Official: Mercedes-Benz Shooting Break Concept

I can't wait for the CLS shooting break. It's gonna make the 5-er GT look like an ugly pig. Oh wait, it already does look like one. :D

5er GT is not CLS Shooting Break's rival. The upcoming 6-series GT is. It's gonna be a shooting brake version based on a 6er Gran Coupe.

While eg. Porsche & Audi offer a single 5dr hunchback model in this segment (Panamera & A7 - as a compromise between coupe-sedan & coupe-wagon), MB & BMW will offer two different models: a 4dr coupe-sedan, and a 5dr coupe-wagon (shooting brake).

5er GT is in a completely different league. It's not a low-sitting sports car - rather a cross-overish luxury cruiser.

Thats the little version, not the CLS based one. We already know how the CLS based on will look.

CLS Shooting Break & upcoming 6er GT (also a shooting brake) are answers to A7 & Panamera - which are hatchbacks, while CLS & 6er GC are actually 3-box sedans. So, in sedan&wagon formula form C / 3er and E / 5er, MB & BMW are also going to offer more practical (when it comes to boot) wagonish versions to their coupe-sedans: the coupe-wagons aka shooting brakes.

Audi & Porsche are offering all-in-one models (hatchbacks), while MB & BMW will offer two versions of "4dr coupes" - a sedan, and a wagon. It's a new & very stylish niche - especially in Europe where wagons are extremely popular. And so are expected to be the sporty coupeish wagons aka shooting brakes.

It's a good move, IMO.

Regarding 5er GT - the car sells well to the targeted customers.
It's a bit too expensive, and lack low-end diesel engines (eg. 20d) - but BMW is saving those aces for upcoming 3er GT.
The whole GT family will makes much more sense than the now single & isolated 5er GT. There is a huge GT-family expansion planned. Most series from 1 to 6 will get one - odd series will get GTs as cross-overs, while even series GTs will be shooting brakes.

X1 is a very succesful model in BMW portfolio - it sells extremely well. And it also stands out from the crowd - it's not a classic SUV, but more a crossover Infiniti EX-style or Audi Allroad-style. And therefore fits the BMW brand well. Eg. Q3 & upcoming MLK / BLK from MB are more SUVish (and thus more practical) than X1 is. Although not a typical mainstream small SUV, the X1 is becoming a mainstream - with very strong sales. While with upcoming X4 & especially 3dr X2 the new true niches will be created.

Ideenity crisis @ MB & BMW? Hardly. Guys, be more openminded. You really start to sound like Opas (grandpas) - with stuff from the past in mind (eg, MB & BMW image from 80s and beyond). It's 2011 now, geez. MB & BMW have very effective & clever marketing guys employed. Knowing what they are doing. OK, they also make mistakes now & then. But in general the set course is quite brilliant. Forcing other brands to follow ...

Hopefully M-B don't make the same mistake as BMW did with the 5 GT and save face by not brining it to the U.S Market.... Where it will inevitably fail and be more of a negative impact, image-wise to the brand, than positive. If Americans aren't buying Wagons for their Utility/Practicality, then they won't by ones with less Utility/Practicality because they're more sleek, etc.

I think it's as easy as this: There's one reason to buy a Wagon: Utility. No lipstick will make the pig attractive, as it's still a pig. Americans don't find Wagons attractive enough to justify buying them for their incredible practicality and utility VS SUV's and Sedans, so it goes without saying that the very nature that is unattractive them them/us, won't be overshadowed by some extra flash and dash here and there.

These Marketing/Product guys get paid Millions, but they can't come to this simple conclusion? (looking at you, BMW). I bet the F10 Wagon would have outsold the 5 GT out here, and not been such a scar on the face of BMW's Design capabilities, and would not have given BMW the eye sore that we have now on Dealership lots.
