This is exciting news indeed !
Yes, the R107 SL was available with an alibi of a rear seat. Of course, the C107 SLC was a bonafide 2+2 fixed-head coupe.
I don't think Mercedes will replace the S Cabriolet with the SL as they are different types of cars (SL is smaller sportier car and S Cabriolet is a upper end 4 seater luxury drop top). The SL has been a 2+2 before, both the R107 and R129 had small foldaway back jump seats.
I just don't believe that, they've always had an S Coupe. The Cabrio I can see going away, maybe, but not the S Coupe.

Agree. It will exist in one form or another.
I guess you're right there, we may see a 4 Dr Coupé or the likes, but I do hope the original Coupé stays..Perhaps in a form far more athletic than what is currently offered in the form of the C217 models. The next genuine 2 door 2+2 (4 usable seats) GT being based on AMGs' upcoming 4 door GT (minus 2 doors with an even lower, "faster" roofline) ? Or an SL fixed head coupe accompanying the 2+2 droptop ?
The SL becoming a 2+2 is what I've been hearing for multiple sources too
