The key pad is still in many of the current cars. In fact the facelifted ML has the touch pad and the key pad still in the radio head unit. In addition of having easy access to presets for the radio, it's intuitive. If you spend the time I do, training new owners to use the features in the car, you'd understand. The touch pad isn't better than the COMAND knob that it redundantly duplicates. It takes longer to move the cursor using the touch pad than using the knob. For example if I want to move the cursor from Nav to Settings. I have to swipe my finger multiple times. With the knob, I simply rotate in one motion and bam, done.
Another example, the 2014 S had the key pad underneath the handrest for the Comand knob. It also had the touch display on the screen so it showed which button your finger was on. Very nice and convenient. Now, if you are using the phone and you have, manually input a phone number, or input a pass code after you've initiated a call, or use voice mail, or whatever, it is an arduous process. You also lose * dialing for radio stations. You could quick dial a radio station by pressing the * key and then the call numbers. On satellite this was particularly nice, since there are literally hundreds of stations.
The touch pad is horrible.
