Macan The next generation of the Porsche Macan will be electric

The Porsche Macan is a compact luxury crossover SUV (D-segment) produced by Porsche since 2014. It is the smaller SUV from Porsche below the Cayenne. The first-generation Macan went on production from February 2014 with petrol and diesel engine options. In 2024, Porsche released the second-generation Macan which is a battery electric vehicle built on the dedicated Premium Platform Electric (PPE) EV platform.

According to a Press release issued by Porsche today, the next generation of the Macan will be a fully electric series, making this the first all-electric compact SUV from Porsche.

The next generation of the Porsche Macan will be electric

Stuttgart. Porsche brings electric mobility to its site in Saxony: The Supervisory Board of Porsche AG has decided to manufacture the next generation of the Macan as a fully electric series. This will be the first all-electric compact SUV from Porsche, and is due to roll off the assembly line at the start of the next decade. The development represents an expansion of the Porsche range in the field of electromobility: the Taycan – the first purely electrically driven sports car from Porsche – will be launched to market at the end of 2019, followed shortly thereafter by its derivative, the Taycan Cross Turismo.

“Electromobility and Porsche go together perfectly; not just because they share a high-efficiency approach, but especially because of their sporty character,” comments Oliver Blume, Chairman of the Board of Management of Porsche AG. “By 2022 we will be investing more than six billion euros in electric mobility, and by 2025 50% of all new Porsche vehicles could have an electric drive system. Nevertheless, over the next ten years we will focus on a drive mix consisting of even further optimised petrol engines, plug-in hybrid models, and purely electrically operated sports cars. Our aim is to take a pioneering role in technology, and for this reason we will continue to consistently align the company with the mobility of the future.”

The decision to manufacture the next generation of the Macan at the company’s Leipzig site was taken as early as the beginning of July last year. Making this investment in electromobility at the Leipzig site creates the opportunity to produce fully electric vehicles on the existing production line in future. The next generation of the Macan fires the starting pistol for electrification. Like the Taycan, this compact SUV features 800-volt technology and is based on the Porsche PPE architecture (Premium Platform Electric) developed in collaboration with Audi AG – highlighting the future viability of the site and enhancing its flexibility and efficiency even further.

Porsche Leipzig GmbH started series production of the Cayenne SUV in 2002, with 259 employees. Since then, the site has been continually developed to become one of the most advanced and sustainable production facilities in the automotive industry. The Macan model signified a revolution right back in 2011, and is a real success story: when it was launched, the Leipzig plant was expanded into a “full plant”, which included its own body shop and paint shop. When the factory started operations in February 2014, 40,000 units per year of the compact SUV were planned; today it produces more than 90,000 units annually for global markets. What is currently the final expansion stage was put into operation two years ago, making it possible for the Panamera series to now also be fully manufactured in Leipzig, and bringing employee numbers up to today’s figure of more than 4,000. Since the groundbreaking ceremony in February 2000, Porsche has invested more than 1.3 billion euros in development in Leipzig.

Come 2023, the presentation of a PPE-based Panamera III appears likely. There are some indications that it will be VAGs' first "low ride height PPE-based" automobile, probably preceding a 4 door Bentley sedoupe based on the same platform.

The next Panny and Cayenne are likely to follow.

I can only see the 911 continuing with ICE engines once this gen of Porsches is over. Maybe the 718 gets a successor with ICE engines as well.

Some time ago @sako97 mentioned being invited to a preview of the long awaited Ferrari competitor. I could see that car not being all-electric.

Do they mean PURELY electric, or hybrids? Because electric cars are not good for long distance driving and I certainly wouldn't be interested.

I hope you are wrong because this is a premature and regrettable decision by Porsche. However an all electric Macan could be timely in 2022 if:

1. Real world range is 350-500 miles even in winter conditions.
2. Battery can charge from zero to full in 30min.
3. There are public 800 volt chargers almost everywhere because hardly any homes will have them or even 400 volt chargers.

Do they mean PURELY electric, or hybrids?
Full electric Macan.

