I’m smitten with it’s side profile.

I think that split character line is a gimmick. Which is pretty much the only new thing as it's 'MB design 101' for the rest. Seen this for two decades like this.
Not bad but so boring. But then again, there's only so much you can play with on a sedan like this.

Not for two decades, but the basis of that side profile was laid, with the W222 in 2013, swiftly followed by the W213. Those two already had this sleek, cab backward side profile design. It looks like this new E has it’s cabin even even further back, thus showing a long hood and a relative short boot.

Please...Please...Please be an option and not standard...such a gimmick...BMW is doing this to all of their future kidney grills as well.

Side note, I wonder if the reworked version of the M256 will be hand built in Affalterbach or built alongside the regular M256 in Badd Canstatt like the current versions today

The thing about the illuminated contour in the new E -class is surely false, in the BMW it makes sense since the two kidneys are contourable which makes them even more recognizable, but the Mercedes grills are more what is "inside"; their contour is only geometry

This wouldn't be so bad if the black parts were metal painted in metallic black. Unfortunately it is probably cheap black plastic instead.
