Porsche considering hybrid system for next generation 911

Next-gen likely coming in 2018
Porsche CEO Matthias Müller has not excluded the possibility of implementing a hybrid system in the next generation 911.

An all-new Porsche 911 is expected to come out around 2018 and it could end up being offered as a hybrid since Müller told CarAdvice that Porsche has already analyzed this possibility. When asked if a gasoline-electric 911 hybrid could happen, Müller responded with "of course, why not?" but a final decision has not been taken yet.

He did use the word "maybe" and said "there is no reason against it and we will see if we have some reasons to do it." Moreover, Müller hinted at a plan to launch hybrid derivatives of the Boxster and Cayman duo but at first the two models will receive four-cylinder engines which will be introduced on the next generation. Porsche has already returned to four cylinder engines as the Macan recently received a 237 bhp 2.0-liter turbo.

It makes sense for a number of reasons as Cayenne and Panamera both already have hybrid models and the 911 is the father sports car with high powered engines as well so to reduce its carbon footprint they would need to bring out a hybrid. Also it will need this to keep up with the BMW i8. Maybe some of the hybrid tech used in the 918 will filter down to this model as well.

Few things in automobiledom are currently more fascinating than the speculation pertaining to Porsches' future line of cars. Will the next 911 grow further in dimensions and luxury content ? How will its' traditional rear-engined configuration fit into the ever increasing considerations concerning the streamlined uniformity of production processes ? Have the Cayman/Boxster become so competent that they have evolved into bonafide 911 alternatives ? Will an even larger and more luxurious 911 successor render a Panny II coupe/cabriolet superfluous ? Will we see a sub-Panny II "Pajun" ? What effects will increasing cooperation with corporate sibling Bentley have ?
