It's sickening how amazing this car looks and feels. This was Mercedes at the pinnacle.

OT: Do you still have your W140? I want one so badly.

An interesting poll. For me, the W198 "Gullwing" and Roadster. Probably an obvious choice. Runner-ups would be the R129 and the current R232.

When I was a lad, champagne and those shades of brown were where the money was.

Really prefer the earlier R129 models opposed to the later ones, especially if it is a 8 cylinder. They switched from a 4 valve dual overhead cam engine (same engine as 500e) to a 3 valve single cam engine that doesn't sound nearly as characterful. The interior also seemed to have gotten cheaper, and features like the power center rear view mirror went away and the classic steering wheel and seats became all blobby like everything else in the late 90s.

Awesome they made and sold so many, I see them out and about quite often for a car of its' age. And you can buy low mileage examples for mind blowingly cheap.

The 98 is the holy grail. Cost cutting killed the 99s and after for me as you said. Much of it beneath the surface as well.

Yes true the later SL500 models had the 3 valve head engine and lost some power, torque and acceleration performance, but they were lighter on fuel.

It might have more to do with the transmission than engine. You could get 97/98 models with the old engine and the 5 speed, so that is sort of the best of both worlds.

The pre 94 models with CIS are the remarkably worse in terms of efficiency. Big improvement when they switched to fully electronic fuel injection.

That's a museum piece. Wouldn't bother driving it as some of the rubber in critical areas might be old and hard.
