MB Classic Center, the BMW was used-up as you can see and the Triumph belonged to someone who admitted that it was hardly being driven. All those factors can affect the condition of the brakes.

However, the Triumph appeared to be the car which made Mr. Mass smile the most.

The winner of a sole GP during his F1 career. 1975 Spanish GP-under most tragic circumstances.

Vredestein tyres? 20 years ago I was getting Vredesteins fitted to the back of my front wheel drive car because they were the cheapest and worst option, and therefore the best choice for the yobbish driving and handbrake turns I was doing at the time.. they must have come a long way!

The first thing I did was try to get a discount for the winter tires which I need for my upcoming A250! :D
