Of course it'll handle well, but my god the cost of consumables are gonna be more than ever

Isn’t Porsche about to launch a refreshed 911 with a small electric engine that barely adds 25 Kg to the total weight of the car?

Sounds like a more reasonable tech for performance cars than this heavy hybrids.

If the reported weights are correct, even the new Taycan Turbo S with 950hp weighs ~140kg lighter!

So BMW M had no real options in this generation. Keeping ICE only was no option because of interstellar fines they would have to pay with EU 95g/km CO2 threshold.

So:
- don't do an M5 this gen
- do a heavy pig hybrid
- do a slightly lighter BEV

But BMW BEV tech wasn't there at this point in time ...

Consistent with my experience in my S6… handeled reasonably well but steering wasn’t the best.

The 5 is much taller than the other two and seems to sit higher. This will bode well in cities with bad roads.

I also remember driving the G10? 540 and the W213 E300/350 when they first released. I didn’t like the steering or the agressiveness on the 540 but the E drove brilliantly. I think BMW has lost its way a little.

The New BMW M5 Reportedly Weighs 5,368 Pounds And We’re Worried
That's 2,435 kilograms.
Whether we’re talking about sedans, coupes, hatchbacks, or SUVs, it's always the same story. Whenever a new car debuts, it's bigger and heavier than its predecessor. If we're lucky, the automaker adds horsepower and torque to try and partially compensate for the rampant obesity. The new BMW M5 fits the bill, provided a new report from a reputable BMW insider is accurate.

A Bimmer Post forums member with a good track record of getting things right about future BMWs has shared some juicy technical specifications. Codenamed G90, the super sedan will inherit the plug-in hybrid V8 setup from the controversial XM. For this new application, engineers from Bavaria are allegedly dialing the electrified powertrain to 718 hp. The twin-turbo 4.4-liter gasoline engine is said to be good for 577 hp and 750 Nm (553 lb-ft) whereas the electric motor is rated at 194 hp and 280 Nm (207 lb-ft).

Not sure how this has been done by BMW. Was nobody paying attention to the AMG GT Hybrid vs M8 tests?

If the upcoming M5 was ICE it'd be priced like a Ferrari.

Simply put, there in no other way.

RIP BMW… they lasted as long as they legally could. Makes something like an M2 even more special now

Nonsense. As if VAG or MB were doing any better. Let alone brands like Jaguar, Alfa, etc.

I suspect they're paying more attention to how beneficial to the fleet figures, the XM powertrain makes the M5.

LMAO the XM is a old VW Polo heavier than the M8.....

Can they? Not sure if Brussels burocrats would allow for it. Although, with all the recent fear for EV transition being slower than expected, it would be nice for BMW to keep ICE Ms for a few years down the line.
