Might be news to you, but E63 doesn't have a NA engine any more. It has a 5.5l bi turbo V8 that only revs to 6000 rpm. For that matter, the new M5 engine actually revs as much as the old AMG 6.3l NA engine. In fact, I think with the exception of M838T in McLaren MP4 12C, the new M5 engine is probably the highest revving turbo engine.

Not sure about the highest revving since most of the turbo cars these days redline at 6800 - 7000 rpm much like the M5. It is pretty standard for nearly all the turbo cars.

But, if truly the 6.2 Liter V8 is not being used in the E63 then my comparison must be disregarded.

It still exist but only with 525hp and is disappearing since E63 is also available with turbo and 552 hp. It wont be available for long in the E63.

PS M5 reevs up to 7200 rpm just as much as the 6-2 liters N/a engine from Mercedes.

Your vote goes to M5?

S63 in M5 guise revs to 7200 rpm. But importantly unlike most other turbo engine (including BMW's own N54 in 1M) it actually maintains the peak power all the way to the redline.

Hah i hate the damn rev talk ..
**** the revs..i hate cars that rev high.. unless they are real sports cars..
I do not like the sounds of a stressed engine..and having to stress it up to 7000rpm or to get the best out of it..
I like effortless low down power..
No wonder people hate buying used BMW´s.. ppl just rev the **** out of them..

I really hate the way..its assumed here on the board that the higher it revs the better it is..
Go buy that Hyabusa Engined Smart then..it revs to 20K or something.. Rev all to you fall ..

AMG will never make as high reving engines..even though they could.. its not the way a MB is supposed to be driven..
Even when they made the NA 63 engine which revs high for a AMG..there was complaints.. and its big stroke engine with huge torque for a NA and low down power..

Just because its more fit to the BMW way..does it make it better?

Hell NO!!!

For pure super-sport sedan credentials and intentions based on looks the M5's styling is the purist.

AMG Benz'es can look 'overdone' and sometimes bling for a brand that does 'classy', yet the E63's rear view is very neat and wins from these photo's - for front, side and brutality without the bling the M5 delivers the 'eye candy';)

You should love the diesels then.

^I adore diesels.. On my drive 5 mins ago with my BMW 520 (which i hate btw due to the stress full engine..) i was thinking which bmw i would be able to live with..and remembered this 335d coupe i drove once..it was amazing fun..and laid back at the same time.. much more plesant experience than the E46 M3 i drove on regular basis..

High revs = Mechanical Stress= Psychological Stress on me as a driver.. It feels like im being unfair to my car:)

But with that said.. i belive this M5 caters to both mentalitys..it has a wider power band due to the turbos.. and you get alot of umpf down low..
Where as in the M5 V10 you had to rev it to get the best out of it..

I wish i could drive this new M5..but im probably not alone in wishing that..haha

I think it will have a very diffrent charechter compared to previous M cars..
Much more to my liking..

I allready love the sound it makes.. also much less mechanical..and more powerfull.. :)

Ah, that is where you are mistaken, a good high revving engine just doesn't have a high redline, it loves to be revved and is buttery smooth all the way. Even the pseudo-M S52B32US in my M3 which redlines at just 6500, loves to swing for the fence at every given opportunity. Compare that to my (ex) Jetta which also had 6k or so redline, but the whole engine felt like it was going to shake itself apart after 4000. Hopefully the M5 unit has the same gumption for revs.

Yep your right some engines are happier to rev ..the M3 i drove was happy to rev.. and felt solid all the way through..but still it something about reving that high in a luxury car that makes me cringe..

Non M BMW engines has this style to..high rev and delivery late in the rpm band..but there its not as fun as with M engines..
Especially the 16,18 and 20s..its painfull to be honest.. much rather have a diesel in those classes..

Sunny doesn't even know what 16, 18 and 20s are, as they aren't being sold in the US :p

And a 320i painful? Hahahaha, sure!! You solely drive Ferraris and Aston Martins or something?

It'll be interesting hearing those two Turbo V8s together..;)

Going to sound like two people with stomach problems. Screaming engines are so much better and with more unique sound. Muscle cars sound havent been my favorite engine sound.

^^ But that's inside...... not completely fair. I'm of course not saying that the sound isn't really nice...

Both these cars hold their own unique candle. I`ll have to vote for the E63 here. The new M5 is bland in come colors. (the E seems to hold more colors better)
Also, the interior of the E63 has more attention to detail! The M5s interior is really dull in comparison. (For example it`s steering wheel gives me that 1990s impression.)

The Mercedes actually look more "in your face aggressive" than the BMW.

Did u hear that engine in the CLS?..sounds just like the "old" 6.2L NA engine..impressive.
