don't you think it could've sold better?

Of course it could, but we will never know and BMW will tell ut it is a success. And it probably is, because they have sold as many as they planned and the face of it makes sales of the pricier 2-series a lot easier.

yes so the 1er is purposely made to look worse. i don't know why this is necessary in light that MB and Audi makes their junior models as good looking as they could, and their upper models are doing well also?

It could also be that the BMW designers did not know better. They might actually think that those headlights are really fitting.

I personally value an identity rather than good looks per se. The Audi A3 saloon is undeniably good looking, but I can't help thinking it's also a little bland. I think the 1 Series, especially the M Sport, is distinctive and actually not that bad looking. And after driving the M135i last week, I couldn't give a toss what it looks like. You only look at the car when you're walking to or from it. You spend more time looking at the interior, which to me is far more important.

^well yea, you "experience" a car by driving it, you "look" at a car when you're outside but dare i give an analogy, which i hope won't be too inappropriate, i think a man would still give a toss about how a chick looks, despite he gets very good "experience" with the girl in bed.. so i can't really say i won't care how a car looks despite it drives well~~ but yea hope the LCI will do enough to freshen it up, at the moment i think the A3 is the best looker out of the three, the A class is the most dramatic looking which leaves the 1er the most weird looking although the whole car in general is a well thought through design, bar the front.

@SCOTT27

It's all gone rather quiet. I remember you saying a month ago that the next launch from BMW will be the 1 Series LCI. However, I have been told by a BMW dealer (yes, yes, dealers are usually the last to know but the info was very specific), that the next update for the 1 Series will NOT be the LCI. Week 36 production (1st September) begins on the MY15 1 Series and there are very few changes other than the 125d getting 228hp (up from 218hp). He says the LCI will not happen until March 2015.

I am basically waiting to order the LCI M135i so any info would be very much appreciated.

P.S. I know he has an incentive to make me want to order the 1 Series now but he knows full well that I am waiting for the LCI so he is being up front. He has seen the documents.

Expecting some real and useful product information from Scott? Come on Betty. You should know better.

BMW’s current cheapest car, the 1 Series, is about to get a fresh face, when celebrating its fourth anniversary, next spring. The Life Cycle Impulse for the F20 platform is set to start production in March 2015 and we’re hoping for more than just technical updates.
Don’t get us wrong, new engines and new tech sound good too but if there’s one thing we’d change about the 1 Series, that’s its exterior design. While round the back things are rather ok, up front, those googly eyes make it look absolutely dreadful.

Judging from out spyshots, these two areas are actually the only ones that will get any kind of love from the designers. If round the back, the bumper looks basically the same as on the current model, up front some changes are barely noticeable. Unfortunately, the headlights are the same, which would mean that BMW won’t get rid of them. Not now, not too soon either.

The big changes will come under the bonnet though. Since the 1 Series was designed as a budget car (if that’s even possible over at BMW) the new B-family engines will be introduced on them after being used first on MINI models.

New engines coming in November

First, the old PSA-developed 1.6-liter diesel engines on the 114d and 116d will be taken out of production, in November 2014. They will be replaced by the B37 units found on the One D and Cooper D models. Making 95 HP and 220 Nm of torque or 116 HP and 270 Nm of torque, the two 3-cylinder 1.5-liter engines are more efficient than the ones they are replacing and EU6 compatible.

Production of LCI 1 Series to Start in March

After this first step, when LCI production starts in March, next year, we’ll get to see some new petrol engines as well. The B38 units will be introduced on the 114i and 116i while the 118d will get up upgraded version of the B37 diesel. All of them are 3-cylinder 1.5-liter units with up to 40% interchangeable parts.

The 120d and 125d model will also get new engines, EU6 compliant, going by the codename B47. You could recognize them from the facelifted X3 that is already using them.

The M135i, the car seen in these photos, will keep on using the N55HP engine until July 2016. At that point it will also be replaced with a B58 unit that’s also more powerful and efficient. At the same time, the 120i and 125i models will get the B48 engine, a 2-liter, 4-cylinder turbocharged unit that will be replacing the N20 used today.

2015 BMW 1 Series Facelift Spied with a New Face

It seems like BMW will change the face of the 1 Series with the facelift that is due next year, a car wearing new headlights being spotted out testing by our spy photographers today. The design reminds us of the 2 Series but we can’t be absolutely sure until we get to see it camo free.

That’s rather peculiar because up until now, all LCI prototypes we’ve seen appeared to be sporting small if any design changes. Furthermore, they all seemed to be focused on the front fascia, the rear being left untouched.

This time, things go a lot deeper. The front end looks like it’s going to follow into the footsteps of the 2 Series, with similar headlights and a new grille as well as a new front bumper.

Going round the back, more changes can be noticed. Unlike the look of the current model, it seems like the taillights will be upgraded to feature the BMW LED strips found on newer models like the X5 and X4. We might also be in for some small changes on the sides, where all that camouflage goes but we don’t have any official info at the moment.

As for technical bits, expect the new B-series engine family to be introduced on various models. The 114i model could get the new EU6 compliant 1.2-liter 3-cylinder petrol engine found on the MINI One while the 116i could start using the B38 1.5-liter, 3-cylinder powerplant from the Cooper hardtop.

Going further up in the range, few other changes are expected. The N20 units will be kept meaning that all 12x models will keep their specs unchanged and the M135i will also continue with the N55HP engine until the end of production when it will be replaced by the B58 unit.

More technology could be made available inside as well, including the iDrive touch-sensitive controller, new driver assistance features and active and passive safety items. Expect the LCI model to be launched early next year, at the Geneva Motor Show, at the latest.

2015 BMW 1 Series Facelift Spied with a New Face

Now this is news!

Completely new & redesigned F20 1er LCI prototype.
Not only with changed bumpers & revised grille as seen on previous prototypes ... but also featuring new headlight & rear light cluster design and graphics, revised hatch / tail gate design. WOW! I didn't see that coming. All the LCI F20 prototypes I've seen before have featured slightly revised bumpers & grille, and nothing more. Obviously the Board change its mind & ordered a more severe facelift.

I know they had 2er fronts attached to 1ers , but looking here it is either clever and expert disguising with the camouflage or they ordered more changes.
Because the car that followed afterwards does not illustrate similar changes.

This looks promising. I like the rims. Interesting that board wanted more thorough facelift - the 1 Series is selling very well, regardless of its looks.

Nice! Now do I buy a 125 b48 Msport or a M135i?
Preferably I would like the 3-cyl 178 bhp that journalists drove september 2012, but I guess thats not likely since I heard nothing on a stronger 3-cu than the 134 hp in for example 218 active tourer. And the b48 x20 is something like 190.
As a journalist who drove the 3 cyl in the Cooper wrote: Never ever have I wanted a sports exhaust so much on a car... So add a M-performance exhaust for the 3 cyl.

WOOOWW Fantastic!! What a huge difference!!

Are the new taillights expanding to the boot lid?

Will need to follow up two interesting scenarios tomorrow. One potentially being a 1M Sporthatch with the M2 front end? Hence the oval outline at the exposed central intake?
The other , a potential model that is based on the F20 for cost and packaging reasons.
