Range Rover Range Rover (L405)

The Land Rover Range Rover, generally shortened to Range Rover, is a 4x4 luxury SUV produced by Land Rover, a marque and sub-brand of Jaguar Land Rover. The Range Rover line has been in production since it was launched in 1970 by British Leyland. Additional models have been launched under the Range Rover name, including the Range Rover Sport, Range Rover Evoque, and Range Rover Velar.

Sadly there are no further pictures.

I remember a similar situation regarding the first generation of BMW X5 back in the early 2000s and someone wanted BMW Individual to turn it into a Cabrio. The request was refused because structural areas would be severely compromised.
But someone else done it instead. It was a complete mess.

2015 Range Rover Undergoing Track Testing at the Nurburgring

Land Rover recently announced 2015 model year updates for its benchmark SUV model, the Range Rover. With it being less than two years old, you'd think the company is only going to make minor changes, but as you're about to see, they are taking things very seriously.

Our friends at TouriClips just posted this fresh clip showing what Land Rover is doing to ensure the 2015 is good to go by the time it reaches customers. According to them, the first prototype, licensed BK63XTV, should be the updated big diesel. The model everybody knows as the Range Rover SDV8 will pack 40 extra Nm (30 lb-ft) of torque for a grand total output of 339 PS and 740 Nm (546 lb-ft).

The British SUV experts have also updated the ZF 8HP70 eight-speed automatic gearbox. Not wanting to bore you too much with the details, we'll just say that the torque converter has been re-engineered with an incorporating twin-spring damper. The V8 will thus be more pleasant to drive and between 5th and 8th gear will provide better in-gear acceleration, however, none of this will come with a detriment to fuel consumption.

The other prototype, wearing license plate VX12OMM, sounds like the Range Rover Supercharged and could be testing the features for the new Autobiography Black trim level, a range-topper with 21-inch and 22-inch wheels, LED taillights and darker chrome trim.

Another, less likely, possibility is that a more powerful 5-liter supercharged engine is finding its way under the bonnet. At the Goodwood Festival of Speed, the company showed a 550 hp version of the SUV's younger brother called the Range Rover Sport SVR. It's not quite ready for production yet, but is likely going to be the fastest model ever made by the British manufacturer.

Our dedicated team of spy photographers recently caught up with a rather interesting car from Land Rover. At first we thought it was just a long wheelbase Range Rover version that was simply wearing some camo the driver refused to take off. However, once we got a look at the rear bumper we were shocked.

Not one, not two but four tailpipes were spotted to our sudden surprise. Could this mean that Land Rover is working on a SVR version of the Range? Could very well be a possibility.

At the moment, the most powerful version of the Range Rover L already uses a supercharged 5-liter V8 capable of sending 510 HP and 625 Nm (461 lb-ft) of torque to all four corners of the car. Thanks to the advanced lightweight construction that kept the huge SUV’s weight in check and the all-wheel drive traction, the car can do 100 km/h (62 mph) from a standstill in 5.8 seconds.

That’s more than respectable considering this model wasn’t designed to break land speed world records but rather to offer luxury and comfort aplenty. That’s also why creating an SVR version doesn’t really make sense.

The long wheelbase Range Rover measures 5,276 mm (207.7 inches) in length and is 4,760 mm (187.4 in) wide and that puts it in a whole different class, one that doesn’t really pay attention to drag races of going fast around the Nurburgring. It’s also tipping the scale close to the 3 ton limit, despite heavy usage of aluminum in its construction.

What would the SVR upgrade bring?

If Land Rover is actually testing an SVR version here, then the Range would get the same 5-liter V8 supercharged engine but tuned to make 40 extra horsepower and 55 more Nm of twist, bringing the total to 550 HP and 680 Nm (501 lb-ft) of torque.

Other than the engine upgrade, the ‘hardcore’ model would also get a better, stiffer suspension, new dampers and springs, all in the hopes of making it more stable at higher speeds. The sprint time to 100 km/h (62 mph) would also be improved but not drastically anyway, bringing it probably closer to 5.5 seconds.

