CLS Shooting Break & upcoming 6er GT (also a shooting brake) are answers to A7 & Panamera - which are hatchbacks, while CLS & 6er GC are actually 3-box sedans. So, in sedan&wagon formula form C / 3er and E / 5er, MB & BMW are also going to offer more practical (when it comes to boot) wagonish versions to their coupe-sedans: the coupe-wagons aka shooting brakes.
Audi & Porsche are offering all-in-one models (hatchbacks), while MB & BMW will offer two versions of "4dr coupes" - a sedan, and a wagon. It's a new & very stylish niche - especially in Europe where wagons are extremely popular. And so are expected to be the sporty coupeish wagons aka shooting brakes.
It's a good move, IMO.
Regarding 5er GT - the car sells well to the targeted customers.
It's a bit too expensive, and lack low-end diesel engines (eg. 20d) - but BMW is saving those aces for upcoming 3er GT.
The whole GT family will makes much more sense than the now single & isolated 5er GT. There is a huge GT-family expansion planned. Most series from 1 to 6 will get one - odd series will get GTs as cross-overs, while even series GTs will be shooting brakes.
X1 is a very succesful model in BMW portfolio - it sells extremely well. And it also stands out from the crowd - it's not a classic SUV, but more a crossover Infiniti EX-style or Audi Allroad-style. And therefore fits the BMW brand well. Eg. Q3 & upcoming MLK / BLK from MB are more SUVish (and thus more practical) than X1 is. Although not a typical mainstream small SUV, the X1 is becoming a mainstream - with very strong sales. While with upcoming X4 & especially 3dr X2 the new true niches will be created.
Ideenity crisis @ MB & BMW? Hardly. Guys, be more openminded. You really start to sound like Opas (grandpas) - with stuff from the past in mind (eg, MB & BMW image from 80s and beyond). It's 2011 now, geez. MB & BMW have very effective & clever marketing guys employed. Knowing what they are doing. OK, they also make mistakes now & then. But in general the set course is quite brilliant. Forcing other brands to follow ...
