Is it on this summer that we can expect the first batch of FEP photos and new photos of the interior ?

For me a SUV/SAC or whatever, could never be a flagship if the brand has a proper sedan in it's portfolio
Agree, like you can't compare the RR Phantom with the Cullinan either
The S class is still the icon of motion

I'm inclined to agree with you @hannaz
For me a SUV/SAC or whatever, could never be a flagship if the brand has a proper sedan in it's portfolio. A sedan oozes much more finesse and elegance than a SUV ever could. But maybe we're a minority. Could very well be, that the more youthful (under 30 years) are so used to and grown up w...

I'm just under 30. Only people with an expressed interest in cars would say "An SUV can't be the most expensive model in a lineup." No one else really cares.

My request was directed at GCF members as such (= someone with an expressed interest in cars). What do you think @Serpens? Can, or perhaps should, an SUV be the pinnacle, the flagship of the line up at Mercedes-Benz or is it and should it be the S...

The suv cannot offer the sublime ride that an s class can offer with that high central of gravity

I'm well under thirty and I completely agree with you. A luxurious sedan just carries that statesmanlike aura for me which no SUV ever could.
But I think many people of my age would disagree and consider the even bigger presence on the road and that elevated seating position of an SUV as even more luxurious! Also most non car people don't care about the brand heritage at all, they just want imposing looks!
So my perception might just be the same as yours because I'm very familiar with the history of cars and therefore value sedans more.

I get easily sea sick in a SUV. As a passenger in a F15 X5 with M suspension I can resist 15 on a twisty road at the most. On the same road I have no problems in a sedan. I suppose it is a reaction induced by the higher CoG

True the S is the icon in the car industry for now and large sedan/saloon style is still holding its ground. And yes the Cullinan or Bentayga cant be compared with Phantom and Mulsanne but that is due to the ugliness of both SUVs IMO. GLS is the same story, it is just an extended ML up to now and not a true equivalent of the S. The G Wagen, on the other hand, is at the same level in desirability and status as the S in Mercedes current lineup. I have read that the G holds its resale value much better than the S. And I guess the Range Rover is by far the top model for JLR. An attractive and desirable SUV can be equally desirable as the sedan at least in the current environment. Range Rover success is the proof of that.

With the exception of the Range Rover, nothing says flagship to me like a large sedan. I love that my country develops a big beefy Presidential limo on a truck platform but styles it as a sedan. As the Cullinan and Bentayga have proved, presence commonly suffers in the SUV format. A grand sedan does it for me every time.

And that's why I would love for Mercedes to keep a sedan at the top of the product pile.

The G Wagen, on the other hand, is at the same level in desirability and status as the S inMercedes current lineup. I have read that the G holds its resale value much better than the S.

It's important to note that all of the G-wagen cachet (and resale value) is rooted in its anachronism. This is true even with the updated model. They cannot change it to showoff the marque's true technical ability or introduce a new design ethos. For that reason I don't consider it the flagship.

A limousine has always been the vehicle that symbolizes luxury, with its extra length, low sleek roofline and relaxed 1st class seating position with supreme leg space. The S-class has always been the vehicle that projects the luxury symbol of Mercedes Benz and the 3 pointed star in this limousine form. Its deep rooted history will also keep in firmly in place as the flagship car in Mercedes car line up. I don't believe an SUV will fill this position so well as first of all it doesn't possess the same gorgeous proportions and elegance as a saloon and it's high driving and seating position wont give that same feeling of sitting in a 1st class luxurious seat with tons of room.

My perception of an "ideal" flagship would be an automobile relatively closely-based on M-Bs' Concept IAA (2015). The finest 4 door "sedoupe" design exercise by M-B to date, IMHO. Of course, without the exaggerated gaping grill and the odd horizontally-retractable rear airfoil.

This is what the upcoming EQ-S SHOULD be.

Haven't forgotten that one, indeed a nice sedoupe (trademark Jimmy's).
Agree with your last sentence, I could imagine an EQS in this form. But I can't see THE ;) S in this design. I hope the design of the S stays in this beautiful elegant sedan style, like so perfectly executed in form of W126 and W222.
Edit: it looks almost small next to big, tall (> 200 cm) Georg Kacher...

...and that even though Georg Kacher has lost quite an immense amount of weight over the past several years.

Of course, I wholeheartely agree that the S-Class sedans should remain sedans. But with as rakish a greenhouse as possible for a roomy, somewhat upright "traditional, stately" 3-box 4 door sedan. Audi, for example, does this well on its' A6 and A8.

I wonder if the next S class will be the first with level 3?! at least in some areas

From what I understand Audi already had Level 3 capability ready on the A8. Gov't regulations hadn't cleared the way for them to enable it yet though.
