SL-Class [Renders] 2021 Mercedes-Benz SL

The Mercedes-Benz SL-Class (marketed as Mercedes-AMG SL since 2022) is a grand touring sports car manufactured by Mercedes-Benz since 1954. The designation "SL" derives from the German term "Sport-Leicht", which translates to "Sport Light" in English.

Can anyone translate the most important parts?

...The SLC roadster will not have a successor (not financially viable)...the predicted return of a canvas top on the SL successor will probably not materialize and the retractable hardtop will remain (traditional SL customers being partial to the "coupe/roadster in one" configuration)...the SL successor possibly being offered in "2+2" form as well (think R107 SLC and the possibilty of the current C217 series not having a successor).

Even though I wasn't a fan of this last SLK/SLC, I find this really sad. Glad that the SL will keep a hard folding top, it's a nice differentiation.

^ The article also claims a successor of the SLK/SLC roadster might be based on a sporty version of the C cabrio, instead? :)

They may discontinue SLC - but they won't leave the market to TT and Z4's successor.

Perhaps there will be an A Class based Coupe/Cabrio instead of SLC?

Anyway, I completely agree with Luke - so sad SLC will be gone, and so nice that SL will retain it's hard folding top.

If Mercedes scrap the SLC they should bring out a cheaper sportier roadster to rival the MX5, that would revive the market for sure.

I completely agree with Luke. The last and current SLC is very classic and sad. In this generation lost all sporty design. But I'm sure that Mercedes is not going to leave alone to the new Z5. More yet, recently Mercedes has divided the platforms with MFA2, MRA, MHA and MSA and if the next generation from SL will use this last platform MSA, would be very difficult to amortize this platform. How many years they would need to do? Many, many, many. Or they'd lose a lot of money.

I think that Mercedes is waiting to the BMW's movements with its strategy of new models. MSA is a modular platform; So, I understand that they can build roadster from C-Segment to E-Segment, using the same platform and I'd not be surprised if Mercedes decides to build one SLA with rear-wheel drive.

Maybe the new Mercedes's strategy is to develop three roadster: SLA, more compact covering the C-segment and the current SLC and one new SLC positioned between C-Class and E-Class covering these models.

Due to ride on what Mercedes-Benz calls the Modular Sports car Architecture (MSA), the next-generation SL-Class will find itself between a rock and a hard place. That’s because the advent of the GT 2-seater and S-Class Cabriolet have made it harder for the current-generation SL-Class to fit in with the rest of the lineup.

In production since 2012 and updated for the 2017 model year, the R231-generation SL-Class is, arguably, a bit of a flop. The upcoming model, however, is expected to wash away the sins of its not-that-sporty-nor-lightweight predecessor. Purportedly codenamed R232, a new report on the next SL-Class states that 2+2 seating is a possibility worthy of consideration.

Here’s the tell-tale passage from Auto Bild: “you don’t need much imagination to imagine the new SL as a 2+2-seater.” The phrasing is, without a shadow of a doubt, the making of someone gifted with a wild imagination. The German publication suggests that the 2+2 seating configuration would be welcome as a means to make the SL more distinctive in the brand’s open-top lineup.

The thing is, a 4-seater SL-Class would then cannibalize the S-Class Cabriolet. It’s rather clear, then, that the possibility for the SL to go 4+4 is low. Yet another argument toward the SL retaining its 2-seater layout comes in the form of spy pics of the all-new model, hiding as a shrunken S63 Coupe. Mercedes-AMG, the skunkworks behind the awe-inspiring GT, is said to be behind the development of the next SL in terms of chassis development.

In this regard, hearsay suggests that the upcoming MSA platform (Modulare Sportwagen Architektur) will act as the basis for the SL, GT, and SLC. For the full-blooded SL63, the next-gen model will most likely adopt the 4.0-liter biturbo V8 from the W213 E63, along with the 4Matic+ all-wheel-drive system. Whatever the future holds, the only solid information we have on the 2019 Mercedes-Benz SL is a batch of spy photos portraying a test mule

2019 Mercedes-Benz SL Rumored to Go 2+2

Fresh reports claim that the next-generation Mercedes-Benz SL will share its underpinnings with the AMG GT in an attempt to increase the sporty prowess of the brand's most famous convertible.
Autocar reports that Mercedes-Benz's performance division, AMG, has been given the reigns for the engineering development of the new SL and has been working on the model alongside the recently-revealed GT Roadster.

By adopting the GT's underpinnings, the new SL will combine a rear-mounted transaxle with a longitudinally mounted engine up front, optimized for the best possible weight distribution. Additionally, the SL will adopt the GT's double wishbone suspension setup and could receive the German firm's optional Air Body Control system.

The similarities between the duo won't end there. Like the GT, the new SL will adopt lightweight aluminum body panels and the carbon fiber torque tube from its more agile and sportier sibling.

In terms of engines, the model will be available with the company's new M256 inline six-cylinder engine joined by a small 15 kW electric motor and incorporating an electrically driven turbocharger, making for a total of 402 hp in standard tune.

A new AMG variant will also be added to the range with roughly 450 hp on tap. The family will then continue to be topped off with the SL63 AMG and SL65 AMG, the first of which will use the same 4.0-liter twin-turbo V8 of the new E63.

Next-Gen Mercedes-Benz SL To Be Based On AMG GT Platform

The Sport Leicht reloaded for the next decade.

An iconic nameplate in Mercedes’ massive portfolio, the “SL” dates back to the year 1954 with the launch of the “Gullwing” W198 coupe, which to me is the most beautiful car the world has ever seen. The roadster version followed three years later and Mercedes celebrated its60th anniversary earlier this week by taking a trip down to memory lane.

The current R231 model was launched about five years ago and even though it’s far from being a strong seller, the SL-Class is expected to live on into the next decade. A new generation is currently in the works and that’s why we have decided to see into the future of the Sport Leicht by speculatively rendering the all-new gen with headlights derived from theAMG Vision Gran Turismo Concept.

Emphasis on the word “speculatively” since it’s not known at this point how the design of Mercedes’ droptop will evolve in the model’s next iteration. The all-new SL was spotted a couple of times last year while undergoing testing, but it was hiding underneath the body of shorter S-Class Coupe in the S63 specification as seen below.

The seventh generation will allegedly eschew the electrically folding hardtop and switch to a fabric roof like the R129 (1989-2002). If the rumors are going to pan out, the new SL is going to lose some weight as a result of adopting the new soft top, which should also free up additional trunk space thanks to the simpler roof mechanism

They really need to get the next SL right. The segment is living its worst days and there are other alternatives in the market which are really desirable. The 911, the AMG GT, S-Coupe or the upcoming 8er come to my mind.

I couldn't agree more with that.
This car is so well established though. Mercedes needs
To focus on cutting edge features and truly focus on the styling. That would be the strong selling point of this car. This car should be more sexy than anything else in its GT class, period.
