Boxster/Cayman (981) [Official] Porsche Cayman (981)

The Porsche 981 is the internal designation given to the third-generation Boxster/Cayman (second generation Cayman) models built by Porsche. Production: 2012–2016. It was succeeded by the Porsche 982.
From the pics comparing the 991 to the cayman , with the 991 it seems as though the Carrera shape has been stretched out too much , as was mentioned earlier look at how much rear overhang it has! The cayman has none of that stretched out appearance. It's still hard to decide which is nicer based on looks alone. Props to porsche for doing it right with the cayman. Maybe next time around they could differentiate the headlights and tail lights further from the boxster

Wow, I can't believe it, and I can't get myself to diss the 991, but I can't say the Cayman looks "worse" AT ALL than the 911. There are MANY reasons as to why people can think it looks better. The Cayman IMO looks like it could be a $200K car, and I mean that, it looks like it's as expensive as an Aston, a Gallardo, a Bentley (yet in a different way as it's much more sporty, etc. It looks ridiculously premium. It looks like Porsche cut no corners, NONE, in the exterior design.

This will 100% be my next car IF the small size doesn't detract me. The 991 is already small enough for me and I was already fretting that.

It seems like the extra several inches the 991 has on the Cayman in terms of length is mostly all in the rear portion (after the doors), and a little bit in an elongated front overhang. As for proportions, the Cayman appears longer than it really is due to such short overhangs and such a simply glorious stance.

If I recall correctly, the new Cayman's wheelbase is actually longer than a 991's. No idea how that translates into interior space, as Cayman is mid-engined and has no rear seats..

I'm guessing these LED Daytime Running Lights were fake then?

Wow, really?! That would be something.

I'd definitely pick the Cayman over a base 991. 991 still looks good, but it has become more of a GT and less of a sports car in it's proportions. I hope Porsche manages to infuse some serious sportiness when it comes to 991 GT3, the 991 line can definitely use it.

Somebody correct my data if they are wrong please, I think the 991's wheelbase is 2,450 mm whereas the 981 Cayman is 2,476 mm (60mm longer than 987).

No idea what this translates into in the interiors..

Porsche is at the top of its game. Seriously, when/if the Panamera GT comes out, it's literally going to have the best lineup of ANY brand. Just magnificent.

Porsche is the best run of the German companies, if not the best run auto company period. Their lineup is full of winners, not one dud in the bunch and nearly all of them look the part also. I hope VW doesn't ruin them, we won't know until the next generation of cars. Now bring on the Panamera facelift and the 918 please. After that a Cayenne facelift and the new mi-engine sports car to take on Ferrari and McLaren. Porsche is FIRE.

Looked it up, you're right! The Boxster chassis wheelbase is longer than the 991! Good news for me! Technically that should mean it'll have sublime proportions with that fixed roof, long wheelbase and no overhangs.

If my head fits in it, which I hope it does, and it doesn't feel too claustrophobic or freak me out in regards to crash worthiness with a car of much bigger mass (in terms of laws of physics), then it'll be the strongest candidate for my next car. At $64-ish K for an S model with those looks and engineering, it is an absolute value monster! The Base model is even less but I'd have to go for the S.

Will this car have DRL LED's? I mean it has to due to regulations right? I wonder how they'll apply it. Hopefully the stunning way some of the newer Panamera's have it, with individual LED "crystals" or "dots" surrounding the headlight projector unit. Much classier and simpler than the "LED around the headlights" interpretation by M-B and the like, with over-designed, too much attention consuming, soon-to-be-passe decor.

DRL are integrated into the lower round lights that look like fog lights (but aren't), and yes, they're LED.

Don't worry about crash worthiness because I've seen a Boxster which took out 5 concrete posts in a field and according to the guy who went to collect it from the crash site both driver and passenger stepped out without a scratch though bruised a little, no doubt very stiff over the coming days. I took photos and will try and hurt them up for you.

I can't think of a stronger roadster.

The only thing I like better on the 991 are the rear lights cluster, after that is all Cayman for me

While we are on the topic of inter-Porsche fratricide, for me a tougher choice than a 991 would be between a Cayman S and a 997.1 GT3.

At about the cost (~80k) of a decently equipped Cayman S, you can have a slightly used certified 997.1 GT3 with a LeMans winning engine block and best steering this side of an Elise (and the bulk of the depreciation already spoken for).
