Love this car. Why anyone would buy any other 2 seater convertible south of $150000 when this beautiful machine is available is incomperhensible and ungraspable. Porsche is in full designing form and one after the other their recent models are getting prettier and more. And the 918 is the prettiest of all current automobiles.

Maybe it is my subconscious ownership bias, but I think they sort of mucked this one up.
When my allocation for the GT4 came up, I seriously debated passing and waiting for a .2 because - a. I needed another impractical sports car as much as the blind need a second 4k TV and b. Porsche usually does an awesome job rounding off the product with the facelifts. But the unknown of what will power a .2 GT4 made me not pass. But now, even ignoring that unknown factor, and purely from an appearance aspect, I am glad I didn't pass.
Anyway, it will be interesting how this sells. The Boxster and especially Cayman were already slow sellers here (interesting tidbit - my GT4 allocation was the prize for a contest PCNA had for the dealers to move Caymans). I read that the 718 is apparently going to cost 5k more than the respective 981 version and will now have a 4 cyl engine... I think it will be a hard sell. OTOH, you can't deny the performance - 0-60 in 4secs (for S with PDK and sport chrono) is bloody fast.

I agree with you on most levels. The sad truth is that, realistically, there isn't really a legitimate competitor to the Boxster. Merc's SLC and BMW's Z4 are more Granvertibles than real sports cars. Nissan's 370Z is coarse, over-priced rubbish and Audi's FWD-originated TT can't come close in terms of dynamics.
I am completely convinced that this new Boxster represents no progress over the pre-facelift model from a visceral, emotive and enjoyment perspective. It even doesn't look better. A step backwards for any true Porschephile.

^ But Porsches are generally evolutionary and the company fine tune the original design to make it better with every new version that generally stick to the original core design. What I like about this new model is the treatment they have done with the rear end. The new tail lights and the horizontal slot between the clusters are the best rear design element of all versions of Boxter/718 IMO. It is distinctive and exotic. The front is generic Porsche but much better than earlier versions of Boxter/Cayman. I find similar appeal from Jaguar F type also. The front of the F type quite generic and its the rear end which is a masterpiece design.

It's biggest rival is probably the immensely seductive F-Type which has been a huge hit for Jaguar.

I am a teeny bit disappointed with the updates to this car, I think the 981 Boxster actually looks much better than this 718 update, especially the rear its much prettier on the 981. I don't like that center panel with raised Porsche lettering and the back lights don't look neat.

I feared that some day these very words spoken from Martin's heart many many years ago would come back and bite him.
We are going through dark times recently. Porsche going 4banger turbo, me getting a smartphone...

Wow....some really don't like this "new" 718 Boxster. Whether one likes the cosmetic updates is obviously subjective, and the move to a turbo 4 cylinder may make it sound less "exciting" than the old naturally aspirated flat 6.
But I am really impressed by it's claimed acceleration times. Both the base and S versions of the 718 Boxster are seriously fast cars. They would likely embarrass the previous 991.1 Carrera and Carrera S cars in terms of straight line acceleration given the abundant low end torque. And the handling will probably be just as good if not better than before. From the performance point of view, it is a likely a big winner for its price.
I bet the 718 Boxster S and eventual Cayman equivalent will give the "old" Cayman GT4 a run for its money in terms of performance numbers.

The F-Type is also a slow seller in the States despite all the hype. Interest has been lost in many of the compact sport cars, which is a shame because they (at least the Cayman/Boxster & F-Type) perform well and look good. Its the "hair dresser's car" stigma from the early 2000s to be frank.

That is such an easy one to bat.
It's all relative of course, a Boxer 4 in a Boxster is still way better than any inline four. A flat four is still superior in terms of engine balance and centre of gravity compared to an inline four. Does it better a flat six? Hell no.Boxer engines remain uniquely engaging pieces of engineering. Boxster S will still be superior to drive over any of its present and future competitors. It will just be missing something very special presently to be found in the current 981 series of cars: an overdose of character. You can only appreciate this after driving one a lot. Pure hedonism at a fantastic price point.
