It would be very disappointing, he cut and glued the front and tail of the GT, boring to death, I do not think they repeat the general shape of the grill that they have used for years in various models.

Which do you prefer?

Top-end

1) SL63 AMG
2) Porsche 911 turbo
3) Ferrari Roma
4) Ferrari Portfino M
5) Bentley Continental GT
6) BMW M8 Competition

Middle:

1) SL53 AMG
2) BMW M850i Cab.
3) Porsche 911 Carrera 4S Cab.
4) Maserati Granturismo
5) Lexus LC500

Low-end:

1) SL43 AMG
2) Porsche Boxster
3) BMW 840i

To me the SL63 AMG is going to struggle in the top-end of the market. So-so in the middle segment, and the SL43 AMG seems to be the most compelling proposition in the low-end segment. Your thoughts?

You mean maybe the GT 4 door, right?
Yes, above all, but it is also the standard form in several of its coupes, sedans, SUVs etc.
It lacks the great elegance and something sporty so differential as always in the SL against the rest of the range
This is just sports.

I just realized that all the Mercedes "sport" and their grill with a star in the middle, (I think they are now the.majority) derive from the grill of the SL, before all the others had the classic grill.
So today more than ever the SL must drive a distinctive, new grille that leads the way.

That's pretty much how I think it will shake out too. Of course Mercedes can't overcome all those cars, especially at the top, those are all top shelf cars. The SL53 with a 429hp I6 will be the one that struggles IMO. It's the same reason why I want a M550i over an E53 or S6, a V8. Mercedes isn't developing the I6 any further, but it sure would be nice if they make a 500hp version of that engine to rival the BMW I6. It would be especially useful here in the SL53. I want a SL63 without the electrics, around 600hp or so. A 800hp SL63e/73 is overkill, but will is pretty much the R129 SL73 all over again.

Middle: Porsche 992 Carrera 4S Cab (or coupe)

Low-end: None of the cars listed

There. That was easy :p

Wasn't it supposed to have only i4 and V8 engines?

After giving it a bit of thought, my "Low end" choice would be the Porsche Cayman.

Now that wasn't that hard after all

Oh, I'm not even bothered about the selection of ICE powerplants.

What I personally lament is the absence of a fully electric powertrain. The torque and refinement would be perfect for the SL. And it could even be configured to emmit a nice, throaty growl similar to that of the Audi RS eTron GT. In addition, it could be perceived as a far more sustainable proposition, rather than being a suspected stopgap solution. And "stopgap" would be such a bloody shame for an automobile as beautiful as the new SL promises to be.

Yes @Jimmy but SL buyers are rich and they want a V8 powered SL that roars like a lion and goes like a cheetah.

You forgot to mention the SL's biggest competitor. The AMG GT.

I’d change that a little. The boxster in t. Third segment. The SL seems DOA at this point; I’d choose the 911 against an SL all day. Better built; better driver and better looking

Seems like the SL53 models are to be powered by the AMG M139 4-cylinder engine. The SL53e will be powered by the powertrain found in the C63.

How do you know this already?

As much as I totally love the 911 I don't think it's a stunning looking car at all. It looks good but in a predictable and boring 911 evolutionary way. Nothing exciting or breathtaking except perhaps the GT3 and Turbo models. This SL on the other hand could be the finest looking SL in a while and will probably give the 911 food for thought in the looks department.

LOL-I changed it myself afterwards. To the Porsche Cayman, of course  .
