X6 Spy pics: BMW X6 Sports Activity Coupe

The BMW X6 is a mid-size luxury crossover SUV by German automaker BMW. The BMW X6 is the originator of the sports activity coupé (SAC), referencing its sloping rear roof design. It combines the attributes of an SUV (high ground clearance, all-wheel drive and all-weather ability, large wheels and tires) with the stance of a coupé (styling featuring a sloping roof).

That's one of the sketches for the Z8 predecessor released earlier this year at the Jan. L.A. auto show. Damm does that look nice!!! The twin shell kidney grill will be a much welcome change, adds depth to the "face" of the car.

Any updates on the proposed sketches(including the one pictured in my quote) Eni??? I wonder if that's not the beginning of development for the Z6???

The final design hasn't been chosen yet. The car is still in the very early phase of development.

I'll try to get more info in the next days and let you know - in an appropriate thread. :usa7uh:

To Tycoon: No problem. :t-cheers:

Yeah they are foglights, and they are different from the ones in the X5

Just to show you how low the roof line goes at the back ... :usa7uh:

Sports Activity Coupe

An AWD M vehicle doesn't really fit the M idiom. But hell, Ferrari is building an AWD sportscar...

The proposition of an X6 coupe fullfills the AWD potential of the M-brand furthermore than the X5 could - X5 as M does not fullfill the criteria expected for M. BMW -M always have insisted that the four wheel drive vehicle that would inherit M-badging would be a vehicle that inherits the key criteria of the brand - performance, weight and superior dynamics and incase of the X6 a dynamic looking sportbased coupe will appeal to the M ideals of representation than a full size SUV like the X5.

Of course the ideas that concern the M-version are just that at the moment with the actual X6 launching in mid-late 2008 an M-variant would not see introduction till at least late 2009 or early 2010 probably using the next incarnation of BMW's V10 with a higher output than today's V10 which will also arrive in the next generation of M5 and M6.

BMW is making preparations at its Spartanburg, South Carolina plant to build as many as 40,000 X6 crossovers a year, according to a BMW source contacted by Automotive News. The crossover coupe is expected to cost around $50,000, and target the Mercedes R-Class and Infiniti FX.

Deliveries of the new model are expected to begin next year, according to the report. Although recent reports have indicated the X6 is two years away from production, the supplier sources cited by Auto News are likely well informed.

BMW currently uses the South Carolina plant to build the new X5 SUV and Z4 roadster. BMW already has begun hiring at the plant, and at least four job fairs are planned in the area. BMW supplier Faurecia is working "around the clock" to bid on work for the X6. [Illustration source: AutoWeb].

Since BMW hasn't even released a concept of their Merc R-class fighter, the X6, it struck us as odd that they would already be looking into production capacity. According to Automotive News, they're doing just that and looking to utilize their assembly lines in South Carolina to build approximately 40,000 of the yet-to-be-shown crossover.

The plant in Spartanburg, S.C. currently has the ability to produce both the X5 SUV (sorry, SAV) and the Z4 roadster, but when BMW consolidated the two lines last year, they had every intention of using the plant to produce another Ultimate Driving Machine. Not only that, but they've turned up the wick on hiring, with four job fairs planted in the coming months.

Since the plant is running under its current capacity, the Spartanburg center would seem to be the ideal place for BMW to produce a crossover within the same country where sales will likely be highest.

Since BMW hasn't even released a concept of their Merc R-class fighter, the X6,
I'm sorry to correct you, but, the X6 isn't the R-Class fighter. That would be the RFK. When hitting the market, the X6 is a stand alone concept that probably will be copied by the competitors. 4WD, big engines, coupeish roofline, low center of gravitiy: a beast on the road (when needed) but combined with the SUV/SAV advantages to make it a perfect daily driver as well.

Huckfeldt's X4 impression:

Actually X4 development just commenced, so the final design is not known yet - and won't be for further few years.

But ...

The general appearance of side profile of Huckfeldt's "X4" is actually very similar to X6.

Details are off. Greenhouse will be different on X6 (eg. extra side window). Side creases are positioned wrongly. Rear light shape is off.

But to get the right idea of X6's silhouette - the above posted pic is a good example.
