We can probably be quite confident that an A8 successor (should there actually be one) will be a BEV vehicle based on the Porsche/Audi PPE "premium electric modular platform" shared with the 3rd gen Porsche Panamera and perhaps a new line of Bentley BEV cars. But that will be well down the road...2023/24-ish, I would reckon

Hmmmm....i don't know. There might be a BEV option unless Audi is positioning the recently previewed concept car to cover the 4-door sedan as well as 4-door coupe positions. But I reckon there will also be a PHEV for the A8 for those who are still hesitant to jump on the all-electric train. I think the generation after next (2030-ish....yeesh, damn I feel old just thinking about it) will we an all BEV A8 line-up. But that's my guess, so what do I know.

At first I would agree but I’m sure MB will do or already did their homework to make the right decision. Whatever that means: financially, brand wise, product wise, long term strategy, etc.

Since we haven't gotten the SWB version of the S since the W140 in the US, I wonder which engine/trim choice was most popular and if MB thinks other cars in their stable will look more attractive or at least cover their wants/needs, i.e. the CLS, E-class, AMG GT 4-door, upcoming EQ S, etc.

There was actually a SWB W220 S350 for the 2006 model year in the U.S.

I think Germany is probably one of the only markets that sells the SWB version. LWB is now only sold in most other countries.

Yeah, but it was a colossal failure - sales were in the hundreds. Real bad timing by MBUSA as W220 sales were dead at that point and they all came about as loaded as mid-spec E320 of that era.

The S450 is selling very well right now as lease rates are quite attractive compared to the S560.

I'm sure, but that wasn't the point, just that the W140 S320 was not the last SWB S-Class sold in the U.S.

Perhaps the (now broad) X290 AMG GT lineup as well as the C257 CLS series make a W222 SWB successor redundant. Not to mention the upcoming "remotely coupe-ish lounge capsule thingy" EQS.

Neither offers the ultimate ride or refinement of the S. Nor does the E. Unless they have a product that has the space, practicality, refinement, quality, image etc on par with the current SWB then this is a big mistake. Particularly in markets where the S is primarily SWB.

The S is a car that's best enjoyed in the back seat. A four door coupe with a cramped rear seat isn't viable when the S-Coupe exist. The AMG GT4D fills the role of a spirited alternative to the S sedan.
