SL-Class [Official] Mercedes-Benz SL (R231)

The Mercedes-Benz SL-Class (marketed as Mercedes-AMG SL since 2022) is a grand touring sports car manufactured by Mercedes-Benz since 1954. The designation "SL" derives from the German term "Sport-Leicht", which translates to "Sport Light" in English.
I love the look of the 3/4 front.

The 3/4 rear is... interesting.

I guess the only differentiation from the next-gen AMG GT cabriolet is the 2+2 config (or even just 2+)

I would not be so sure. This cars seems to be like a refreshed current gen GT. So the new GT needs to be sportier too.

Even with the camo this looks like an SL looks. Not the terrible thing MB released 8 years ago.

It's an all new platform thankfully, they no longer need to deal with the SLS platform compromises. But yes you're right the AMG GT will sportier than the SL. This is a nice and proper two pronged approach to hit the 911.

Hmmm...that might not be too far off from the real thing. I just hope Mercedes realizes that after they cut the S Coupe/Cabrio, the SL has to be a winner.

Autobild is very lost with that render that looks more like an amg gt but ugly, and if that render is accurate then it is Mercedes who is lost.

I’ve been looking to fix my big SL itch by getting another SL55 as an relativity inexpensive cruiser, but in the process I’ve been seeing some very attractive deals on pre-FL R231 SL550s. I’d say in terms of being a pure roadster - nothing comes close - extremely comfortable, powerful, smooth, high-quality interior, and cocooned with the top down.... the only trouble is the exterior design. Even though I’m now considering one, it’s a shame MB dropped the ball on the exterior design, otherwise it would be a no-brainer over a R230.

The R230 is a timeless beauty, but the early ABC architecture, vario-roof, and SBC are things to worry about, as they are guaranteed to go wrong. It’s not easy to find a R230 with a comprehensive maintenance history on those three features. Also, the interior, the best looking MB interior of that era, is obv very behind the times in tech.

ABC and the vario-roof are largely trouble-free on the R231.

The R231 is not a ghastly looking car. It looks more decent with good rims and is an increasingly rare car on the roads. A used SL63 is a thinking man's Ferrari california. Or maybe it's the other way around. The California is wealthy man's SL.

A friend of mine owns SL63s 2013, the car is indeed comfortable when you compare it to other roadsters, the air suspension and seats are best in class. The car was almost trouble free, and he did not face any issues with the roof.

In my view, go with a 63s rather than 550, the exterior looks thousand times better with AMG rims and body kit, not to mention the beautiful exhaust.

The FL version looks so much better in real life compared to the pre FL version, the front lights are a huge improvement although the backside/tail lights is still a weakness even with the FL version.

Have you checked MB world marketplace? There's a lovely '06 SL55 for sale in Las Vegas:

Wow, a super rare “F1 Pack” diamond silver over berry red. That is gorgeous; thanks for the link.

What bothers my about the R231 (from debut to now) is the oversized bug-like headlights and how the front and rear look like they were designed by two different design teams (which they were).

I definitely agree that the SL is the thinking man’s California since early examples a full of issues and build quality problems. The roof going wrong on a California is much worse than a SL roof going bad.
