SL-Class [Official] Mercedes-Maybach SL Monogram Series (R232)

The Mercedes-Benz SL-Class (marketed as Mercedes-AMG SL since 2022) is a grand touring sports car manufactured by Mercedes-Benz since 1954. The designation "SL" derives from the German term "Sport-Leicht", which translates to "Sport Light" in English.

NO. Absolutely no.

In a world of Gucci , Balenciaga and other Z gen brands , yes.

But if MB has become synonymous with them , than this brand it's lost.

There are plenty of luxury brands that stay under the radar, and they are mainstream without putting 20515 logos on it ( like Bottega Veneta, Loro Piana , etc )

Trends die fast. Legacy remains.

That's exactly what they are synonymous with. They are no Goyard or Loro P. They want to sell these Maybachs in the thousands. Tens of thousands in their dreams. It doesn't seem like they want to be Rolls Royce or Bentley.

White interior only for one year? Don't tell me you HAVE to have that satin interior trim too?

Point proven, they just dont have what it takes to compete with the likes of Bentley and Rolls.

Yep, but I’d argue that they know they’re just too cheap to do it. I think some within are still shell shocked over the 57/62 bespoke Maybach failure.

In real life situation.

Authenticity is the reason the G Wagon is Mercedes' premier luxury product. And it doesn't need the Maybach brand. It outdoes the Cullinan and the Bentayga in terms of luxe desirability quite comfortably.

I think honestly Mercedes should just kill the Maybach brand and just maybe use it for trim level, without the gaudy badging.

People forget that Mercedes themselves were on a level with Rolls and Bentley in the 20th century without needing for an extra badge.

The 3 pointed star is enough. Remind the world of what Mercedes meant. Especially if you can't be bothered to create a bespoke Luxury architecture for Maybach. Heck even if they did make a MLA (Modular Luxury Architecture) I think they'd be better off keeping it being a Mercedes and simply reviving the Grosser name.

I dunno, am I being too controversial?

Perhaps a little Starry eyed.

This is the reason why you end up with Star patter trim, and not the things you value.
Lol, that's not the point though.
Overusing the star iconography isn't good either. They could do with less of that, except in areas where its subtle.

I don't think Maybach has the same brand cache as Rolls and Bentley. That is why I imagine the bespoke Maybach 57/62 didn't light the world on fire back in the day. Mercedes never put enough muscle behind the brand to begin with.

All good points here. I just think Mercedes just needs to build the best cars they can. The rest will sort itself out. Maybach can go or stay doesn’t matter, just build the best products…..like they used to do.

Daaammmnn those are some bad-ass rims! Fantastic.

I dunno, am I being too controversial?

Too naive. They'd have to ditch like 3/4 of their line-up to accomplish that goal. You can't expect the very best craftsmanship and quality in a VW Golf class car. I'd cost 80k for a base model and no-one would buy it.

We could expect S class levels of quality in a C class and RR levels in an S class. They can do it, but the shareholders won't like it much when they become a small luxury brand. The world was in another dimension altogether when MB and RR competed. And if they would have kept competing with RR, Mercedes would have become another VAG sub brand.

Mass production is the sole key to surviving as 'small' independent car makers. Counts equally the same for BMW and Mercedes.

It kinda looks good in that video. If the hood didn't have the logos then it probably would look less of a handbag car.

The logos are optional thank goodness. It's still a big missed opportunity. It should have been a V12, more bespoke interior and far more customization options. The entire Manufaktur catalogue should be on offer for the price they're going to charge for this.

Now that I think about it, would the V12 even fit? Its a big ol' lump.

But I do agree. Should put in the big ol' TTV12.

This car is ridiculously priced at 255k Euros, it is a total waste of money and it only is available in 2 colours (red and white) and 1 interior colour. (white). WTF talk about exclusivity!!! It is 60k more expensive than a standard SL63, which is like a 30% increase just for changing the grill and some unique colours and interior leather and having some Maybach emblems all over your bonnet!!

Iconic design refined with exclusive Maybach style elements and new double hood
In keeping with the brand philosophy, the Mercedes‑Maybach SL offers a holistic, sensual experience. The contour of the brand-specific, chrome-finished radiator grille is illuminated, as is the filigree Maybach lettering. The distinctive bonnet with an upright Mercedes star has a chrome-plated longitudinal fin in the middle. To further increase its exclusivity, the obsidian black bonnet is optionally available with an incorporated Maybach pattern in plain graphite gray . This process is very complex and is partly done by hand. First, the bonnet is given a base coat, which is then sanded by hand. This is followed by printing with the Maybach pattern. Each process step is subject to high technical requirements and requires the utmost precision in execution. Finally, the bonnet is coated with a matt clear varnish, sanded again by hand and finished again with a matt clear varnish.

The Maybach "sub-brand" in its more recent form is really little more than a trim package. And sadly, often gaudy and pretentious. The SL Monogram series is one of the most explicit examples of such. IMHO, simply a silly, embarrassing vehicle. A "non-Maybach" R232, tastefully configured with some chosen Manufaktur offerings is lightyears more tasteful.

Mercedes-Maybach

In November 2014, Daimler announced the revival of the Maybach name as a sub-brand of the Mercedes-Benz S-Class (W222), positioned as an upscale version akin to the more sporty Mercedes-AMG sub-brand.
