Fortwo/Forfour Spied! smart ForTwo spy photos

The Smart Fortwo (stylized as "smart fortwo") is a two-seater city car manufactured and marketed by the Smart division of the Mercedes-Benz Group for model years 1998–2024, across three generations - each using a rear-engine, rear-wheel-drive layout and a one-box design. The Smart Forfour (stylized as "smart forfour") is a city car (A-segment) marketed by Smart over two generations. The first generation was marketed in Europe from 2004 to 2006 with a front-engine configuration, sharing its platform with the Mitsubishi Colt.

In addition to the recent ForFour spy pics, here are also some photos showing a mule for the next generation Smart ForTwo that will be built in co-operation with Renault and therefor spawn a Renault version. Expect a range of petrol and diesel engines as well as a fully electric version when the new Smart ForTwo hits the market in 2014.
There have been rumors saying that Renault has dropped the interest in the co-operation but this mule was seen driving together with a French plated Smart ForFour mule and a French plated Dacia Duster as security car indicating that Renault could very well still be on this project.

As this is just an early chassis mule with nothing in common regarding the design we see here, the production cars will however borrow a lot of the design seen at the Smart Forstars concept revealed at the Paris Car Show.

2016 Smart ForTwo Cabrio spied undisguised
Features electrically-operated folding canvas top
An undisguised prototype of the 2016 Smart ForTwo Cabrio has been spotted undergoing final testing in Stuttgart.

As expected, it looks virtually the same as its fixed roof sibling with the exception of the electrically-operated folding canvas top carried over from its predecessor, just like the manually removable side bars.

Daimler-owned Smart has already announced the ForTwo Cabrio will be out later this year with the same naturally aspirated 1.0-liter engine developing 60 HP (45 kW) and 71 HP (52 kW) along with a beefier 0.9-liter turbo rated at 90 HP (66 kW). A five-speed manual transmission will be standard, but at an additional cost you will be able to order an optional dual-clutch six-speed gearbox.

A Brabus-prepared version of the ForTwo is in the works and chances are it will also be available as a Cabrio with an uprated version of the 0.9-liter turbo likely pushing out around 120 HP (88 kW).

Smart will bring the US-spec 2016 ForTwo to this week's New York Auto Show and they could decide to unveil the Cabrio as well. If that won't happen, a September debut at the Frankfurt Motor Show is very probable.

Smart ForTwo Cabrio gets caught in the rain
The 2016 Smart ForTwo Cabrio has been spied virtually undisguised.

Caught with only a few pieces of tape covering the Smart logos, the ForTwo Cabrio follows in the footsteps of the standard ForTwo but adopts a retractable cloth roof. Additional changes are limited but we can expect a slightly revised interior with new controls for the roof.

Engine options will carryover from the standard model so expect a variety of options including a naturally aspirated 1.0-liter unit with 71 PS (52 kW) and 91 Nm (67 lb-ft) of torque as well as a turbocharged 0.9-liter engine that develops 90 PS (66 kW) and 135 Nm (99 lb-ft) of torque.

Likely debuting at IAA in September
A camo-free prototype of the 2015 Smart ForTwo Cabrio has been caught on camera with the top down.

The last time our spy photographers spotted the new ForTwo Cabrio it was on a rainy day, but now the test driver had the possibility of taking down the soft top as it was a beautiful sunny day. Smart has decided to remove the camouflage altogether because it was basically useless taking into account we all know that aside from the top, there won't be any major design changes compared to the fixed roof sibling. We can't really tell from these images, but the authors of the pics say the roll bar is a bit beefier compared to the outgoing model.

There won't be any surprises in terms of engines as the 2015 Smart ForTwo Cabrio will get the same three-cylinder 0.9-liter turbo with 90 PS (66 kW) along with a lesser 1.0-liter normally aspirated motor with 60 PS (45 kW) and 71 PS (52 kW).

Expect an official reveal in September at the Frankfurt Motor Show, with sales commencing shortly thereafter.
