M5 [Official] The new BMW M5 CS

The BMW M5 is a high-performance variant of the BMW 5 Series marketed under the BMW M sub-brand. It is considered an iconic vehicle in the sports saloon category. The first M5 model was hand-built beginning in late 1984 on the E28 535i chassis with a modified engine from the M1 that made it the fastest production saloon at the time. M5 models have been produced for every generation of the 5 Series since 1984, with occasional gaps in production (1995 to 1998, 2023 to 2024). Official website: BMW M
Gotta hand it to that M5 CS - it is a spectacular piece of performance saloon excellence. In my opinion, the best M5 since the E39.
On paper the most exiting M5 is the E60, but in reality it was slower than its competition, while this M5 CS is a monster in every aspect. The E39 M5 is IMHO the best sedan that's ever existed.

The E60’s S85 V10 was one of the greatest BMW engines ever. Sadly it was never matched with a transmission suited to complementing its high-revving nature with the smooth and refined shifting required of a luxury saloon. I was lucky enough to drive an E39 M5 - all too briefly - back when it was newly launched and that left an indelible impression. 500 Nm of instant NA shove from so low down in the rev range. What a magnificent driver’s car.

I don't think there has never been an M5 close to this level. None of them were as 'hardcore' as this CS is. The E39 was great for it's day, but not on a 'CS' level at all.

E60 M5 remains the greatest though. SMG in combination with the high revving V10 is f'ing awesome, and suits that car very very well. E39 the most impactful for the industry (quad exhaust anyone?) and arguably the prettiest to this day.
Oh well, we all have our favorites but it's safe to say every single M5 (the worst being the F10) is a special car.

Marvel-ous plate.

I remember when Gerhard Richter was questioned about the manual E60 offered in the US would be offered in Europe as well. His reply was no because it’s Shit!

The manual is unquestionably the inferior transmission. I was never an advocate of the manual in the E60 M5. A decent DCT would've made it much, much better. I never drove the E60 M5, but I did the E61 M6. Good grief, that has to be the worst gearbox I'd ever experienced in a performance car.

They were thinking about the manual exclusively for the E63 M6 CSL. Which has been seen in a few videos in the Garching underground facility.

Apparently there are dealers in the US asking USD50k premium for the M5 CS. At a starting price of $149k, it makes it one expensive sedan! Will no doubt be collectable, but what do you think?

I think that's the price we pay for a second hand version of the CS. So, instant buy at that price. A nicely equipped M340i costs the same here.

I think production will likely stop at the end of March 2022, and dealers worldwide know this. If I had the money or just won the lottery, I'd have already purchased one. At current exchange rates, a USD 50k premium is a steal compared to European listings.

reminds me of the E28 M5

I have to say, the colour pallet for the CS is a bit sh!t... An E28 M5 inspired Schwarz (or Diamond black) example, with chrome accents instead of matte bronze, and a set of single colour silver alloy wheels, would be pretty cool.

I do like the elements that make the CS unique, I'm just not sure I'd spec them if I had the chance and the choice.

BMW M

BMW M GmbH, formerly known as BMW Motorsport GmbH, is a subsidiary of BMW AG that manufactures high-performance luxury cars. BMW M ("M" for "motorsport") was initially created to facilitate BMW's racing program, which was very successful in the 1960s and 1970s. As time passed, BMW M began to supplement BMW's vehicle portfolio with specially modified higher trim models, for which they are now most known by the general public. These M-badged cars traditionally include modified engines, transmissions, suspensions, interior trims, aerodynamics, and exterior modifications to set them apart from their counterparts. All M models are tested and tuned at BMW's private facility at the Nürburgring racing circuit in Germany.
