USA: 3 compact fwd vehicles expected by 2012

By Diana T. Kurylko | Automotive News

Mercedes-Benz will ship three compact fwd vehicles to the United States starting in 2012, including one with an alternative drivetrain.

Either a compact SUV or a coupe derived from the B-class platform will go on sale first. Neither will wear a B-class badge. Joachim Schmidt, executive vice president for sales, did not disclose the planned vehicles' names.

The United States won't get the smaller hatchback that goes on sale in Europe at the end of next year as an A-class model.

Schmidt said Mercedes later will add a compact van featuring its electric drivetrains. Mercedes is considering a fuel cell model or an electric with a range-extending gasoline engine. Details and timing are still being worked out.

The van will have a second floor to house a battery. This approach won't use up precious interior room, Schmidt said. The fuel cell van also will help Mercedes meet strict U.S. fuel economy standards for the 2016 model year.

"I don't know when this will come. We are working very hard on this alternative drivetrain," Schmidt said.

"It is important for us at Mercedes-Benz to be the leader, not the follower."

The 3 compact FWD models will be
- New generation A-Class
- New Generation B-Class
- All New BLK (based on B-Class, it will be like a small SUV)

2012 is going to be a knockdown year for Mercedes-Benz: New S-Class, GL, SL, A-Class, CLC (the small CLS) and most likely a facelift for the GLK. We've seen them, but don't know when/if they're coming, a pair Black Series C-Classes a wagon and a sedan. We NEED both please. The SLS Black Series is a for sure, I would bet on a summer 2012 debut. The new small SUV, nicknamed the BLK is most likely in 2013. Then comes the E-Class facelift and the mega S-Class models after the "regular" ones are launched. Exciting times at Mercedes-Benz.

Agreed! :)

Here's that article again, announcing the CLC for the 2012 New York Auto Show.

2013 Mercedes-Benz CLC Sedan To Debut at 2012 New York Auto Show

By Ed Hellwig, Editor - Edmunds Inside Line

The all-new compact sedan will make its world debut at the 2012 New York Auto Show.
Like the CLS, the smaller CLC will be a four-door "coupe."
The CLC will be the first of several smaller Mercedes-Benz models scheduled for U.S. sales in the next few years.

FRANKFURT, Germany — The 2013 Mercedes-Benz CLC sedan will make its world debut at the 2012 New York Auto according to company officials. The all-new sedan will mimic the "coupe" styling used by the larger CLS sedan.

The introduction of the CLC will mark the beginning of a push by Mercedes-Benz to enter the higher-volume, entry-level luxury market below the current C-Class. Executives were quick to emphasize that the CLC will not be a stripped-down, price leader model. "This will be a real Mercedes-Benz," one executive stressed.

Although not confirmed, a compact SUV is expected to follow shortly after the CLC and may be called the GLC. Both vehicles are expected to ride on Mercedes' new Modular Front Architecture (MFA), an all-new front-wheel drive platform introduced on the latest B-Class hatchback.

Spy video of the new CLC sedan shows a profile very similar to the current CLS with a sloping roof line that looks more like a coupe than a traditional sedan.

Inside Line says: Mercedes is easing its way into a lower price class with the stylish CLC instead of diving in head first with the B-Class. Smart move.

The forthcoming A-Class lineup will include a small class coupe, tipped to be badged CLC. This new model will sport a rear-wheel-drive platform, developed using the MFA underpinnings as basis. But the CLC AMG version, expected to show up at the end of 2012, might go for an all-wheel-drive architecture instead, joined with a new 4-cylinder inline, twinturbocharged engine, that could be capable of achieving over 300 BHP.
