That will only happen in fully autonomous cars. I'd love to know how you think the central dials will be displayed in the HUD without distracting the driver.
The central screen is a distraction for the driver anyway as they have to turn their head from the natural straight ahead view to operate or view the screen.

The central HUD could be displayed on demand (it will only be displayed on the windscreen when the driver or passenger needs to use it) and could operate by gesture or voice control.

Or maybe in future if there is no passenger in the vehicle all the controls for the central display could appear in front of the drivers HUD area. It could be a flexible system and will simplify the interior controls even more.

When HUDs started appearing in cars, I was a big fan. I had it on my E92 M3 and loved it, and used it every time I drove. Fast forward 10 years and it's on my G05 X5. I barely remember even using it. It's activated alright, but I'll get out at the end of a long journey and don't remember "seeing" it. I've just looked right through it. For me the reason is clear. The E92 M3 had a much simpler "two dial" set up with not much extra information displayed. The X5 has the LIVE COCKPIT, and that is so busy with lots of info, and nav instructions etc, that it naturally draws your attention away from the HUD without you realising it.

I think HUD has its place, but to have a "busy" instrument display AND a HUD is overkill, and only one or the other is needed.

Utter nonsense.
The whole windscreen is going to be a gigantic HUD in not too long, which gives plenty of space to put some dials wouldn't you think? Stop thinking so narrow minded please.
And autonomy has nothing to do with AR. In fact, you wouldn't even need AR in an autonomous car, since what would be the point?

Narrow minded ? Clearly your mind is so open that your brain fell out. I get that you think that the whole windscreen is going to be a gigantic HUD, it’s not about a lack of space for dials it’s about the dials covering part of the road which is a huge problem for a car that has a driver, the more info you have on the windshield the less you see of the outside in front of you. In a fully autonomous car, it would make sense to have all kinds of information being displayed.

Also, I didn’t say anything about AR, before going on about how what I’m saying is “utter nonsense” maybe actually read ?

I've got HUD on my C43. Got to say it is not distracting at all. Actually most of the time I don't even notice it and still look down at my dials to see my speed.

I wish there was a way to turn off all the screens in your car if you had an HUD. Only look at that to give you all the info

You can really see the rest of the exterior if you look at the pictures from the salvage / junk yard. You can even see the dash on the driver's side, not much to see. The car in the salvage yard may be an AMG package based on the steering wheel.

The G20 3 Series has an option to make the LIVE COCKPIT "simplified". The X5 doesn't have this (on my software version at least). It's not turning it off but it's at least a start.

I was hoping they were planning on bringing back the S600 with the V12 in the standard body. I have no use for a Maybach.

S600 had a enormous price and was a poor seller
The price in the US was around $160-170K, and some people did buy them. So a buyer may spend $180-190K for a car. Given it is simply an optioned S-Class with items available for the base car why not offer it? I believe you can get almost all if not all of what the S600 has on a S500 except the V12 which I believe will still be available through the Maybach.
