SLK/SLC-Class (R172) [Official] Mercedes-Benz SLC (R172)

The Mercedes-Benz R172 is the third generation SLK-Class (SLC-Class) launched in 2011. It is the successor to the R171. Production: 2011–2020.
but this non hand built V6 is not a true AMG and I'll say again this should have been a SLC450 AMG Sport.
The SLC450 AMG badge sounds so much better and it also has some heritage as the 450SLC badge was famous in the 1970's on the R107 SLC. SLC AMG 43 doesn't make sense, not a true AMG and for previous SLK55 AMG owners wanting to trade their cars on the FL will be a downgrade, 3.0ltr V6 against 5.4ltr V8, 270kw against 310kw and then that magical V8 sound and character gone. Its a nice car but still disappointing in my opinion.

IMO having a 2 digit moniker is needed even if they are not true AMG's, in order to differentiate them from standard models, for example, the impact of saying C43 compared with saying C450 AMG Sport is quite obvious, I actually thought the 450 moniker never made sense, even though the new 43 one is even more bonkers....what was wrong with AMG C40, why 43?, I guess we'll never know.

Nah can't get with that. If they aren't real AMGs then they shouldn't have 2 digits IMO. Period. Dilutes the brand terribly. The 2-digit AMG tag meant something truly special and handbuilt (engine) until NOW. AMG Sport was perfect.

It is now clear that the SLC43 should have had the higher output version of the 3.0L V6. A SLC43 with 396hp would have made a much better replacement for the SLK55.

PRODUCTION OF NEW ROADSTER SL AND SLC LAUNCHED

In the Mercedes-Benz plant in Bremen the production of the reworked SL and SLC roadster was launched. Paola Ferrara, head of the roadster assembly, celebrated with her team at the end of the line the Jobs#1 of the new SL (blue) and the new SLC (red). Although both roadsters are based on different vehicle platforms they are still flexibly manufactured on one line.

The production of open vehicles at the Bremen plant started in 1989 with the SL roadster of the R129 series. By 2014, in 25 years of production, 400,000 SLs were produced. The SLC , formerly SLK, is manufactured since 1996 in the Bremen plant and this year celebrates its 20th anniversary.

They really look good in that pic. I think the SL may see a good sales boost this year. Mercedes seems to be late on production nowadays. The SL was supposed to be here in Spring, but if they're just starting production it will be early summer before any cars get here to the U.S. By fall MB dealers are going to be swimming in new product.

Will the S-Class cabrio arrive by end of summer?

Totally agree with Merc1 - why not the 396 hp engine for the SLC? And even for the SL this would have been a nice entry engine

Mercedes SLK celebrates its 20th anniversary

Mercedes is gearing up to launch the new SLC but it's celebrating an important birthday as the model's predecessor, the SLK, is turning 20 years old later this month.

Originally unveiled at the 1996 Turin Motor Show, the SLK was a wedged-shaped convertible which featured an innovative retractable folding metal roof. Given its sporty styling and relatively affordable price tag, the model was an instant success particularly with female buyers who liked the improved safety and additional sound insulation that the car's Vario roof provided. Mercedes also notes the SLK set "new standards in pioneering engineering and technology."

The model was originally launched as an SLK 200 and a supercharged SLK 230 K. A facelifted variant was introduced in 2000 and it saw the introduction of a 218 horsepower six-cylinder engine in the new SLK 320. It was soon followed by a high-performance SLK 32 AMG which produced 354 hp.

The first-generation model was a hit with consumers as the company sold more than 311,000 SLKs between 1996 and 2004. The second- and third-generation SLKs were also relatively popular as sales of these models helped Mercedes to sell more than 670,000 SLKs to date.

The first gen SLK is a timeless design and is a very stylish car indeed. I particularly like the SLK 320 and SLK 32 AMG. The 230K was fast enough but had a terrible sounding 4 cylinder engine. 200 is a model to avoid as its so underpowered, the SLK200K is better. Facelift model is the one to go for as they made the interior look much better as well.

The original cars were, well, not great. I remember how bad the console trim used to peel, and the entire interior door shell falling apart. The tops worked great and reliable, but the power plant was loud, and the trim level was almost embarrassing. Still, they were cute, and the hard top created crazy demand. When I started with MB, we had 8-10 month waiting lists on orders.

MB Passion drives the SLC 250 d. :)

First drive in the updated 172 series
For the first drive of the updated SLC, we have deliberately chosen an exotic one for us, the SLC 250 d! The combination of roadster and four-cylinder diesel is not typical, but that's what creates its charm. Do diesel and open-air fun fit together? Is the performance of the 2.1 liter diesel suitable for sporty driving?

