Yep, color goes from black to blue to grey...
Christian-S is right, sometimes looks so black in bright sun, and sometimes looks so blue and then charcoal... It's hard for me to predict how it will look, almost no rhyme or reason to it...

Perfect colour. In these pics it looks almost like Magnetite black.

I think that Mercedes shoots himself.
For the great similarities between the style of class premium S-Class and C-Class compact instead.

^^ I don't give a .... they look similar. I'd be buying a S-Klasse because of its own merites, being the best possible car for my personal needs. My decision to buy it, won't be influenced in a negative way only because the C-Klasse looks similar. I'd only be smiling to see such a beautiful "little" Benz on the road.
So, no shooting in the foot as far as I'm concerned.

I've criticized Audi designs in the past for being able to mistake an A8 for an A4 in the rear. Looks like MB took it to the next level. :P The C-class and S-class have looked similar before and while this wasn't exactly what I'd prefer MB to do, but I don't think it detracts from the S-class.

Much like what I'd say about Audi, I just wish they exercised their design team a bit more. :)

Some would shout sameness (brand identity) is overrated. But from a business point of view, it probably is the right thing to do.

C class faces fierce competition (BMW, jag, lexus, infiniti...) while it makes a large part of their sales.
their design team have been lazy but potential C class customers would be v. very happy.

There's an old saying...
The needs of the many(sales), outweigh the needs of the few(sales)...

I am sad to see MB do this. I completely disagree that this doesn't take away from the S class. Read back to the earlier posts in this forum on the S class and people exclaim on the cars "presence" and "dominating stance on the road". Now we have a base cheap C class that can be mistaken for an S class. It certainly takes away from the exclusivity of spending $100k+ on a car.

I personally don't care what the outside of any car looks like....since I sit on the inside of a car. But I do think the similarities of one of your least expensive and most expensive cars shouldn't be so easily mistaken for each other.....I thought the car on the left was an S class til I spent a lot more time studying it.

Now that I read about the official reveal of the C class though...I don't see much reason not to buy the C...unless you have 4 big people to haul around all the time. HUD, touchpad, air suspension, maybe I'll buy 2 of them in place of the S class :)

Maybe when we see them in "real life", the C will look so small that it won't steal the S's thunder. These pics can't show us size and presence in person.

Buying 2 C's still won't give you the room, refinement, ride and sheer substance of the S-Class. There is a reason why the larger S rides better and does eveything better than a C. Just looking at them on paper and saying that there is no point in buying an S is doing yourself a disservice.

Don't forget ultra high net worth customers generally like to hide themselves from the crowd. They will like the fact that the new C and S looks similar.

Only people who drive the s class for face would wonder why they spent this premium. Few of them would look at other options but other brands IMHO doesn't have anything to compete with the new S well.

Very good points. Didn't think of that.

In some countries and cities, the S-class is far more common than the C-class, so you wont' have such issue.

You will probably not buy 2 C's with equal equipment as an S for the price of 1 S class. I tried the MB configurator and found out that when you put similar equipment, price is becoming very high for the C, IMO. And you only have a four cylinder... I find the price setting of the C high compared to e.g. the E class. Price differences between mercedes models become small when you add all options... An S has a high basic price because there is already a lot standard equipment. Price differences between e.g. a standard S and a CLS with similar equipment is very low...

Daimler boosts production. :)

To boost production of the top-of-the-line S-class sedan, employees at the assembly plant in Sindelfingen, Germany, agreed to prolong shifts by an additional 74 minutes a day in 2014 after adding 30 minutes this year, Daimler said today in a statement. The plant also has worked four Saturday shifts. A factory in Bremen has arranged 10 extra shifts for November and this month to build more GLK SUVs and C-class cars, the best-selling Mercedes sedan, the company said.

That is interesting about the C-Class. Sales are dropping here, but they must be up elsewhere in the world. Wait until the GLA goes into production. Mercedes will really need more shifts onces the public realizes you can get a Mercedes crossover in the U.S. for under 40K.

C-class sales aren't dropping. They sold 7,878 of them last month, which is right on the money. It's actually more than they sold in some other months of 2013.
