That it will scratch, or even surpass the 5 meter mark, is what I'm thinking too, There's plenty of room.
The current 5er measures 4,96 and the former 7er measured 5,098 (LWB 5,26). The size difference between 5 er and 7er LWB is circa 30 centimeter. The current 7er is 5,39 so the 5er could be up to 5,09 to keep the same difference in size as before.
That would make sense for the Chinese market also, just upsize to 5.09m and don't have a LWB version of 5-series as it is already on the same size as previous 7-series. The wheelbase could stretch to 3.05m, so this could be a big and spacious car for the medium class.

It’s still a little chunky looking in the body but the M5 is shaping up nicely.

To me, it looks like it's pulling all of the worst design cues it can from BMW at the moment. The 5-series shouldn't become the mathematical average styling, or the vanilla of the range. It needs it's own identity, but I'm not seeing that so far. I hope I'm wrong.

The center console design doesn't look really great in my opinion, BMW are following the same route as Mercedes in using shiny black piano plastic for the center consoles and switches. Some cost cutting going on.

The 5-series now has a black shiny plastic switch to open the central split storage compartment and the hard switches are being replaced by a black capacitive BS panel. Gearknob replaced by stubby control selector similar to the Porsche and VW items.

I-drive controller looks like a slim hockey puck.

Really sad there is not real gear for an M car

I know what you mean by that. For now, I can imagine that it'll be a proportionate, stylish thing. The identity part comes with the finder details.

That’s an interesting way to look at what we’ve seen so far. Haven’t thought of it that way. In retrospect the 5er F10 comes to mind, which in my opinion was a bit the vanilla of the range in that era and in that way, yes, one could say, missing it’s own identity. Still, it didn’t look bad, rather attractive even. I’d like to immediately add, the average styling back then, was better than what it occurs to be now.

My hopes are high for this car. What about a nice 540 I6, not too expressive styled but with still some elegant, limousine like lines, not too fat (here’s looking at you 7er), comfortable drive and hopefully airsuspension, not as many visible and noticable cost cutting as some peers do, an interior that can be speced like a 7er and I’d say: time for change.

That kind in the outer part of the headlights is definitively a nod to the E60.
