Some misinformation in there, but some of it sounds right also. I can't wait to see it.

Shit.

SL always had a hard top option, albeit with W113, R107 and R129 it was a one piece roof that had to be attached. (Let's forget C107 for a moment).
Only R107 was 2+2, no?

Anyways, I guess this shows the shape of things to come: S Cabrio will become a history once again, and SL will take it's position. It will probably compete with the 8 Series Cabrio.

This is exciting news indeed !

Yes, the R107 SL was available with an alibi of a rear seat. Of course, the C107 SLC was a bonafide 2+2 fixed-head coupe.

The R129 had two tiny child seats too, I think Mercedes-AMG is going to go after the Ferrari California with the high-end SL models.

I have the two tiny seats in my r129 - they're illegal to put people in but very usually for carrying things.

I don't think Mercedes will replace the S Cabriolet with the SL as they are different types of cars (SL is smaller sportier car and S Cabriolet is a upper end 4 seater luxury drop top). The SL has been a 2+2 before, both the R107 and R129 had small foldaway back jump seats.

I've heard from multiple sources outside this forum that the S-class coupe/cabrio weren't going to see another generation. The vert in particular wasn't an attractive proposition apparently due to no one wanting a vert, much less a high cost one, in pollution-ridden China. The SL is an icon so it gets to stay.

I just don't believe that, they've always had an S Coupe. The Cabrio I can see going away, maybe, but not the S Coupe.

That was my reaction as well, to be honest. With BMW bringing back their 8-series coupe I can't see MB leaving the segment. I guess we'll see!

Agree. It will exist in one form or another.

Perhaps in a form far more athletic than what is currently offered in the form of the C217 models. The next genuine 2 door 2+2 (4 usable seats) GT being based on AMGs' upcoming 4 door GT (minus 2 doors with an even lower, "faster" roofline) ? Or an SL fixed head coupe accompanying the 2+2 droptop ?

I guess you're right there, we may see a 4 Dr Coupé or the likes, but I do hope the original Coupé stays..

So, reports pointing to a soft top 2+2 for the next SL. Same platform with AMG GT.

Now, assuming it is true.

Most of soft top cars have their fixed head coupe variants. BMW 6 coupe and cabrio, soon to be 8 coupe and cabrio. Mercedes own AMG GT coupe and cabrio.

In different classes, Porsche Cayman and Boxster. Even Mazda makes RF version next to the soft top. SL and SLK didnt have coupe version because with folding hardtop they are combined into one.

So, I am assuming its a no brainer that there will be a 2+2 COUPE version of the next SL?

In history, even dedicated soft tops like BMW Z3 and first gen Z4 ended up with coupe versions, albeit limited.

And assuming there will be no more S Coupe and Cabrio (replaced by 4-door coupe variant), an SL Coupe and Cabrio duo will effectively replace them.

Anyone agree or have a different opinion ?

I mean isnt it unlikely that Mercedes will engineer the next SL as convertible only ?

  • The SL becoming a 2+2 is what I've been hearing for multiple sources too
  • Seriously doubt they'll still be using that platform that was originally used for the SLS. That platform is optimized for a 2-seater and there's a reason the SLS and AMG GT have cramped cabins.
  • I personally don't think an SL coupe will be coming. Would've heard something about it by now.

Just terrible and hard to digest.

Why don't they just make an SUV out of it? SUV shape is even more popular....

I don't see an SL Coupe coming - SL is a roadster, and apart form the C107 variant, always was.

Mind you, every SL with soft top always had a hardtop option.

Imo it's all dependant on the future of the S Coupe, if it is unfortunately being put to rest, then it seems an SL Coupe is pretty much going to be given the go ahead..
