Return of the King? Maybach Coupé

^ Yes, it's supposed to incorporate some of those Concept IAA design elements. :)

The Vision Maybach 6 has been styled at Mercedes’ main studio in Stuttgart under the company’s head of design, Gorden Wagener. It reinterprets many classic Maybach design themes while incorporating elements of the brand’s latest design lineage, as first previewed on the IAA (Intelligent Aerodynamic Automobile) at last year’s Frankfurt motor show.

The Vision Maybach 6’s striking chrome grille is modelled on past Maybach models and features 25 vertical struts that Mercedes describes as “a display of precision assembly”. The grille is set to appear on future Maybach models in a bid to further distinguish them from their Mercedes siblings. On the Vision Maybach 6, it is incorporated into a large front bumper that also houses distinctive thin-lined LED headlights and a heavily contoured lower section with blade-like air ducts that feed cooling air to the front brakes.

The long bonnet features Mercedes-Benz’s traditional three-pointed star emblem and the concept also has gullwing doors, hinging upwards from the roof, to provide easy access to the interior.

At the rear is a boat-tail design, similar to that of the Mercedes IAA concept. It aims to provide the coupé with excellent aerodynamic properties without the need for an additional spoiler.

Don't wanna ruin the party, the Maybach Concept looks fantastic. But (and this is a serious question): how could a car that is 5.5m long, 1.33m high, and probably 2m wide not look impressive and imposing?

Perhaps "impressive and imposing" was easy, but "elegant" may have been difficult? :)

"It was not easy to make such a huge car elegant," says Exterior Designer Stefan Lamm. But it was successful. translated from Autobild

I reckon in the flesh this car will have a much more positive effect and impact due to its size and sleekness, which dont get fully shown in photos.

That long bonnet is so imposing, imagine the view from the drivers seat!

Every August classic car fans from around the world converge on Pebble Beach in California for a very special beauty contest. This gathering of magnificent classic cars is the perfect place to premiere the exclusive Vision Mercedes-Maybach 6, a sensational luxury-class coupé. The 2+2 seater is a homage to the glorious age of the aero coupés and consciously carries this tradition forward into the future.

The coupé reinterprets classic, emotional design principles in an extreme way, following the Mercedes-Benz design philosophy of sensual purity.

Clearly defined contours and organically formed wings stand in contrast to the sharply drawn, extended feature line on each side which defines the upper vehicle body from the radiator grille across the entire length of the vehicle to the rear. There is also a striking contrast between the Maybach red paintwork and the chrome strips which sit above the wheel arches and in the centre of the bonnet and boot lid. A reinterpretation of the Mercedes-Maybach radiator grille with its fine, vertical struts accentuates the front end. The extended, round “boat tail” format of the Vision Mercedes-Maybach 6’s rear recalls a luxury yacht.

“Our glamorous coupé, the Vision Mercedes-Maybach 6, represents the ultimate in contemporary luxury. It is hot and cool”, states Gorden Wagener, Head of Design at Daimler AG. “With its intelligent appeal and reduced, technoid look, it perfectly embodies our design philosophy of sensual purity and our pursuit of aerodynamic efficiency.”

With its sensual, emotional design (“hot”) and intelligent details (“cool”), the Vision Mercedes-Maybach 6 represents the ultimate in luxury. The classic aesthetic proportions of the show car – the extremely long bonnet, the low roof line and the rearward positioning of the greenhouse – recall the aero coupés of days gone by. But this is not retro design – this is a reinterpretation of classic, aesthetic principles.

The front windscreen serves as a transparent display: driving-related data and geographical information is shown across its full width, augmenting the outside world with additional information. This information can be controlled and adjusted by the occupants using gestures. The dashboard wing curves across the door trim into the seat landscape, creating a 360° lounge.

Mercedes-Maybach gave us a sneak preview of the incredible all-electric 738-horsepower Vision Mercedes-Maybach 6 coupe concept at Monterey Car Week, and it's a beauty.

Although they were stingy with images of the actual car, we rounded up some photos of the electric-powered concept in the metal, rather than the widely-revealed computer renderings you might have seen elsewhere.

The Vision 6 has got impressive power, vaulting from 6 to 62 mph in less than 4.0 seconds (that's a 0-60 time of 3.9 seconds or better) and to a limited top speed of 155 mph.

A direct current fast-charge system can theoretically re-power the battery pack for 62 miles more driving range in just five minutes, as long as you can find one of the mythical DC quick chargers.

Visible details of the concept include the use of Mercedes now-signature gullwing doors, plus the inclusion of other Pebble Beach-worthy styling cues, such as the '63 'Vette's split rear window and the '36 Auburn Speedster's boat tail trunk.

On the dashboard, the Vision Mercedes-Maybach 6 (can we come up with a shortened nickname for this thing?) goes retro, with "hyper-analogue" instruments that have needles and circular, crystal-look displays.

They're backed up by a head-up display on the windshield that projects driving-related data and geographical information across its full width, providing augmented reality.

These scan the passengers and monitor, for example, their vital functions. As a result, comfort features such as seat climate or the massage function, for example, can be activated or the seat settings adjusted to the passenger.

I was recently and will be going back to Woking for a follow-up meeting with colleagues but they have a Martian Tripod in the city. Because Woking is where HG Wells was born.
