Return of the King? Maybach Coupé

Vision Mercedes-Maybach 6 concept exudes timeless opulence

Four electric motors and an 80-kilowatt-hour battery offer power and range to match the beautiful look.

Debuting during Monterey Car Week, the Vision Mercedes-Maybach 6 concept takes clear inspiration from streamlined exterior designs from the 1930s, like on pre-war Bugattis and Talbot-Lagos. The classic look should fit in perfectly with the many classic vehicles on hand for the Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance.

The Vision 6 looks best in profile, where you can admire its flowing lines and see the coupe’s immense size. Chrome strips also accentuate the curvaceous body. The gullwing doors are a fantastic reference to Mercedes’ past, too. A massive chrome grille with vertical slats dominates the front end, and just a narrow line of LEDs flank each side. At the rear, there are two, tiny split windows with a small fin between them, and the designers beautifully sculpt the tail and diffuser into a sophisticated curve.

The Vision 6’s gargantuan footprint is very imposing, and we’d love to see how it looks in a darker color. Measuring 222 inches (5.6 meters) long, the vehicle is about an inch larger than a Rolls-Royce Phantom Coupe. The Maybach appears even bigger, though, because being just 52.3 inches (1,328 millimeters) tall accentuates the flowing lines across the body. For reference, a Phantom Coupe has a height of 62.9 inches (1,598 mm).

Maybach's designers used similar proportions with a long nose and rear-biased cabin on the Exelero in 2004. However, they trade the earlier coupe's sharper edges for more graceful curves on this concept.

Inside, Maybach eschews the exterior’s classic inspiration for something more futuristic. The Vision 6 is technically a 2+2, but the occupants in front have things the best. They sit in deeply sculpted seats and look out through an augmented reality windshield. The materials are top class, too, including rose gold trim and elm floors.

The concept’s powertrain shows Maybach’s eye to what’s next because the Vision 6 uses four electric motors for a total system output of 738 horsepower (550 kilowatts). This all-wheel-drive powertrain could get the coupe to 62 miles per hour (100 kilometers per hour) in less than four seconds. An 80 kilowatt-hour battery under the floor would allow for over a range over 200-miles (322-kilometer) in the Environmental Protection Agency’s test or over 500 km (311 miles) with the New European Driving Cycle evaluation.

Motor1 has a team attending Monterey Car Week, so look for complete coverage of the many automotive events there. We should have more photos of the Vision 6 soon, too.

I don't like the dashboard and the instrument cluster, I know it pays tribute to the old S Class of the 1960's, but it just doesn't look modern or unique. If anything, the double circular dials look old and outdated.

Just a wild guess, perhaps this concept is show casing the front end styling of the next S class? The external LED lighting on the side skirt is nicely done.

I can see the grille and front bumper will make it for the next S-Class. I'm pretty sure they've already started the design of it by now.

They better give it that steering wheel too :D

Would love to see real life photos from the instrument cluster, has anybody seen those?
I'm more curious about the new COMAND screen on the windshield. M-B has been toying with the idea in a couple concept cars now. Maybe they're waiting to see how BMW will do with gesture control and implement their own.

It's very dynamic and exciting. I love the chrome strip running the full length of the vehicle. The rear is particularly stunning.

I have to be honest and say that if I didn't know it was a Mercedes, I would assume it was an American car. Maybe it's the Buick grille ...or the longest bonnet/hood since the Dodge Viper.

Anyway, it is undeniably good-looking and makes me positive about the styling-direction of future Mercedes products.

This concept came off the left field and has me excited as much as anything I have seen. Mercedes has clearly learned the mistake with the first "reborn" Maybach and now wants to do in effect an opposite strategy: a derivative brand for a decidedly non-derivative car. I think this is a great start to the new Mercedes-Maybach, a line to rival Rolls Royce and Bugatti.

I want to see:
- this coupe, as the "GT" of the Mercedes-Maybach
- a 4-door coupe as the "GT4"
- and a bonkers sedan line.

Engines will most likely be electrified new generation V12s with some 800 horsepower, but all-electric could be made for uber-exclusive models.

This Vision is absolutely the direction the company should, and apparently is, heading in.

While I found this car very pretty, I was keep thinking that something is not right on the exterior. Something was out of line, and uncharacteristic of Mercedes. I realized that the hood ornament of the three pointed stat is out of place with a non Mercedes traditional grill. Dalimler also posses the next best hood ornament design in the automotive world IMO, the beautiful Maybach double MM that should have been upfront rather than on the sides.

I honestly don't think that a "regular" S-Class will get the new Maybach grille. This'll be a design feature for possible future stand-alone Maybach models and S-Class models will stick to the traditional Merc front fascia (which is the right way to differentiate Maybach from Mercedes models). If Daimler is building a new Maybach based on the next Generation S-Class with a more distinguished exterior design than the current S550/600 Maybach range than the Maybach grille would be a good choice.
The future Maybach range could include "Maybach light" models like "S-Class Maybach" and "GLS-Class Maybach" (like what AMG is doing with their 43 models) and stand alone cars like for example a Limousine or Coupe. I'm not so sure what I shall think about a possible second attempt from MB to compete against the future Phantom and Mulsanne...if they do so then consequently with a unique interior and exterior design which the last "real" Maybach lacked.

I think the introduction of gesture control in the G11/12 was a brave step by BMW and they have my full respect for that even if the usage of the gesture control is limited in the actual system, it's only the first step in the development like the first iDrive was. We can surely expect a system like the one in the Vision MM6 in the future 223.

I have a strong suspicion that the muscular yet smooth flank design is a precursor of what will be applied to more pedestrian M-B offerings within the course of the next 3-4 years. Perhaps beginning with the W222s' successor.

I hope this is the future face of the big benzes. It looks 100 times better than the BMW VFL from 2014 and its pig face.

I took my old man's S500 to the dealer for some minor works this morning and I sat in the display S500 Maybach for a good 10 minutes and I have to say the Maybach is what it is - a LWB S Class - and there are still many plastic bits (the vanity mirror for the rear passengers, the LED lights on top of the rear seats, the air-con vents on the B-pillars) that needs to be improved upon if the next Maybach is to become a true RR and Bentley competitor.

The price of the S500 Maybach has come down by about 10% in Hong Kong due to the lower Euro.

Finally there is no this stupid huge headlamps:mad: like on all Mercedes and new BMW (x5, new 7, future 5:banghead:) and front remind me some Larson render,
we definitely see something similar in w223;)

how much are the s500 and s500 maybach going for in HK currently?

Mercedes-Maybach

In November 2014, Daimler announced the revival of the Maybach name as a sub-brand of the Mercedes-Benz S-Class (W222), positioned as an upscale version akin to the more sporty Mercedes-AMG sub-brand.
