I'm sure BMW hopes the 7-er will put a big dent in both S, and EQS sales, but being realistic I think it'll be both the 7-er, and the EQS, and the lack of S-Coupe/S-convertible, that will only somewhat erode the sales figures for S-Class.

Even if BMW played it safe, and basically made an S-Class with a BMW badge on it, matching the Mercedes offering beat for beat, I think brand loyalty is still going to keep the Mercedes on top. Merc would really have to drop the ball with the S, at the same time as BMW making an S-Clone, to see any kind of mass-migration - and I just don't see that scenario arising.

I think the A8/S8 demonstrates that trying to do modern "understated" luxury in the S-Class segment, doesn't really get you anywhere.

Instead, BMW have to do something different, and accept that 'different' in this segment leads to a smaller customer base, in the hope that the 'different' slice of the cake is still bigger than the crumbs left behind from the S-Class's slice.

I also can't imagine they made the decision to go LWB only, without accepting the loss of sales that would go with that.

Agreed. I'm sure BMW are well aware, they're losing a substantial European market share, going LWB (n this case extra LWB) only. It's a calculated risk.

Audi's more recent exterior design exercises have placed them in somewhat perilous waters, stuck in a bind between "too much going on" (case in point: eTron GT) and "playing it too safe" (case in point: D5 A/S8). At this point of time, the Q4 eTrons and current A/S6 impress me. All else, not so much.

Attempting to look a bit into the future:

The excessive visual tactics applied (be it in the form of tacky applications, escalating girth or both) in order to promote the air of oppulence will only be received with increasing criticism here in Europe. More subtle, "under the radar" approaches may be pursued in which "oppulence" will be primarily confined to passenger compartments, exteriors becoming more stealth, more smooth and less adorned with feigned "bold" add-ons (those being replaced by increasingly innovative light unit solutions).
An example of what may be a blueprint for the aforementioned can be seen in the video below:

Not wanting to derail this thread nor promote the EQS. But seeing increasingly more EQS cars in traffic leave me realizing just how subdued the design of the car is and how effectively M-B designers have somehow masked its' large dimensions. It is becoming all the more clear to me that the EQS (and probably the EQE) will find many customers here in Europe.

Now... this is it for me! Retains the details but lowers the car and removes the excessive mass from the top half of the car.
It looks a million times better and I wouldn't have had a single problem with this look. Still imposing AF if that's what you are after but waaay sleeker.

I think the 7 will definitely take a bigger bite out of the S than the previous generation.

Seeing the comparative photos between the previous 7 and the W222/W223, the soft lines of the body, the lack of aggression on the front (pre-lci) and all the internal accommodation made it that 7 more S than ever before, they were two drops of water in concept, it was a strategy that didn't work out, I think that's why it didn't attract so much attention to me or the public in general, taking a firm second place.

On the other hand, with this one it is the complete opposite to my eyes, it takes everything good from the Merc, and I add everything good from BMW, it has personality, aggression, and a design that says here I am and I bring something new, I look different from everything and I provoke you to try me.

The S class has been breaking sales records on a regular basis, but I think that at least now there are strong and clear arguments to fight it.

How photogenic it is, it never gets boring, each outdoor photo reveals something new and nice , very good images

New wheels?

The design is very structured to hide its dimensions, at sight it does not look like an LWB in any case, designed from scratch with the goal in that and not look like a "stretched" SWB
You will realize its size when you want to put it in the garage