There are still a lot of concerns that EV has to overcome! For instance, battery power under extreme weather condition, recharge time, battery life span, battery recycle, etc. ICE Macan will continue to hold its value until Porsche can prove full EV Macan provide same level or better driving dynamics, quality of material, versatility in cargo space, overall cost of ownership experience. Up coming Taycan may provide us some clue on that.

whats ppe

PS
Porsche are going all in with this electric thing, very interesting.

"PPE"= Premium Platform Electric. A Porsche/Audi co-development, utilized to underpin larger executive/luxury segment automobiles. To be available in elevated ride height (SUV/Crossovers) and low ride height (sedans/sedoupes/2+2 GTs) iterations. It appears to be an evolution of Porsches' "J1" electric platform (upcoming Taycan and Audi etron GT).

Confidence in the Taycan?
That's what I thought too. Interest for the Taycan from existing Porsche customers might be so great that Porsche believes that an electric Macan will be as well received.

Another reason for going all electric is that regulators are increasingly enforcing stricter emissions targets to the point that downsizing, extra filters, 48 volt systems and boring gearbox software will dull the majority of ICE cars.

Basically Porsche don't believe that they can make an exciting ICE powered Macan between 2022-2027 but can make a blisteringly quick electric one that will knock the socks of people.

In the foreseeable future EVERY car model will be electric. ;) So ...

As said many times: German / European car makers will start (the serious phase of) the BEV era with 2021/22. In 2025 they will already be serious players in BEV markets - that's only 1 automobile generation away. :)

With regard to BEVs':

Current range and charging time deficits must surely be issues of utmost priority that require rapid addressing on the part of manufacturers as well as battery and EV component suppliers. And then there is the issue of an effective infrastructure that will be, in part, a task for government institutions. With regard to the former: in view of rapid technological advancements, I am actually quite optimistic that the tasks at hand will be resolved. But regarding the latter...? Being a citizen and resident of Absurdistan has taught me to bridle my expectations.

Penetration of electric cars will accelerate if Exxon, Texaco, Shell and BP install fast chargers at their gas stations. It’s not enough for supermarkets and malls to hoofed chargers because those are hogged for at least 20min.

Exactly these companies have zero interest to accelerate this penetration.

When you’ve seen some of the big Tesla supercharger stations in Norway over summer with all 8-16 chargers full and another 2-3 cars waiting for each charger it completely puts me off even thinking about buying an electric car. I don’t not have any desire to wait upwards of three hours to charge my vehicle, that’s simply nuts.

I did have a good look around the E-Tron Quattro today, it’s really is a beautifully built vehicle, Audi did a magnificent job on the interior. It shows up the Tesla S and X for the cheap and nasty devices they are. It’s just a shame the range isn’t good, it can’t be driven from where I live to Oslo which is just over 400km away on a single charge, so why buy one?

I wish manufacturers would start getting serious about hydrogen!!

When is the next Macan expected? It seems Porsche has the timing of the current generation very off. Seen in late 2013 to go on sale in early 2014, the vehicle was almost 5 years old before the FL was shown. Based on the old Q5 platform it seems to be hampered in certain aspects compared to the newer generation of competitors. Perhaps the FL will have a shorter running time than the pre-fl?

Phew. Common sense has prevailed! (y)

Having hammered an iPace around a tight private circuit I know very well that they are capable of leaving even ICE sports cars in the distance. Getting behind the wheel of a V6 F-Type and even a 4 cylinder E-Pace SUV, I quickly learned that I prefer the organic fluidity of ICE cars.

As brilliant as the iPace is, I wasn’t left with the desire to own one.

I think most people who like cars feel the same way, but the tide is turning against us and soon we will be in the minority. I know the replacement for my two current cars will be electric, economically I would be cutting my throat if I went any other way.

Your situation is unique because you live in Norway. In the UK, we are at least 2-3 years away from enough electric cars to replace a Nissan Qashaqi, E-Class saloon, Golf GTI or Audi Q5.