No matter what we say and how ludicrous it may seem right now, the photos are not lying. The car spied here has four tailpipes at the back which very well points out to an SVR model. Whether we’ll get to see it make production or not, it’s probably only up to how it fares on the track.

All-electric Range Rover considered to rival Tesla Model X

To adopt different styling
A new report indicates Land Rover is working on a pure electric Range Rover model to compete with the forthcoming Tesla Model X.

Although the Model X isn't yet commercially available, it seems automakers are already working on models to directly compete with Tesla's all-electric SUV which will be out next fall. Land Rover will probably be one of the first to introduce a pure electric high-riding vehicle which is believed to be more than just an electric version of the regular Range Rover.

The model in question will reportedly have a lower roofline and will be more of a crossover to provide a sleeker design, characteristics already hinted by the company's design chief Gerry McGovern who said they are considering a Range Rover expansion with "incredibly luxurious, low-slung" models. The pure electric Range Rover will be primarily designed for on-road use but it will still be able to go off-road thanks to its height-adjustable air suspension.

Autocar is estimating the starting price will be of at least £90,000 and the electric Range Rover will have more standard equipment compared to the Model X. There's no word about a launch date but chances are it won't come out sooner than 2017.

Land Rover SVO and Holland & Holland unveil most luxurious and expensive Range Rover ever

Costs £180,000
Land Rover Special Vehicle Operations (SVO) in collaboration with British gun-maker Holland & Holland have unveiled a special edition of the Range Rover.

The £146,900 Range Rover Autobiography Black long wheelbase is no longer the most expensive Range Rover money can buy as it has been dethroned by a significantly costlier special edition priced at a whopping £180,000. Billed as being the most luxurious and expensive Range Rover ever, it represents the work of Land Rover's SVO division in association with Holland & Holland and is based on the aforementioned previous range-topping model.

It will be visually distinguishable thanks to a Holland & Holland green paint job, special badging and deep green front grille with chrome highlights. Most of the tweaks have occurred on the inside where the high-priced Range Rover has received the Executive Class seating package with two individually adjustable rear seats and an extended reworked center console featuring electrically-deployable walnut tables, upgraded stowage, bespoke lighting and USB charging sockets.

The special Range Rover also benefits from soft tan and espresso leather upholstery with Holland & Holland embroidery on the front seats while the sides of the transmission tunnel have also been wrapped around in a similar leather. The most striking feature can be found in the trunk where there’s a removable leather-trimmed aluminum loadspace cabinet created specifically for this model and featuring an Alcantara interior and enough room for a pair of Holland & Hollands guns. The loadspace floor has been engineered from aluminum and carbon fiber with a leather & wood veneer finish.

Production will be capped at only 40 units annually over the next three years and all cars will be available with either the 339 HP 4.4-liter SDV8 diesel or the 510 HP 5.0-liter LR-V8 Supercharged engine.

Anyone know if there is a big difference in ride quality between the 20" & 22" wheels? Are the tires run flats?

From my own experience going from summer to winter wheels, the winter wheels are always an inch or two smaller then the summers the ride quality increases dramatically. Smaller wheels with fatter widewalls are always going to me more comfortable than larger wheels with rubber bands. I can't see it being any different with the Range Rover.

New ultra-luxury Range Rover teased ahead of New York Auto Show debut
Will be "the most luxurious Range Rover ever produced"

Land Rover has released the first teaser image of a new Range Rover version that will receive its premiere during the New York Auto Show next month.

There’s still not much to report on the new premium SUV, but it will be “the most luxurious Range Rover ever produced”, as announced by the company. Teased along with the new Jaguar XF, the vehicle is expected to cost more than the 185,030 USD of the Range Rover Autobiography Black long wheelbase, probably around 200,000 USD.

Meanwhile, an example of the Range Rover with two-tone paint job that appears to be the model in question was photographed. The machine has a 21- or 22-inch high gloss polished wheels and quad tailpipes.