Motorization unchanged: SLC 250 d with 204 hp / 500 Nm torque
With an output of 204 hp and a maximum torque of 500 Nm the SLC 250 d is not badly motorized. Already after a short drive we found that the Roadster through its high torque and - in combination with the new nine-speed converter automatic 9G-TRONIC in comfort mode - lets one move pleasantly and very relaxed. Between a speed of about 1,000 to about 2,500 rpms you feel as a driver really well with the SLC - and here the operating noise of the diesel is quite contained despite the open roof while driving. The focus is clearly on cruising relaxed to enjoy the sun and fresh air. What is happening under the hood goes unnoticed.

However, our test car also has a second side, the one that does not necessarily expect when combining diesel and Roadster: the SLC 250 d can be driven dynamically!

Pass roads not far from Nice
For our second part of the ride along winding mountain passes in the Alps not far from Nice, we sharpen the SLC by DYNAMIC - select button in the center console. Our diesel Roadster as SLC 250 d moves in Sport mode so much tighter than before. The generally 10 millimeters lowered adaptive steel suspension in conjunction with the Dynamic Handling package swallows in this setting significantly less gently small and large potholes on the road. The damping force noticeably reduced, it thus allows the SLC 250 d clearly higher lateral dynamics when cornering at speed.

The steering is more direct and offers a more focused feedback during dynamic driving. Surprisingly fast we find pleasure in the really good driving experience in combination with the diesel generator and let the Roadster quick through the corners of Passtraße up to the Col de Turini run.

Precise and agile driving impression
The SLC 250 d whilst also offering a perfect manageable and precise, agile and direct sporty impression. The Roadster is almost perfectly balanced on the road and makes every curve passage to pure fun. Optimal shows here also the built-up diesel engine, - it depends always good on gas - especially from narrow bends. The nine-speed automatic transmission puts in Sport mode always accurate for the situation fits the right gear, without somehow uncontrollably switch back and forth.

For us no advantage: Sport Plus mode The Sport Plus mode brings for our driving impression no real advantage, quite the opposite: the gear change function here an idea too hard and hectic. The speeds are simply kept too high by very late upshift and very early downshifting, as they would match the four-cylinder diesel of the SLC. The damper of the suspension be in this setting significantly too hard and stubborn, so the fun simply suffers.

Fully electronic Vario roof
Furthermore, the SLC has the SLK facelift its typical all-electric Vario roof made of metal, and its use has now been made even more comfortable. So far, the canopy could be to always opened and closed only in the state, this is the model refinement package now different. If you have to set off traffic conditions when opening or closing the roof, the process begun in the state can now be continued up to a speed of up to 40 km / h. Also new: the small side window behind the door can now be closed separately with the roof open.

In the driving test at spring temperatures 16-18 degrees we could with the roof closed and the side windows, even at a higher speed, 250 felt little wind turbulence in the interior of the SLC d. In conjunction with the optionally available windbreaker in fabric design, we see only a slight and pleasant fresh wind breeze. In addition, the three-stage seat heating and also multistage neck-level heating AIRSCARF ensured an optimum comfort factor while driving. The options one should include in the order in any case.

The updated interior of the SLC includes new decorative elements - as in our test car - the new aluminum trim part with carbon cut in light and the new designed instrument cluster with its two tube-shaped circular instruments including red pointers. Even before the facelift, the interior of the 172 series showed a sporty character and therefore needed no further major changes.

Conclusion
The SLC is a nice compact vehicle and also shows in combination with the powerful diesel engine very athletic and caring for good fun driving performance. The SLC 250 d offers different faces: it can cruise leisurely with relaxed driving from A to B - but it also offers the sporting foundations for a dynamic ride with lots of curves. If the SLC suitable as daily driver? Yes and no. The SLC 250 d is so harmonious that it's quite suitable for commuting, but the trunk is not large, especially when the roof is open and limits its capability a bit. We therefore really see the strength as a second car as beautiful and dynamic weekend tourer or to make short trips with little luggage.

Mercedes dealers here in the U.S. are being flooded now with 2017 S Cabriolets, SLs and SLCs, just in time for August, Sept, Oct, perfect drop top weather across America. C Cabrio comes in late Sept/early Oct.

We got our first SLC43 this week. The front looks terrific. $70k for this car seems high, but when you look at what some stuff is bringing in the market it's crazy.
