M5 Officially Official: The BMW M5 F10.

The BMW M5 is a high-performance variant of the BMW 5 Series marketed under the BMW M sub-brand. It is considered an iconic vehicle in the sports saloon category. The first M5 model was hand-built beginning in late 1984 on the E28 535i chassis with a modified engine from the M1 that made it the fastest production saloon at the time. M5 models have been produced for every generation of the 5 Series since 1984, with occasional gaps in production (1995 to 1998, 2023 to 2024). Official website: BMW M
I would of thought less weight. It's nearing 4300 lbs.

Looking at the specs on bmwusa.com of an 550i w/Auto, it already weighs 4376 lbs. (unladen weight)... so I'm not sure why the weight of the M5 is surprising.

You also have to remember, this new M5 is tailored to be even more of an Executive Performance sedan, so many luxury features are retained because I imagine the majority of M5 owners still want all those creature comforts. As much as we all wish for a significant weight reduction, the M5 is still a luxury car FIRST...and performance sedan SECOND. M6 may be a different story....

^M6 will be a M5 with 2 less doors..exact same engine..mark my words..

PS
Seems like the MB crowd is liking this car more than the BMW boys..

There seem to be some lack of enthusiasm.. I remember the last time (E60)..it was mayhem..
Come on guys.. it deserves better than this:)

Man that is just gorgeous..now imagine that in white or dark blue..sick!!

Epic battle: TT V8 E63 vs TT V8 M5.:D

You can actually already predict that M5 wont be quicker than CLS63 AMG PP and Panamera Turbo. Very sad and deep inside BMW cannot be satisfied with the new M5, they will never admit it though.

The new M5 will be very possibly as fast as Panamera Turbo S in 100-200km/h acceleration. Which is pretty impressive considering M5 will be around 100 000€ and Panamera Turbo S is in 170 000+€ range. In 0-100km/h there is no contest, but who cares ? Stoplight racers only.

I thought the 550i was weighing much less than that, but they did manage to trim some extra fat with the M5,so all in all it's not too bad. The E63 is lighter, and if Audi is to utilize "ultra" light weight tech on the RS6. Then the M would probably be heaviest in class.

Neither stat is more important than the other in the real world.

There's something more to all that fancy plumbing and heftier cooling for just 5 horses surely...

The 'lag free' power delivery perhaps (as mentioned in the release)??? Or did they talk about a 'lag free' engine in the X5 M press release as well???
Or maybe the different plumbing is just that: different. Because the engine bay of X5 is much bigger, there's some differences for the 5er engine bay...

Either way, only 5 hp extra is just awkward, considering the fact that they frequently said to expect more power than in X5 M....and then they come with the exact same torque figures and a measly 5 hp extra?? I mean seriously?!?!

Also, M5 is 1,0 second slower 0-200 than Panamera Turbo S ;/ Could be the RWD 0-100 time that's causing the difference?

I know EU weight is DIN + 75 kgs. Any one know for sure how curb weight relates to DIN? As far as I can remember it is same as DIN, but full tank instead of 90% fuel. If so, M5 compares very well with CLS 63.

M5 (DIN) 4,122lb vs CLS 63 (curb weight): 4277 lbs.

Not sure where new E63 stacks up. The old one with 6.3l V8 has a curb weight of 4084 lbs.

The other thing people seem to forget is that it takes an almost $10000 option to bring E63/CLS63 to the same power level as M5.

I agree the M5 is fat, and the specs on paper are pretty weak. M3 has 420 hp like the old RS4, M5 has even less hp than the old RS6. But they'll make it work in real life, I have no doubt. If it was the case that the M5 was slower than Panny Turbo/RS6 with 560 hp, they would have given the car 580 hp instead. But it looks like that wasn't necessary...

You better hope that wish comes true!

And Panamera turbo has a hefty curb weight of 4343 lbs. So the 4122 lbs of M5 is not bad at all.

That fatter plumbing and bigger coolers have a purpose I surmise and it's about creating a power delivery that's closer to the M5 ethos than, say, that of an X5M in terms of rev range and high rpm response. It's all about improving the flow. Especially at high rpm - traditionally the power delivery graveyard for sensibly turbocharged engines. You've heard the expression "running out of puff at high revs". The reason for this is that the throughput of the turbocharger and ancilliary systems is unable to keep up with the volumetric flow demands of the engine at high rpm.

The engine in the F10M makes the same torque as the S63 in the X5M over much the same rpm range (actually it's 100 rpm more @ 5750) but more significantly it makes its 560 HP at 1000 rpm more than the X5M across 6000 - 7000 rpm.

The different plumbing isn't there for the ponies - a simple chipping would've sufficed - rather, I'm 99% sure it's there to make the engine breathe better and more like a traditional M engine.

Sunny, fat as it is, Turbo S is faster than M5.... And 1950 kg is very bad imo. Damn.

Maybe that's why they call it a high revving engine in the press release. High revving pretty much like an NA engine, without running out of stream like a diesel engine or traditional turbo engine.

Well... hmm... what should I say.
The new 5-series is a nice car. This looks like a 5-series with M-package.
It doesnt give me the WOW as E39 or E60 had over the normal 5-series.
0-200 in 13 seconds is not THAT good in my opinion. Not for a brand new M5.
Im not overwhelmed, but I dont dislike it. It just... meh... okay.

BMW M

BMW M GmbH, formerly known as BMW Motorsport GmbH, is a subsidiary of BMW AG that manufactures high-performance luxury cars. BMW M ("M" for "motorsport") was initially created to facilitate BMW's racing program, which was very successful in the 1960s and 1970s. As time passed, BMW M began to supplement BMW's vehicle portfolio with specially modified higher trim models, for which they are now most known by the general public. These M-badged cars traditionally include modified engines, transmissions, suspensions, interior trims, aerodynamics, and exterior modifications to set them apart from their counterparts. All M models are tested and tuned at BMW's private facility at the Nürburgring racing circuit in Germany.
