SLK/SLC [Official] Mercedes-Benz SLK-Class

The Mercedes-Benz SLK-Class is a compact executive roadster, produced by Mercedes-Benz. It was released in 1996 and was built at the Mercedes plant in Bremen, Germany, until the end of production in 2020. The former name "SLK" was derived from sportlich (sporty), leicht (lightweight), and kurz (short). With the release of the facelift R172 in 2016, the SLK-Class was renamed to SLC-Class in accordance with the revised nomenclature adopted by Mercedes. Under this scheme, roadsters use the base name "SL", followed by the model's placement in Mercedes-Benz hierarchy, the letter "C", being the roadster equivalent to the C-Class.
Well I have to say that after two days I begin to like it. Especially the red one with AMG Paket looks awesome

.... And THIS LOOKS ABSOLUTELY TERRIBLE!!!! What were they thinking??

What's wrong here? the wood?..u know u can opt for black one or alu.:D

Lol. Actually I love wood, much more-so than aluminum. The off-center, unaligned screen just looks pathetically cheap and low-rent IMO. M-B are usually the masters of interior fit & finish, how could they get a screen so unfitted? :D

^man comeon.. i just get tired sometimes reading your posts?

Do you really think its off center??

And its not the picture? or your eyes?

You even own a Mercedes..

give it a break allready

Just 'cause I own one, doesn't mean I'll be a fan boy all the time for them.

You can't see that it's blatantly off center? It looks terrible to me in that respect.

Obviously, they needed the screen to be easily visible so it had to be a certain distance away from the drivers seat, and the head unit needed to be ergonomic enough in being closer to the drivers seat. But they surely could have implemented it better.

Take a look again, you can see the vents and the Nav screen is completely offset to HVAC controls. That's what I noticed when I first saw the interior as well.

IMHO, this is probably the worst design to come out of Benz lately. The profile looks awful, mostly due to the size of the lights, makes the car very unbalanced. The SLK is not that big of a car, but a lot of the detaisl, such as the grills and tail lights are oversized in comparison to the proportions of the car.

My bad now i see it..the console with the buttons is offset from the upper part ( screen and vents) or the other way around as you said.

I thought you said the screen was not in the middle of the vents..

Things is..you answered your own question..this is not about fit or finish..or lazyness..there is probably more thought and reasoning behind that than you could imagine..

And im not a blind fanboy either..if you read my posts on this car..i actually hate it..

But to say that they ****** up the interior as if they can not measure whats dead center and whats not..is just stupid..its not a kit car..:t-crazy2:

Yo this car is growing on me. BIG time. I can see it working for MB. I really think it will look good in the metal, it cerainly looks modern. Cant say I hate it, though if any of you do, thats cool.

Oh... and all this talk about fanboy BS. Please... aren't we all really in some ways? And if we're not, what the **** are we doing here posting everyday?? Give it a rest guys

Dude it's the first MB interior to feature that shift..relax.:t-cheers::D

Guys I think it is the prespective angle for that "missalignment' illusion, the controls below are few cm's closer to the camera, so I think if you look dead straigh it will look centered.

Actually, it's not an illusion. Used the center points of the vents and you will see that the LHS one is lined up to the wood trim (vertically). The RHS is outside completely. And the screen isn't centered. Compare it to these pictures and you can see that it is not an illusion:

Compared to SLS interior, which is centered:

How much this matter to you guys, well that's another story. Just saying some facts, that's all

Isn't it exactly in the middle in that last pic??

Oohw, whoops...that is SLS. Hardy see the difference, damn!! It's indeed not in the middle in SLK.

I have to admit that only now, after these discussions, have I noticed that the whole hang-down console is off-centre relative to the screen and vent positioning. This has given me reason for a re-think about the dashboard:

The cut-and-paste central console is clearly off-centre and that is just a plain lazy, half-arsed effort.

^man comeon dont u think it has to do with ergonomics..reaching the buttons..
or the screen position..or the vents and air distribution rather than just chalking it up to lazyness?

Believe me, I'm a HUGE M-B fan-boy, but I'm one of those fanboys who's also a thorn in their a$$, as I won't let them rest on their laurels. :D

And hopefully the last! :D

Sorry guys, this is just something that's unacceptable from them. M-B is ALL about the details, the fit/finish, etc. That's part of what you pay for. An off centered screen looks tacky, unfinished, cheap, and careless. This is something that is expected for Kia to get right.

As for the R129, indeed that car is a classic, and the W140 has a similar "misalignment" of the center console as well. However, it also looks bad in these cars. These cars are older though, and interior design and measurements have gotten much better in the last decade or so. Also, the R129's off-center is more blatant, showing up as more of a design "theme", while the new SLK's has no "theme" to it. The fact that it's hard to notice at some angles is even worse, as it just looks like they were drunk when aligning it, lol.

The positioning of the COMAND screen they came up with it's not the best, at least stylistically talking, but is hardly a disaster. It is a question of how well you see the display when standing on the driver's seat. Positioning it in the centre wouldn't have been the best alternative, as the vision would have been blocked by the steering wheel. Moreover, it would have meant that air vents were getting smaller in size, because the SLK is a much narrower car than, for instance, the SLS is and does not have the spacial resources the wider dashboard of the Merc supercar has (see it for yourself from the photos). So, a whole rethink of the SLK's dash just to fix the alignment problem is impossible at the moment and if it somehow were to happen, it couldn't be done without altering the current dimensions. A prime solution, some would say, would be moving the center console to the right, but that would completely ruin the space for the passenger seat. So, this is a tricky affair where geometry is fully involved.

If you look closely, you'll see there are some minor differences between the SLK console and the one in the SLS. In the SLK, it becomes a bit wider at the top just to counteract (in a way or another) the mispositioning of the display, whereas in the SLS the two vertical margins are parallel.

^man comeon dont u think it has to do with ergonomics..reaching the buttons..
or the screen position..or the vents and air distribution rather than just chalking it up to lazyness?

And how come ergonomics wasn't an issue in SLS where it is perfectly centered?
