Oh most defintely. I already have the road in mind I want to test it out on. IF it works as advertised it will OWN the market for a good 18 months. I don't see Audi or BMW trying to copy or match it, but Lexus yes. They will definitely try.

Well frankly as we speak Lexus needs a $Billion or two R&D sign-off from Mr. Toyoda. At this moment in Automotive history they are 2 generations behind especially the W222. So the Japs has there work cut out and IMO the W222 has caught them off guard.

Lexus have been working on what is missing from their current range which is needed for its key market the US including design concepts for compact and mid-size SUV models.

When you think about it, there is no excuse for them. The current LS460 launched the same time the W221 did, so they've had the same 8 years Mercedes did. It does indeed seem like Lexus has run out of steam. I still can't get over facelifting 7 year old cars in 2 segments, the IS and LS, but they spent the $$ to do an all new GS. The GS HAS NEVER SOLD WELL vs the IS and LS. Doesn't make sense.

I have a theory.
I would say the reason they only did a facelift on the IS is to protect ES sales in its first months on sale. The ES is their cash cow. And the IS is in a similar market (well not really, but to the unknowing they would be).

The LS just doesn't matter. Its buyers are comprised of people that are too scared to buy a 7-Series, A8, or S-Class. They would buy it if they literally made it from poop. It just has to be big, comfortable, and reliable.

I think the 2009-2010 recalls for unintended acceleratoin and the money involved, which they're still paying out, forced them to divert funds. They knew a new S-Class was coming just as it always does, every 7 years or so. The IS and ES have sold in record numbers together and they're vastly different cars so that clearly isn't it. They cheaped out for some reason. The IS and LS don't even get engine tweaks! Both cars are 7 years old!!!

What Lexus will probably do is introduce an all new Lexus LS in 2-3 years to try to take the S-Class down mid-cycle. Oh the LS matters, it is the cornerstone of the Lexus brand. It was the brand for a long time.

The W221 manhandled the LS460 back in 2007 when they were both new, this time it will be outright slaughter comparing the 2 cars for 2014.

Car & driver - Pullman rendered. (IF posted before, sorry. Can't blame me it's loooong thread)

I guess I don't see why everyone is excited about the Pullman. It is just a stretched S-Class. Nothing more.

Roll and Bentley customer baiting is going to require so much more.

M

@Merc1
True, yet this time around volumes won't matter to keep the idea alive as was the case with Maybach. And believe me the Pullman will have a customer base both the Middle-East and China. Oh yes and a few dictators from Africa, sadly Pres. Robert Mugabe may be out, poor bloke is 89.

I know that. You know that, and everyone on this forum knows that. But to Mr. & Mrs. John Beige they are both Lexi for 35k. That was my point.

My point is that they can't really be aggressive with the IS without hurting the sales of the ES.

And I'm telling you that isn't true. Both cars have been strong sellers side by side since 2006-07 when the IS and ES were redesigned. Buyers can tell the difference between a small, cramped sporty sedan an a larger, pillow riding one.

M

Yep, the ES and IS are totally different buyer.
One is a rear wheel drive smaller sport. And the other is a FWD luxed up Camry.

-First of all, the Pullman is a proper factory Limo. The XL is not a Pullman. And whoever chopped that phot for C&D needs to be slapped.

That render cannot be a pullman. Pullman has 3 rows of door and the styling will be different from the rest of the 222. That render could be the render of the xlwb which is literally the stretched version of the lwb.

I drove my first W221 250.000 km, the second one 200.000 km and had, fortunately, never any problems with Airmatic/air-suspension. With current CLS after just only 73.000 km, also no problems.
Silkeye, are you driving your cars yourself or do you have drivers employed? But then again, I think your "Angestellten" wouldn't be driving like an idiot with guests in the back.

well the half of the time they drive them by themselvs, coz normally you bring your guest to his destination and leave.
sometimes you bring him back...so they can drive mad, and trust me they will :) they try each button a million times maybe, but this is a merc, it should stand this driving type. they test it under the worst circumstances, coldest weathers,
hottest temperatures.

but maybe im just unlucky.

need to add and correct something,

i was today at my bmw dealer and had to wait for some consumable parts...
so i walked into the showroom and i saw a 2013 7series...

i sat in to check the car ... inside it was brown and with the standard leather...
i was dissapointed, and i didnt know that this standard leather felt so cheap.

my 7s has the extended oyster leather plus additional leather - and this makes
the car much more sophisticated...

i agree that the standard s-class leather beats the standard leather in the 7s.

The pullman has historically had four doors. The extra length--in immovable pannels--houses two rear seats. I doubt these will have a circulation larger than a LaFerrari. These are really nothing new to the line-up, and previously simply weren't listed as members, but rather special factory editions, just as the bullet-proof Guard S-Class.

The XLWB is a bona-fide new addition to the lineup, and quite frankly I am curious to see who they think will take it. The new S, from what I have read already, comes with an already impressive list of options--five different types of rear seat--so I believe they are going for the chauffer-driven market. They must be expecting the market to get quite a bit better to unleash these to the market.

And some new info (badly translated by google translate):

Start with 3 different engines - S500 HYBRID PLUS and 9G-TRONIC automatic transmission come later
To release for sale of the new S-Class on 15 May, the new luxury flagship comes with three different engines at the start. At the beginning there will be a diesel and two petrol. Entry makes the S 350 BlueTEC with 3 liters and 258 hp. It follows the S 400 HYBRID with a displacement of 3.5 liters and about 326 hp. Preliminary top model is the S 500 with 4.6 liters and 435 hp. S350 BlueTEC in the V6 diesel engine (OM642) is working with the standard 7G-TRONIC PLUS, then later of the diesel with the new 9G-TRONIC automatic transmission - give - internally named the 725th When the S400 HYBRID V6 petrol engine (M276), comes together in the 7G-TRONIC PLUS integrated hybrid module with electric motor with around 30 hp. The top model, the S 500 is equipped with a V8 petrol engine (M278) under the hood. Also here is the start time until only the 7G-TRONIC PLUS 7-speed built in, 9-speed automatic is nachgeschoben at a later date. The new 9-speed transmission developed by Mercedes-Benz itself and will be produced in Untertürkheim plant - unlike other manufacturers who have purchased their gear at ZF / Sachs.
In the fall, the range of S-Class engines then added two more models. It is the S 500 4MATIC with permanent all-wheel drive and also as the rear-wheel drive with a 4.6 liter V8 petrol engine (M278) with 435 hp. The second follows the S 63 AMG with V8 petrol engine and 5.5 liter displacement. We estimate that in comparison to the E-Class, the engine further enhances the performance and will provide almost 600 hp.
On the engine side that is in the S-Class, but not the end of the story. In 2014 in addition to the S 500 HYBRID and S 600 PLUS, also the top model of the series of the S 65 AMG will come with a twelve-cylinder petrol engine on the market. Also complement the S 350 BlueTEC 4MATIC and as another hybrid model, the S 300 BlueTEC HYBRID with 2.2 liter diesel (OM651) and a combined output of diesel plus electric motor of 231 hp, the model range.
