Discuss PS5 vs Xbox Series X

Sony has finally unveiled the design of the PS5. It's now possible to do more in-depth comparisons between the PS5 and Xbox Series X.

The PS5 has slightly faster SSD but has a CPU that runs at variable frequency. The Xbox Series X has a faster CPU but it's SSD is in a proprietary format.

Developers tend to develop games for the lowest common denominator and against a specific budget. Therefore the gameplay and performance of the consoles will be evenly matched.

Choice will boil down to user experience, online subscription and other bits that can only be judged once in-depth reviews are available.

Here is my summary of the highlights of the next generation consoles:

Super fast SSD and RAM: Games can be loaded 50-100x faster which means minimal loading times or no cut scenes which are generally used to allow the console to load game to the RAM.

The new speed means that games don’t need to be split into “levels” but different worlds can load in real time as a character moves about.

HDR: Better contrast and colour saturation.

Ray tracing: You can see the reflections of moving objects on windows and puddles of water. Lighting is also dynamic and can bounce of objects. Imagine moving a flash light around a dark bathroom.

Native 4K Gaming: Games can run in 4k instead of 1080p or 2k upscaled to 4k.

120FPS refresh rate: Super smooth gaming.

UHD Bluray playback

Cross-platform gaming

Backwards compatibility the games of previous generation console

Well the x box looks like a box more than ever.
I don’t do x box it’s embarrassing.

ps5 all the way!

I am torn about which one to buy. Three months ago I sold my PS4 Pro for very good money.

Although I enjoyed Grand Turismo 6, I eventuellt got bored and really fancy Forzas gorgeous CGI of real world cities.

I hope that Sony will release an all black variant of the PS5 because the black/white + blue LEDs is an aweful design. It will be an eyesore next to owners other gadgets.

The design reminds me of the vaporware console called Phantom that completely flopped.

Gran Turismo 7 will be the primary reason for purchase for me. I spent about twice the cost of the console on a Thrustmaster steering wheel basically to play Gran Turismo Sport, so I hope to continue to get good use out of that with the next generation.

Ha, since day 1 of Playstation ownership I've been tempted to scoop out the innards of a Hi Fi Separate CD player and try and make a playstation fit inside functionally... but I've gotten used to the the fact the no games console will ever fit in with the rest of my kit.

I'm willing to bet a fiver that your PS4 wheel won't be compatible with PS5.

I'll take that bet... a fiver says it will.

... I mean,...
It's a shame it has to be this way as gamers invest alot of money into accessories. Understandably Thrustmaster and Logitech have to make money. Therefor planned obsolescence makes sense.

This is why serious simulator gamers prefer PCs. I have a PS3 wheel with modified paddles and was gutted that it wasn't compatible with my PS4.

@Centurion

It's definitely a problem, and an expensive one. My PS4 was about £300 (from Argos), my wheel was ~£625. It's understandable that a console becomes obsolete, but the crux of a good wheel needn't really change, it shouldn't become obsolete through evolution nearly as quickly as console... but yet they do. Mines a Thrustmaster-GT, I had a T500RS for the PS3 and that's still supported, so I'm hoping they'll support the GT wheel for at least two gens as well.

If they do, and I don't need to fork out that wedge again, I'll probably go VR for this gen, it really intrigues me.

I don't class myself in the serious gamer camp, but if I like a game, I'm happy to go all in. I have Race Room with all the DTM bits and pieces, but this PC won't run it at even 1 fps, so I stick to consoles... and for me, it's more about the driving than the competitive racing, so a wheel has become a requisite for immersion, more than for simulation.

The only game I play on the PC is Cities: Skylines, but even that pushes it about as far as it wants to go.

On paper the ps5 seems very promising, but i wonder how much devs will really use the ssd. The xbox will potentially actually have slightly better looking games. Will depend on the game catalog i guess. But so far nothing really grounbreaking. I am also intrigued by the new dual sense. Also the console is f#cking huge.

Fingers crossed the wheel will be PS5 compatible! My wheel is the Logitech Driving Force GT with modded paddles. However, during the last weeks of my PS4 ownership I mainly played with the controller as it was quicker to get in and out of a game session.

Cities: Sky Lines sounds fan. I used to be massive strategy game geek and played Settlers, C&C and every Tycoon game under the sun. I bought a 16 inch MacBook Pro this week and will probably buy a Windows Licence to run bootcamp and play some PC games on Steam. Some casual gaming on it could keep me happy until the new consoles have been out for 1-2. I will take the wait and see approach rather than pre-ordering.

I sold my PS4 Pro to CEX for £210 in February which wasn't bad given that I had bought it for £399.

Blimey the PS5 looks massive. This time around Sony and MS have intentionally made their consoles bulky so that they can't be stuffed in cramped AV units with poor air circulation. Either way the internet will also find something to whine about whether it's size, heat, noise or an external power brick.

Both at day one, you are hardcore man. I think i will wait until some big games are released. I skipped last gen, only got the switch. I am probably gonna get one this time, maybe the ps5. On a side note i am sick of seeing GTA5 everywhere, it spanned 3 generations now, time for the 6 to be released.

The Xbox is 20% more powerful. Which is a lot, and games will look better on it, at the very least the multiplats.
Games looked very alike on the PS4 and Xbox One X. Differences were only seen if you zoomed in 200-400x. Developers tend to develop for the lowest common denominator and don't optimise for a specific console unless Sony or MS themselves are pumping money into a flagship game. For cross platform games the Xbox Series X might run at higher frame rates.

The extra 20% is good and will hopefully result in a quiter console compared with the variable clock speed of the PS5, which I worry will lead to instability and frame drops.

Ha! Nice try flame war baiting.

Sony have previously irritated millions of people with proprietary media formats, cables and storage mediums.

It's a big shame because their hardware designs were legendary during the 90s and 00s.

Whats the rest of your kit?

At the moment, not a lot. The backbone of it has always been a Yamaha AV amp or receiver of some sort, and while that led me to lean towards Yamaha for the other bits, I've also dallied with Denon, Rotel, NAD and Marantz over the years, though my main system speaker set up has always been a mix of Kef and Celestion (currently A2's at the front, with an A4C and Kef Q55's at the back). I sold Hifi for 17 years, so the opportunity was there to experiment, and I know what I like.

As of the last couple of years I trimmed right back on the separates and only have an old Yamaha AV receiver and DVD player  though as of next month I'll finally be moving (only taken 4 months so far ) and the first thing I plan to do is pick up another old power-amp for driving my main channel, probably another NAD C270, I'm tempted to see what I can find by the way of functional CD players and MiniDisc players for ****s and giggles, and I can finally get back to having a sub in my system... though I'm not sure what yet. By the time I get a PS5 I'm going to need a new Amp/Receiver also, since I'm all out of digital connectivity.

Never been a fan of Sony stuff, only bit of their kit I ever had was a portable MD player. We didn't sell much of it either, the margin was quite a bit lower on their stuff and they offered the shortest warranty on stuff.
