SL-Class [Official] Mercedes-Maybach SL Monogram Series (R232)

The Mercedes-Benz SL-Class (marketed as Mercedes-AMG SL since 2022) is a grand touring sports car manufactured by Mercedes-Benz since 1954. The designation "SL" derives from the German term "Sport-Leicht", which translates to "Sport Light" in English.

When a replica looks better than the original thing…

Not necessarily Maybach SL specific:

I perceive THIS to be the most compelling exercise pertaining to the silhouette of front end design. A perfect interaction involving the front wheels + arches, the "prestige clearance" between the base of the A-pillars and front wheel hubs, the extremely shallow mass between the crest of the wheelarch openings and that of the front fenders/hoodline, overhang and sheetmetal sculpturing. For me, a masterclass that M-B should attempt to replicate as best possible on ALL of their cars.

I find this model not quite as offending as most of you seem to. Although I am not the typical Maybach clientele, I can see the case for this softer SL.

That white interior, however, makes me nervous if I were the owner. It would not stay white for long, unless one commits to wear linnen clothing forever.
It indeed has a more comfort orientated suspension, engine characteristics and much more sound insulation, than a normal SL.

This is a waste of time product. And I would want to know who approved it's creation.

Even the Maybach-S at least has a uniquely long wheelbase. This business of adding some shiny trim and charging thousands extra for it is a bit silly. At least create some unique bodywork, even if it is to share the same platforms.

A V12 would have justified it for me. Yeah I know the arguments against it, but still. You have a S680 V12 and a SL680 with a V8. Mercedes is suffering from schizophrenia.

In my book, every Maybach needs to have a V12. That would be consistent with what Maybach stands for: luxury and opulence.

It’s a f#cking handbag on wheels. Disgraceful.

Mercedes Benz has completely lost sight of what once made them the best carmaker in the world. Mercedes' substance was their style, their image and recognition underpinned by reputation.

They seem to be in desperate need of a crown jewel to compete with BMW’s spot-on custodianship of Rolls Royce but they’ve been at sea with what to do with the Maybach brand.

TACKY AS F*CK!!! When did Mercedes become this tasteless? With all that Maybach logo overload, and that HORRIBLE bonnet with all the logos…Just sad seeing the original Maybach concept evolving into this cheap looking thing. The SL should’ve been offered just as an AMG model.
And also, who is dumb enough to buy this over the Continental or DB12?
It might be designed for the Chinese market. Hence why the launch colour is red. The Middle Eastern markets will likely also appreciate it.

That part and beyond a handful of models, there is very little of that left today. I often wonder where they would be if they hadn't changed course after the Japanese arrived. Would they be like Bentley, true and expensive and lower volume or out of business.

I think it's less the Japanese and more the moneybags American shareholder mentality.
As soon as the bean counters started running the brand, it lost its way.

I don't think using Maybach as a trim level to be a more affordable Rolls Royce alternative is necessarily bad. However the brand needs more money, more obviously injected into it. Bespoke front apron, rather than just a spiffy grille. Unique headlamps and tail lights. Perhaps even one or two different bodywork pieces. Totally unique interior.

I also think that should apply to the flagship AMGs too.

The Sl Maybach looks like a midget in a suit.
Reminds me of these.😂 If this car was a human:

Lol got it. So the response to my observation is basically “my friends and I who couldn’t afford this car didn’t lust after it back in the day” and “it was the only car for sale” which I am not sure if you are trying to make a joke, if you are it’s a terrible one. There were more options in the class in 91 than there is now.

"it was the only car for sale" clearly was hyperbole. But in the sports car class there sure as hell weren't a bazillion supercars from 25 different brands on sale, like there are now. With one or two new ones coming out every single year!
So yeah a dying segment combined with a plethora of competition (where most cars are better than the Mercedes) brings us where we are now.

If the SL was handmade and unique like it was in '91, it might be a different story. However the current SL can be seen as a modded C class. Or E class. Or whatever standard other Benz. Now try to market that against bespoke unique sports cars which cost the same or not much more.

Anyways, I think we agree.

TACKY AS F*CK!!! When did Mercedes become this tasteless?

I keep repeating myself, but Wagener is an absolute utter 100% certified disaster.
Honestly can't believe the board is letting all this happen.

Mercedes-Maybach

In November 2014, Daimler announced the revival of the Maybach name as a sub-brand of the Mercedes-Benz S-Class (W222), positioned as an upscale version akin to the more sporty Mercedes-AMG sub-brand.
