designo Edition and RedArt Edition: Twice the exclusive open-air driving fun

Exactly six weeks before the start of spring in Europe, Mercedes-Benz is launching its automotive springtime with attractive editions of its SL and SLC Roadsters. Customers can choose from the SLC RedArt Edition as well as the SL designo Edition. While the compact SLC special model emphasises sporty dynamics, the SL is tailored towards exclusivity and fine interior design.

The baby SL theme worked for 2 generations, but just as this generation SLC has become the best SLC/SLK in in the history of the line, the market has dried up and the theme has become stale. It's actually a good little roadster, but there are better choices at this price point as far as excitement goes. It is time for Mercedes to totally re-imagine this car like BMW is doing with the Z4. A real sports car is needed to compliment the AMG GT, not the SL. That is the key.

Agreed, the competition is just too stiff for the SLC and its sad MB couldn't quite pull this car off right, and now it will most likely be going for good..

If AMG really wants to gain more buyers and even greater respect in performance circles, a bespoke Boxster competitor is in order, and do it cheaper than Porsche does. Boxster prices are ridiculous if you want anything extra on the car. The BMW/Toyota sports car will be just that, not a poser like the Z4, SLK/SLC and TT.

IMO It needs to become part of the AMG stable, that is an exclusively AMG product like the GT and upcoming coupe, and be positioned and priced directly as a Boxter competitor. A Cayman variant wouldn't go astray either.

That AMG enters the segment below the AMG GT is not unthinkable... but also, given what Audi does with it's TT, would it be a surprise if there was an MFA based car from Benz, in AMG guise, in that same segment?

Just think of it - TT is a MQB based car, and it even has more cylinders than the Boxster/Cayman duo these days have.

But in the end, the segment is almost dead, I don't see them bothering with it at all, at least in the near future.

I would love to see this, I actually hope Wagener does something amazing with the new one. I'm driving an original SLK 32 AMG around at the moment as my city car. I love it. It's so tiny LOL

Really?, lucky guy, I've always wanted to drive the 32 AMG as it sounds awesome on paper with astounding power for its time. It sure has some cult appeal today. How would you rate the driving experience? Does it handle like a proper roadster, or is it run of the mill R170 stuff..

I find it really enjoyable, it's still powerful enough to keep up, the engine and kompressor sound nice and I find the design the best SLK they ever did. It always appealed to me. It cost me 20k which is probably just the first years depreciation on a new SLC 43. And I don't think I would enjoy the SLC more. I'd like to try an old Z3 M to compare, I am sure it's the sportiest.

Yeah... it's okay too All the cars went to Swissvax for a good polish. They do the BEST work.

Thanks for the info mate, I bet it is a blast to drive..and ure right the 32 AMG looks dead nice and its probably my all time favourite SLK too..

The first gen SLK is in my opinion still the best looking model, it was such a stylish compact car with great proportions. The SLK 32 is definitely the best model in that range. Its 260kw supercharged V6 is beast of an engine and delivers great performance and noise.

Some contrasting views of the exact same car..where for example Matt praises the SLK for its ride back in 2012, but in 2017, it is no longer valid..seems like a bit of a trend where reviewers rave about the car first then after a while the initial rave starts diminishing..

It can work as a stand alone AMG product to go against the Boxter/Cayman. You can see how Mercedes is targeting the entire Porsche line up with its AMG division.

Heard from several people about SL. That it was a great car before facelift, but after Mercedes made its suspension stiffer and SL completely lost its character. Maybe here we see the same thing.

Suspension is the biggest problem of almost all Mercedes models nowadays. 222 is less comfortable than 221 (haven't driven LCI 222 yet and had no opportunity to compare it to 7 series), 213 E-class is less comfortable than the new BMW 5 series, and 205 C-class is less comfortable than the old 204 and even f30 3 series BMW!
