So, I found out my dad's friend got the new M5...

I picked it up for the weekend to drive for a few days. It was literally a dream come true. Driving impressions here: http://perfectsteer.wordpress.com/2012/07/04/5-for-fighting/

Overall, just what I expected... I still don't know what to feel about this car.

Oh dear... Bad news for the Americans. The BMW M5 (and the M6 as well) will be hit by a dreaded U$$ 1.300 Gas Guzzler Tax.

So much for "Efficient Dynamics"... Ironically, however, the X5 and X6 M are not hit by this tax and they get even worse fuel mileage than the M5 and M6. What kind of BS is this?!

Why a BMW M5 is subject to this tax and a Cadillac Escalade is exempt? WTF?!

SUVs are not subject to gas guzzler taxes. That is changing I believe, but not for a while.

It doesn't make sense that a 16 mpg BMW M3 is subject to U$$ 1.300 of gas guzzler tax when a 12 mpg Chevrolet Suburban 2500 4WD is exempt.

This tax is clearly an scam to benefit the IRS and the American manufacturers that dominate the SUV and pick-up truck market.

It's a bullshit tax that's what it is.

You will get no argument from me. We had a "luxury tax" a few years back also, that eventually got struck down. It was even worse.

A "luxury tax"? Damn... And I thought America was free of the evils of socialism...

Yep: http://www.autos.com/car-buying/understanding-luxury-car-tax-and-why-the-rate-is-different

It was dropped in 2002. I though it was in the late 90's but apparently it stuck around until 2002.

What bulsh!t! Those behemoths that are unsafe to all others on the road get no tax, but cars do? As if they should give incentives and rewards to people to buy them? How ass backwards.

^ pretty damn incredible indeed. Beyond incredible actually. What is this nonsense of protecting the SUV in the U.S?

So basically it was a tax to punish those who were doing so well? Bloody hell... Just shows how socialism is EVIL!

You may remember an scrappage scheme called "Cash for Clunkers", don't you?

I've done some research about this program and I found out that the SUVs and pick-ups were the most benefited cars on this program. How so? Simple. Let's say you had a 12 mpg SUV and you wanted to trade-in for a 15 mpg SUV you'd get the 3500 bonus, if you traded for an 17 mpg SUV you'd get the 4500. However, if you had a car rated at 18 mpg and wanted to trade for a car rated at 23 mpg, you'd only get 3500. In order to get the 4500, you'd have to improve 10 mpg or more over your old car. How unfair is that?

We had an scrappage scheme program in the UK and the Koreans made a huge profit out of it. The best selling cars during the program were Hyundais and Kias.

To discourage people from buying a 17 mpg BMW 750i and get a 13 mpg SUV that they don't need. The 13 mpg behemoth needs more trips to the petrol station and that is where the oil companies, sponsored by the U.S government, make their profit. While the U.S government makes a profit by ripping off those who can afford the more economical German luxury saloon.

They're gonna be offering that in the US soon Klier.
Can't wait to get my hands on an M5 for the weekend.
BMW On Demand Service Headed to America » AutoGuide.com News

I wonder if a couple years from now I will be getting service at the dealer and see the facelifted M5 on the showroom floor and decide to trade up/down/across (whatever). By then the hype should have cooled off and you can actually see/drive one.

BMW On Demand doesnt exist in Sweden. Buhu!

Neither does it here, but it's worth the 800 km drive to München. Nice roadtrip with friends, plus we can go visit Welt and the museum.. :D

South, damn, two whole weeks, that's so nice :woot: I'll be having one for only half a day (with an M3 the other half). Great story btw man, and awesome pictures from Wimmer! Why doesn't he post here anymore lately????

BMW M

BMW M GmbH, formerly known as BMW Motorsport GmbH, is a subsidiary of BMW AG that manufactures high-performance luxury cars. BMW M ("M" for "motorsport") was initially created to facilitate BMW's racing program, which was very successful in the 1960s and 1970s. As time passed, BMW M began to supplement BMW's vehicle portfolio with specially modified higher trim models, for which they are now most known by the general public. These M-badged cars traditionally include modified engines, transmissions, suspensions, interior trims, aerodynamics, and exterior modifications to set them apart from their counterparts. All M models are tested and tuned at BMW's private facility at the Nürburgring racing circuit in Germany.
