The Mercedes-Benz SL-Class (marketed as Mercedes-AMG SL since 2022) is a grand touring roadster manufactured by Mercedes-Benz since 1954.

We're in a golden age of the ICE, one last stand. There are so many new V8 vehicles on the market and some more to come actually, but then that will be it. Get them while you can.

Indeed, the "autumn of its' life" so to speak. The colourful foliage will soon wilt, crackle and turn to dust without fertiliizing the soil of rejuvenation. A new species will emerge and proliferate. The melancholy will increase as winter rapidly approaches.
Spoken like a Poet…but to be honest, it makes me sad. Well Chosen words don’t ease the pain. Farewell my beloved ICE

IMO there is more than the electric propulsion system that makes future cars unappealing/unemotional. while they should in theory allow more design freedom, they are on the contrary all the more generic and soulless. it is as if they are not made by craftsmen but by machines.

A car company as large as Mercedes has become has to compartmentalize a certain design language for the entire lineup.
Anyone who has some sort of car design schooling should know this. It does not matter who takes the place the Wagener as chief design director, they will be faced with this challenge and will most likely receive complaints about design sharing for the fleet.

Design compartmentalization also plays a role in vehicle ranking. The SL, like the S-Class sits at the top of the Mercedes rank and will therefore share some design, tech and features to identify with the S. It is natural that some of the schemes will be very similar. The lower models will also share in some of these schemes in a scaled-down fashion.
This new SL is AMG engineered but the SL is still a Mercedes, therefore, has received some of the latest Mercedes treatments like the triangle sport headlights (those of which can also be found on the EQS.) AMG has sprinkled a few of their own treatments in the mix as well like the front air dam slitter.

I believe the SL will look fine once revealed in official photos.
The headlight shape might be similar to the A-Class and EQS but the SL light treatment is more sharply raked and slimmer looking giving it a distinctive and more sporty look.

Like the SL and S-Class, the AMG 1 sits at the top of the AMG line.
The clay model of the next-generation GT is sort of modeled after the 1.
Similar headlights, front air dam, and side vents. The AMG fleet does not share very much with the Mercedes line in design.

When do we see this car now? Is it pushed back or still at Munich?

My thoughts are that this SL gets more ridiculous every day. Mercedes has been stringing us along for years and I’m pretty much finished with their pie in the sky tidbits. It’s a beautiful car but if it’s unattainable I’ll forget it and buy something that is actually for sale.

I wonder if the SL would be less immune to delays due to issues pertaining to supply chain issues with regards to their V8's considering, like the S580, it's built in Sindelfingen. Perhaps a different plant but in relatively the same place. Or perhaps they are so strapped that putting the V8 in something as niche would really challenge shipping out S580's.

Regarding the semiconductor shortage, is their any relief on the horizon, especially in the automotive sector?

They're expecting the shortage to last well into 2022. The AMG hybrid powertrains are facing delays which is probably the key factor in why we haven't seen the SL yet- at launch it will be using different versions of those powertrains exclusively. I think the S580's status is unrelated.

I suspect this car was supposed to debut at Pebble Beach and it was canceled late. They had the press driving around in 4 generations of SLs but no main course.

And the SL was there for private viewing but no one could get a pic. They really clamped down on security this time. No leaks.
