Seems Daimler AG has now managed to trim development time of new models, based on the shorter testing cycle (compared to W212) for the W213. Does anyone think that possibly an internal delay occurred, resulting in these rather late appearing mules? What we've heard from some of those that participated in Los Angeles W213 design clinics (January 2013), is that they negatively reviewed what was the "2017 E350".I suppose MB abdicates the very first prototypes of the W213 due to the MRA plattform the e-class will be based on. Powertrain and suspension can be tested with the W205 body which is a lot cheaper than using the W213 body at this stage.
It would make perfect sense to use parts built with the standard moulds for the physical mock up rather than using pre-production samples. On this account I expect first spy shots 18 months before market launch which should be in spring-time 2016.
Unfortunately I didn't see this reply earlier. Well I hope they did it right then, as after 18 months I would wager 4-8 months being spent correcting and finalising a different body design since early last year. Likely not what happened, but at least it's still on schedule. One of its competitors from north of Germany and to the east of Ireland can't say the same of course. If Mercedes botches the E-Class they'll be in serious trouble. A funny looking, but low volume SL is one thing, but the E has to be right. If that clinic went south then I wouldn't be surprised if there is a delay. I don't get it though, why would the E come out ugly after the stunning S and C? They must be trying to move the current design language onwards and it didn't come out right.

I'm curious why anyone thinks this is the case? Does this appear to be a modified C? And why would they be seen testing an AMG before even the regular model?2016 Mercedes E63 AMG mule spied on the Nurburgring
2016 Mercedes E-Class / E63 AMG mule
Will be based on the MRA platform
Our spies have snapped the first pictures of what is believed to be a chassis testing mule for the 2016 Mercedes E63 AMG.
Caught wearing a modified C-Class body, the 2016 E63 AMG will ride on a longer and wider version of the MRA platform. The model should also feature the usual AMG styling cues including an aggressive front bumper and a four-tailpipe sports exhaust system.
Power will likely be provided by the company's new twin-turbo 4.0-liter V8 engine. It produces 510 PS (375 kW) and 650 Nm (479 lb-ft) in the AMG GT but this is significantly less than the current model's twin-turbo 5.5-liter V8 that cranks out 557 PS (410 kW) and 720 Nm (531 lb-ft) of torque. This suggests the engine could be upgraded to match or exceed its predecessor but nothing is official as of yet.
