2024 Mercedes-AMG E63 To Get More Power From A Hybrid Inline-Six
The new powertrain features an electric-only mode and is expected to produce more than 700 horsepower.

Long known for its powerful V8 engines, the next Mercedes-AMG E63 will feature a new inline-six with a plug-in hybrid drivetrain. The new drivetrain combines Mercedes-Benz's M256 turbocharged 3.0-liter six-cylinder with an electric motor providing greater power and a limited electric-only range.

Expected to launch in 2024, the new E63 uses a similar hybrid arrangement to the Mercedes-AMG GT 63 S E Performance 4-Door Coupé and Mercedes-AMG C63 S E Performance. Mercedes-AMG has not provided official numbers on the new drivetrain but expects in the range of 700 horsepower and 880 lb-feet of torque. That would be a significant bump compared to the current twin-turbocharged 4.0-liter V8, which develops 604 horsepower and 626 lb-feet of torque.
In addition to the inline-six, the hybrid powertrain will use a 201-horsepower asynchronous motor and a 400-volt, 4.8kWh battery mounted under the trunk. Output from the electric motor is sent to the rear wheels via a two-speed gearbox and an electronically controlled limited-slip differential. Meanwhile, the inline-six uses a nine-speed Speedshift MCT gearbox to direct power to both the front and rear wheels. As with other Mercedes-AMG PHEV models, the new E63 gets seven different driving modes, including Electric, Comfort, Battery Hold, Sport, Sport+, Slippery, and Individual.

Even though the new PHEV system is designed for performance over efficiency, it includes an electric-only mode that should offer a range of up to eight miles. The setup is similar to the C63 and AMG GT, and with it, the new E63 is expected to best the current E63's performance numbers which include a 3.0 second 0 to 60 mph time and a top speed of 186 mph.

In addition to the new E63, AMG plans a successor model to the current E53, using a milder version of the E63's powertrain that includes a gearbox-mounted electric motor. Not to be outdone, the E-Class is rumored to also receive a version of the M256 inline-six. This variant is said to be a heavily reworked version of the 3.0-liter turbocharged engine that will pair with an electric motor on the rear axle.

This render looks very accurate. It has the correct headlights.

I knew they would f#ck the E63 up as well. f#cking knew it.

An inline six cylinder hybrid is definitely a unique architecture. It's reported to have a huge torque increase which will benefit or should low speed driving and aid high speed spirited driving.

But yes I'm shocked by that atleast it's not the four cylinder.🙂

AMG will have to give the M256 the full treatment to handle that sort of power and most likely a new code name.
New cylinder block, pistons, and probably the electric turbo from the C63 E-Performance. With the P3 system, the total output should be well north of 700ps.
It will be heavier than the new C63 (which is already north of 2000kg)

It won't be nowhere near as good as the next M5, which will absolutely trounce this Greta-Doomsberg-friendly new E63 without even trying hard. M5 will trounce it, probably in comfort mode.

I was thinking precisely about the key difference, which is that the M5 comes with a V8 hybrid and if that doesn't penalize it in terms of weight against the E63, although BMW does magic with the mastodons in its line...

I don't know too much about the BMW's. Usually it's more Mercedes and Porsche but I'm assuming V8 hybrid? Rightly or wrongly.

Interesting it's always a battle between them!🙂

Certainly going to be interesting having an inline 6 in the E63. It should have at least 750PS to match the next M5.

I suspect MB to have more power than BMW, as they usually do. Then again, the BMW will have a V8 vs the I6 in the E63, so it should be close.

Damn so the V8 is gone in the C63 and now the E63 ? How are BMW able to keep the I6 in the M3 and the V8 in the M5? Technology or are the vans ,buses and trucks hurting MBs C02 fleet reductions, suspect it’s the latter.

Not the biggest fan of MB but I’m sad to see the V8 gone in these two, they were very characterful engines that sounded amazing and why I’d imagine many chose the E63/C63 over the M5/M3.

It make sense because the E is right in the middle. To get an AMG V8 on the car side you have to go to the upper level cars - AMG GT 4-door, S/SL so the E should get an I6 IMO, not that 4-cylinder mess. It's the CLE that I think will be stuck with the 4-cylinder.

I wish I could bet you some money, because I'm fairly sure the V8 Hybrid AWD M5 will still be lighter than the Greta-Doomsberg-Friendly E63. But sadly I live in South America, so I can't bet nothing with you. Sorry. :(:icon_redf

Don't worry about it I read about an EV BMW M5 years ago so so I guess anything can happen!
