Ferrari 458 M spied for the first time

Could be introduced at the 2015 Geneva Motor Show

We've been hearing about the Ferrari 458 M for months but here are the first spy photos of the upcoming model.

Caught wearing a 458 Italia body the prototype looks fairly ordinary until you get to the rear end and notice the car has a dual exhaust system instead of the usual centermounted triple exhaust. The system appears to be hastily mounted, so it remains unclear if it will carry over to the production model.

While we can't see too many changes, there should be plenty as previous reports have indicated the car will use a twin-turbo 3.8-liter V8 engine that develops approximately 670 bhp (500 kW). If this number pans out, the car will be 108 bhp (80 kW) more powerful than its predecessor which can accelerate from 0-100 km/h in less than 3.4 seconds and hit a top speed in excess of 325 km/h (202 mph).

Now we're finally going to see who's really the best out of the two (mclaren and ferrari) when they both have turbos. We're finally going to get to see whether or not a ferrari with turbos is also soulless or only the mclaren.

Ferrari has already outlined a new supercar development strategy a few month ago. About four years after every model is launched, they will re-engineer it from the ground up and give it a new identity, just like they did with the California convertible.

The next two cars on Maranello's agenda are the FF and the 458. A quintessential supercar daily driver, the 458 Italia will undergo major changes, which are expected to arrive some time in 2016. Even though it's won the Engine of the Year award on many occasions, the 4.5-liter naturally aspirated V8 is about to be replaced. Combined with a fresh face, this will give Ferrari a sharper blade to cut into McLaren 650S and Lambo Huracan sales.

Just like the California T, the 458 will get a new twin-turbo V8, likely displacing 3.8 liters. The output of this mill will is expected to be 670 horsepower, way more than even the hardcore 458 Speciale and Speciale Aperta. But the really important bit is the increase in torque, which is essential if the 458 is to stop losing drag races to the McLaren 650S.

Design chances are also planned, though Ferrari's employees have been reluctant to reveal details. This next rendering was recently released by Italian magazine Car Passion and has a hint of Lamborghini to it. We're not sure about that distinctive new front bumper that's been borrowed from the F60 America, but the 458 M will most definitely need those massive side air intakes to feed the hungry new engine some extra air.

The 458 M is reportedly going to bow at the 2015 Frankfurt Motor Show or a bit earlier than that. Until then, feast your eyes on this rendering and tell us what you think.

Editor's note: The current crop of Ferraris are the last naturally aspirated, non-hybrid stallions. They will have instant collector status, according to the racing drivers we've spoken to. Still, there's no getting around the fact that they will be considered slow.

We can already see, the California T is with turbos, this is a long way off being Ferrari's first turbo road car, the first was the 208.

So racing drivers now know what's collectable and what isn't, this is news to me.

Leave the 458 alone!

Let it RIP with its magnificent NA V8 and leave the turbo for the replacement.

I guess you don't remember one of THE best driving Ferrari's ever built, the F40 was turbocharged and it had a hugely characterful turbo V8 engine. I think Ferrari won't make a mistake with changing this car to a turbo. Like the BMW M4 it might lose some of the the throttle response and eagerness or rev to the redline with lightning speed but it will give the 650S it's mightiest challenge yet.

RIP in peace!

BTW, the only thing I want for the facelift is a new front bumper design and some seriously updated interior features (like those horrible plastic buttons).
For the rest I don't care as it will be glorious either way.

And once again we are told what we all know: co2 gains by turbo charging (and not told here, automatics) are purely atrificial.
Yes. How long have we been talking about the false economy of turbocharging and its implementation as a means to bypass - as opposed to addressing - fuel efficiency and emissions requirements.

the first rumors are extremely exciting...Some dealers had already a preview ..and rumors are consistent now..

From fchat, the dealer viewing just ended, here's a snippet:

Initial description is the car is an evolution from the current 458. The active aero plays a big role in the car, there are more vents on the side (similar to the mclaren and lambo designs) as well as a redesigned lower lip that is angular like a huracan and the front bonnet is completely different with air intakes. IT has a new side slip traction technology improved as well as an 80hp increase in power out put.

Interior changes are similar to f12 and passenger display is now available.

Maybe this was all discussed in this forum before, but I hope this info helps those who are keenly waiting. Car first impressions are that it looks great.

Hope this helps! we will find out next week in pics!

Here's some more based on the naming:

modificato is the internal name in the factory…apparently they will give it a new name…….but ya never know!

Sorry to hijack the thread, but I had to post this. I saw it on rennteam and its a rumor about the f12 "gto" variant:

It's coming...... with a startling power output and some trick tech.

I do have figures for the current approximate weight loss and the power output but cannot post them I'm afraid. The car is still very much a work in progress so spec's are not finalised and it may even be held back until closer the end of the F12s current life cycle. This would make room to bring out an HGTE style version before it as happened with the 599.

Sounds like one of the most significant facelifts ever on a Ferrari? Like almost a new car.
