Mercedes-Benz S-Class (W223) Spy Shots and Info Thread -

Can this really be the early test mules of the next S Class! ??..it almost makes sense if we use the current W222s testing phase model when the first mules appeared 3 years before the 2013 launch back in 2010...

The first test mule for Mercedes-Benz’s next-generation S-Class has been spotted. Test mules represent the first stage of real-world testing for new cars. It’s basically the new mechanical package hidden beneath the makeshift body of an existing car, typically the one the new car is about to replace.

Test mules provide clues on the size and hardpoints of the new car being developed. In the case of the next S-Class, which we’re expecting to arrive in 2020, as a 2021 model, we can see that the general size and proportions will match the current model but there will be a slightly wider track, as evidenced by the wheel arch extensions.

The current Mercedes-Benz S-Class, the W222, was introduced for 2014 and immediately rocketed to the top of the sales chart. The 6-figure sedan racked up more than 100,000 sales in its first year and that was before the arrival of additional body styles such as the 2-door cars and extra-long Maybach and Pullman.

It’s clear the next S-Class has some big shoes to fill. Luckily for it, it will adopt a new platform, in this case Mercedes’ MRA design for rear-wheel-drive cars. The current S-Class rides on an updated version of its predecessor’s architecture.

It’s hard to gauge what Mercedes has in store for its next S-Class this early out. The current model just received its mid-cycle update so understandably Mercedes is shy to talk about the next one. We already know a few things, however. Every powertrain will be electrified, either with mild-hybrid, plug-in hybrid or pure electric technology. It’s not clear if there will be a fuel cell option but Mercedes has demonstrated that it has the technology ready.

There will also be much more advanced self-driving systems, including perhaps a Level 3 system. This is where the car can handle its own in certain situations, leaving the driver free to do other things. Should the driver need to take back control, the car will give warnings well in advance. Audi has already introduced such a system in its latest A8, though its availability will be limited due to a lack of regulations.

We’re expecting Mercedes to offer the next S-Class in multiple body lengths, from a short wheelbase right up to the extra-long Pullman. However, there’s a good chance the S-Class Coupe and Cabriolet are no longer be offered. Don’t be surprised if the void is filled with a Maybach offering.

We should see the first prototypes wearing the actual body of the new S-Class in 2018 or early 2019. Stay tuned for updates as development continues.

Interesting.
I am hoping the next S will follow the slim and trim footprint of the W220 S.
The W222 has a large footprint. It is rather bulky like the W140 S.

Oh boy, get ready for the never ending thread...... It will be at least Spring 2020 before the new S is shown. I hope we're getting a new coupe and cabrio, but usually such rumors are based in truth, so we probably won't. Terrible since they're has always been a big coupe at Mercedes.

Agreed, the good old times of the never ending S Class spy threads..but the excitment and anticipation has now started for the 11th generation of the definitive luxury saloon, I am expecting to see bags and bags of speculation and rumours over the next few years lol..

There will be a 4 door coupe variants in W223 in stead of coupe and convertible, according to some news.

I still certainly appreciate a well taken care of W220 to this day, but I love the bulky look so very much. It has such presence.

Time goes by quickly,I have experienced the birth of W221 and W222 in this forum.now,it's W223.

Same! I was just 15 when the W221 broke cover in here...

How many of us think the Maybach 6 is a rough preview of the next S, particularly the interior?..I for one think that there are definitely some things to be taken away from these concepts..

Wow, it's about that time again. Calling this to be the new longest thread when closed.

The only three details I know that are certain so far are: Maybach 6 heavily influences the front and profile, interior will be very evolutionary & digital door panels (as previewed at IAA)

I am expecting two screens to become one and en entirely new vision for Command. The screen UI in one of the recent concepts is interesting.

Showing speed as a digit instead of an analogue speedometer is less wasteful of digital real estate. Drivers often only need to know how fast they are driving. As for the rev counter, it's redundant in cruisers like the s-class that has a clever gearbox and produce abundant amounts of torque at low RPM thanks to turbocharging or hybrid drivetrain. There is no need to look at the rev counter at all.

The space it occupies can be used for a larger map, contextual information about local amenities or traffic information. With autonomous driving being the next frontier for innovation I am banking on Mercedes taking interior comfort and sense of leasure for the hands off driver to the next level.

^ Agreed, the next S will for sure usher in a new UI format, I am betting on something more in line with the Maybach 6 Cabrio, which mind you, beatifully combines retro analogue instruments with the wrap around screen..
