The BMW 3 Series Coupe is dead. Long live the BMW 4 Series Coupe. It will certainly take some time to get used to the new name, 4 Series, but if this beautiful shape is the reward, then we will not complain at all. Truth to be told, after out spy photographers caught an undisguised prototype a few months ago, little was left to our imagination, but the higher quality photos that came with the press release reveal a lot more details. We are very pleased with the design of the roof, the soft curve and the natural way it meets the trunk. The front end design, same as the coupe's 4-door brother, comes as no surprise, though.
The production begins next month, in July 2013, with the first units expected to hit the dealers in late August - early September. The production of the convertible 4 series will begin in November and the first cabrios are expected to reach dealerships in late December to early January, so we hope for an October reveal. At first, only two gasoline and one diesel engine variants will be available, the 428i, the 435i, with either the standard RWD or optional xDrive, BMW's all wheel drive system and the 420d. The 428i and 428xi feature a 2.0l 4 cylinder turbo engine (N20) with 240 hp at 5000 rpm, while the 435i and 435xi feature the well-known N55 3.0l twin-scroll turbocharged 6-cylinder engine with 300 hp at 5800 rpm. The 420d comes with a 181 hp 2.0l 4-cylinder turbodiesel. There will be two types of transmission available, a standard 6-speed manual and an optional 8-speed automatic with paddle shifters. Later this year, a 420i, 430d and 435d variants will be made available.
The F32 4 series has grown in size compared to the outgoing E92 3 series coupe, measuring 4,638 mm in length (26mm longer than the E92), 1,825 mm in width (43mm wider) and 1,362 mm in height (16mm lower). The wheelbase is now 2,810 mm (up by 50mm) and the weight is 1450kg for the base 420d, or 30kg more than the old 320d coupé, in six-speed manual guise. Just like the F30 3 series, the potential buyer has to choose a "Line", instead of the traditional equipment level. There are currently four lines to choose from, the M Sport Line, the Sport Line, the Modern Line and the Luxury Line.
Compared to the F30 3 series, on which the F32 4 series is based, the springs, the shock absorbers and the axle kinematics are re-tuned, tailored for the 4 series Coupe. Special attention has been paid to the front of the car, which comes with an additional strut between front axle subframe and body sill, lightweight aluminum torque struts, wishbones and swivel bearings. The air curtain and air breathers improve the aerodynamic efficiency, resulting in a Cd of just 0.28, same as the E92 M3.
