Cayenne [Official] Porsche Cayenne gets V8 Twin-turbo Diesel Engine


The Porsche Cayenne is a series of automobiles manufactured by Porsche since 2002. It is a luxury crossover SUV, and has been described as both a full-sized and a mid-sized vehicle.

Porsche has confirmed long running rumours that it will add a second diesel model to its Cayenne line-up as part of efforts to further boost its sales potential in the face of increased luxury SUV competition.

Pictured here for the first time ahead of a planned world premiere at the Paris motor show at the end of September, the new Cayenne S Diesel runs the latest evolution of Audi’s 4.2-litre V8 diesel engine. With twin variable vane turbochargers and the latest in piezo valve guided common rail injection technology, the 90-degree unit kicks out a BMW X6 M50d beating 377bhp and 626lb ft – an increase of 140bhp and 221lb ft on the existing single turbocharged 3.0-ltire V6 diesel engine found in the popular Cayenne Diesel.

According to Porsche’s own performance figures, the added reserves are sufficient to haul the four-wheel drive Cayenne S Diesel from standstill to 62mph in 5.7sec and to a top speed of 157mph. It they also help extend its towing capacity to 3500kg.

Combined economy is rated at 34.0mpg and CO2 emissions at 218g/km thanks to various fuel-saving technology including stop-start. As with rival BMW and its new twin-turbocharged 3.0-litre in-line six-cylinder diesel engine, Porsche says it has worked hard at providing the new V8 diesel, which is also earmarked to join a facelifted Panamera line-up in 2013, with a distinctive sound, which it likens to its more traditional V8 petrol units.

The strong torque qualities of the big diesel has also led to a unique set-up for the Cayenne’s four-wheel drive system, with torque vectoring set to offered as optional equipment.

Oh. Wow.
If this was available at the time I needed a new SUV, I would have taken it over the Rangie. I was wondering if they were going to go twin-turbo V6 as per the Audi SQ5 or V8.... The specs are brilliant, the drive will be amazing :-)

Martin, I have promised myself not to change my cars as often as I do. I promised I'd keep the F10 for 4 years. It lasted 18 months and 22,000Km's. My partner promised me the Boxster would last 5 years. It has 14,000Km's on it and is already being replaced with the new Boxster. At this rate we will have not a bean to spare when we get old LOL!
SO - as tempting as the Cayenne Diesel S is, I will try and make it to the new Cayenne or the next BMW X5 M50d. Or the next RR Sport when it's been around for 2 years or so.

However, to make it to 4 years and 75,000Km with my current car is going to require a great deal of restraint and impulse suppression!
 
I drove the older Q7v8TDi a few years ago and that thing was a rocket off the line, in this it not only has more power but is lighter too, should be a demon.
 
Like the engine but let be honest here. The new Cayenne looks like a japanse car, it aint a beauty, thats for sure.

Of course it's marketing, just like the B6 S4v8 had one more than the then M3, the E9x M3 matching the output of the B7 RS4, it's all marketing. I'm sure if you looked hard enough you would see hundreds of examples of this.
 
If Porsche was first, then BMW would have done the exact same thing.

True. And that's a good thing - hopefully;)

The current Cayenne series is an excellent value proposition IMO. It's a Porsche and a brilliant one at that, I can go on and on about the way I feel and view the car and its perfect cabin. But what I am really hoping for is better value in offering in terms of money with the next F15 X5's. The entry level Cayenne for instance is any premium SUV's nemesis in terms of value for money right now(y)

And bare in mind (especially here in SA) the Cayenne's residuals is rock solid, diamond hard and indestructible!
 
^You might feel this way but it's actually an exceptionally good engine and given the choice between it and the M50d engine I would pick the v8 TDI every time.

There's no real substitute for capacity.
 
This car is already available to order in South Africa, deliveries Q1 next year. Damn i wish i'd waited, but now I have to keep with my RR, the loss in resale will be too painful to bear! The Porsche iteration of this engine is considerably fettled. Torque and power are significantly higher than the Audi version. Does anyone have any information on how this was achieved? Did Porsche simply optimise boost and intercooler efficiencies? You can't ask Porsche for this, they simply raise their eyebrows and say it has been worked on by Porsche to give a Porsche motoring experience :) it certainly will deliver on that front though, performance specs are fantastic and it apparently has a wonderful V8 burble to it.

LOL. I don't care what a VAG fanboy would pick. Audi is no engine master. And they never will be.
 
^ Martin, I have a sneaky suspicion you might know what separates the cayenne s diesel from the Audi v8 diesel, if you do please share your opinion I think this might be my next car and Porsche won't even get into the conversation! I'm not an engineering fundi anymore, I've drifted away from keeping up :)

If I am not mistaken, the only difference is the badge on the plastic cover of the engine.

Truth to be told though, both Audi's V6 and V8 TDI are very very good engines.

^ but there are significant differences in output beneath the badge. I'm very curious about what separates the brand's equity, if there is any separation beneath the skin and of course, suspension, handling and interior.
