Yes, laser light works different completely. I had a conversation with Johannes Geiwitz (lighting engineer) and I can only go by what he said. I couldn't understand half of what he was saying because he is a lighting engineer and i am not haha but he said that almost all Germans use similar LED systems. However, Mercedes at the time (April of this year) had the best systems in his opinion as they are incredible accurate and adaptive. They use two independently operated LED units (compared to only one unit for Audi and BMW) and 24 independent LEDs.

The new E-class system will surely be another step ahead. The range of the lights is 485m (laser lights are 600m). But no one really needs more range. That's why lighting power alone isn't what makes the LEDs great, it's the way they can be used.

But who knows, maybe in 5 years laser lights will be as adaptive and can provide a grid like the LEDs.
How about lexus matrix light and those from lexus?

But Mercedes was also quite adamant HUD is bad and 7 is the appropriate number of gears... :)

You are just flat wrong Sunny, it is 9 and MB never said 7 was the right number. 5 Years from now I'll be here to deny that they said 9 was right number. ;)

HUD has been explained. Their safety 'Guru' who resisted retired. The marketing guys got their wish and HUD was endorsed. It's s similar case to why MB's had such large steering wheels for so long until the guy in charge of that department retired.

I don't believe I read them saying 7 was optimal. I have read that they have stated 9 is optimal. But you know what, things change and they'll have a 12 speed in 2025 even if it is just for marketing sake, or some technological change makes it optimal.

So I guess, we have to just wait for the current headlight guru to retire :).

I think all the gurus from all departments will retire soon and then Mercedes will be in total chaos! Lol!:ROFLMAO:

But halogens are on BMW's and Audi's too. As long as fleet car buyers are there halogen is here to stay unless they can invent something that looks better but cheap as halogen.

Stunning interior, but very disappointed that they were not able to reintegrate a key pad and an analog instrument cluster.
the touch pad has been a huge failure and MB is either oblivious or stubborn to fix it.

I will answer my own question:

There is a difference. Current Mercedes LED lights contain 24 LEDs on each module, but in the new E-class this has been increased to 84.

I was always told that the orginal LED lens in the CLS (first car to have it) had 72 LEDs behind the projector lens. Not a big fan of the LED. Xenon is dirt cheap.

New E-class interior looks brilliant and class leading in that video. BMW and Audi have some work to do to match this interior for luxury feel combined with high tech.

Gotta say, the keypad in my CLA, I use everyday. So convenient to dial numbers etc. Analog instruments I don't really care about considering how terrible they look.

Why do you say the touch pad has been a failure? Either way why on earth would they go back 15 years and stick a key pad in a new car?

I used the touchpad in my moms c class i found it very easy to use.

i agree obviously its easier to press the numbers like the old gen mercs but i think its a step back.

Also Mercedes seems to be busy upgrading the touchpad as we have seen in this thread a new touchpad will be available soon not sure when but we seen the rectangular shaped one simalar to a mobile phone already in preparation.

What would have been nice for dialing was if the touchpad menu bacame a touch number pad like simalar to your dialling screen on your mobile phone that would make life easier.

Soon we will probably get a keypad on the steering wheel the way things are going lol.

The key pad is still in many of the current cars. In fact the facelifted ML has the touch pad and the key pad still in the radio head unit. In addition of having easy access to presets for the radio, it's intuitive. If you spend the time I do, training new owners to use the features in the car, you'd understand. The touch pad isn't better than the COMAND knob that it redundantly duplicates. It takes longer to move the cursor using the touch pad than using the knob. For example if I want to move the cursor from Nav to Settings. I have to swipe my finger multiple times. With the knob, I simply rotate in one motion and bam, done.

Another example, the 2014 S had the key pad underneath the handrest for the Comand knob. It also had the touch display on the screen so it showed which button your finger was on. Very nice and convenient. Now, if you are using the phone and you have, manually input a phone number, or input a pass code after you've initiated a call, or use voice mail, or whatever, it is an arduous process. You also lose * dialing for radio stations. You could quick dial a radio station by pressing the * key and then the call numbers. On satellite this was particularly nice, since there are literally hundreds of stations.

The touch pad is horrible.

Oh, and the lack of analog speedo and tach is just sad. I can understand in the S, but there is something about having the analog gauges, nicely trimmed in chrome, and having 3D. They could have at least designed some 3D elements into the display. It looks so devoid of personality.

All of that is nice, but I still think it is a dated concept and needed to go. That said I don't have to live with it either so you could be right.
